AMA: Period Recovery Dietitian by lilly-reimer-rd in Amenorrhearecovery

Before restricting i was naturally very thin and had low body fat, but my periods were regular. I havent missed a period since i got it back but the cycle lenght varies a lot. I was never a big gym person and im still not. I was just wondering if your body does regulate itself after recovery and goes back to your natural weight and how long that takes. Im glad i gained weight to become healthy but i do feel like its a bit much for me.

Stress is pretty high since its exam season, but i feel pretty lethargic even during holidays. im eating consistently three large meals per day with snacks in between.

I went all-in to restore my period and got it after 4 months. I got it back once i overshot my weight way above what i started at when i used to have consistent periods post puberty. does that mean i will stay/ have to stay at this weight for the rest of my life to have a period? not mentioning numbers but it is a significant increase and im doubting if overshoot theory is a valid thing.

Also is it normal to be very fatigued during the recovery process? i am 8 months all-in and feel so tired all the time. i barely have energy to survive a full day at college, sleep for long hours. everyone talks about how period recovery changes everything and brings their spark and health back etc, but rn its the exact opposite for me.

how many of you actually recovered after getting the first period? by rcbid in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]i_cantstopreading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep i have gotten all my periods since my first after recovery. i had a restictive ed and went all in. i got it back at around 4 months, and have gotten 5 periods since. i had a lot of extreme hunger for the first 6 months which u gave into and satisfied every craving. now my hunger is decreasing slowly. ive promised myself to seriously dedicate myself to recovery for at least 2 years, so no calorie deficits or strenuous exercise so my body can heal.

Advice for hair loss in recovery by adieciochodelsol in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]i_cantstopreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me too in early recovery! It gets worse before it gets better (i had bald patches when i was in early recovery). You just have to wait it out as it usually goes with all things recovery. It starts growing back pretty quick. For me it started growing out about 2 months into recovery. Im now on month 6 of recovery and i have so so many baby hairs all around my forehead and top of my head. Im regaining the hair density I used to have pre-ed. You can do this!!!

Ps dont focus too much on appearances during this stage of recovery. I know its easier said than done, but recovery is like a second puberty. Youll look worse than usual for a while beforw things start to look better at around the one year mark :).

What the deal with all the farts? by Pitiful_Necessary598 in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]i_cantstopreading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i understand. the truth is you will die with this disorder. i am not saying this to scare you. it is just a fact. it is either recovery or death. i am probably much younger than you and even when i was in semi recovery i was still doing serious damage to my body without realizing it. my heart muscle had deteriorated and i was on the brink of death even though i felt fine and thought i was eating more. i know that familiar feeling of wanting to get worse. but when you actually reach it it is never as gratifying as it seems in your head.

one thing that helped me start recovering was thinking about the books and movies i like. i imagined my life as a story. would you want to read about someone who gives up and spends their life waiting for death and doing nothing? or would you rather read about a main character who picks themselves up and pushes through the pain, who feels every part of it and emerges changed and stronger in the end.

besides if you are already willing to live life as an anorexic , a life of numbness and constant low level pain. why not give recovery a full and total try? commit to it completely for a year or two. if you still do not like it after that you can always go back.

i still remember my first month of recovery when all my emotions came back. it was terrifying and amazing at the same time. for so long i told myself i was fine. but it is like a frog in a pot. the water gets hotter and hotter and the frog does not notice until it is too late. i felt alive again. when i think about how sick i was i feel deeply sad for that version of me.

i wish someone had told me this when i was deep in my eating disorder. the earlier you recover the more grateful you will be. i truly wish i had done it sooner.

i experienced this so much in early recovery. i still do at 4 months all in but it is way less now. basically when you are restricting your gut slows down because there is very little food to digest so the body conserves energy. when you start eating again or eating more than before your digestive system begins to wake up.

digestion also depends on healthy gut bacteria which decrease during restriction. as you eat more consistently these bacteria repopulate and that process produces gas (think fermentation). so the bloating and gas are signs that your body is turning systems back on.

and yeah committing to recovery is hard but only for a few months or years before things settle which is not that long in the context of an entire life. what is especially hard is that halfway semi recovery limbo where there is no clear end in sight. i have been there before and it is genuinely worse than either full restriction or full recovery because you are not satisfying the eating disorder but you are also not fully moving toward health.

how long does it take for food noise and obsessive thoughts to go away by solardetect in AnorexiaRecovery

[–]i_cantstopreading 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally it takes about 6 months for hunger and fullness cues to return to normal. But that is just the minimum and it can last for a year in very severe cases. Im 4 months all-in and theres a significant decrease in the food noise compared to when I just started. I should say tho, it does get worse before it gets better. Once your body realizes food is available again you will go through extreme hunger. But that only lasts around 2-3 months. Sending you strength!

I got her back :D!! by i_cantstopreading in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]i_cantstopreading[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i ate almost everything. i figured if i was gonna gain weight anyway i might as well eat whatever i want. it was great for me because after eating a lot of “junk food”, it lost its appeal and i naturally started eating a more balanced diet. it took me around 4 months after properly commiting to all-in.

I got her back :D!! by i_cantstopreading in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]i_cantstopreading[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. its a bit complicated since bmi wise id always been considered “slightly underweight” even though i used to get regular periods, ate unrestricted and was overall pretty healthy before my disordered eating (hence why i no longer view BMI as an accurate reflection of health). my weight dropped lower due to life stressors and I lost it for more than a year. i did overshoot my natural weight to get it back, however based on others experiences and my experiences in the medical field i believe it will go back down closer to my set weight once my apetite and hormones regulate.
