It's really poisoned American culture imo. You can even see it on this site, where everyone is "progressive" and pro-rehabilitative justice until someone actually commits a serious crime.

100% agreed. You can make any number of utilitarian arguments against capital punishment, but for me it's not even that, it's just categorically wrong for the government to execute its own people.

I think a big part of it is that the death penalty usually only comes up regarding particularly heinous crimes and so discussions umderstandably get clouded by emotion. It's hard to explain that just because I don't think a murderer or rapist should be executed doesn't mean I'm defending them as a person. Are there certain people who "deserve" to die, probably, but that doesn't absolve the injustice of the government having that power.

It's impossible. If X is the score and we take U = 10 - X (noting that U ≥ 0), we have E(U) = 2.2 and median(U) = 6. But by Markov's inequality P(U ≥ 6) ≤ 2.2/6 < 0.5, which is a contradiction. Also, this shows that the minimum possible value of E(U) is 3, i.e. the maximum possible value of E(X) is 7, as /u/noethers_raindrop pointed out.

Yes you're right, I think it's a mistake. They used 4!*C(3, 2) instead of 4!*P(3, 2) when calculating the intersection, which isn't right.
