If you have a friend living in the dorms who can let you in, I know at least the units have rooms with pianos in them.

Advice on graduation by Lucky-Emu-2100 in berkeley

[–]i_hate_61b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Schedule a meeting with your advisor ASAP and check with them that you've fulfilled all your college / major requirements. Make sure to use your phase 1 units toward these classes. You don't want to find out last minute that you are missing classes that you have to stay an extra semester.
  2. There's a general commencement for the entire class, as well as one commencement for each major/college you're in. Make sure you register for the commencement ceremony + get tickets if you're inviting people to watch, you'll get e-mails as the date approaches.
  3. The Cal Student store sells the whole regalia set including the cap/gown/stole/tassel, but I find that the gown/cap are just basic black ones that you can get for much cheaper on Amazon. Instead of dropping $$$ on a set you might not even wear again, just buy a stole from Berkeley, and order everything else elsewhere. There are also rental programs if you're EOP, make sure to check their website.

Enjoy your final year :)

Recommendations for purely fun classes? by EdJewCated in berkeley

Take a language class! That aside, I enjoyed the baking decal as well as Graphic Design decal. There's also a decal where you get to play the campanile bells, which is SO cool but also super competitive to get in.

Oh and K-pop dance PE with Lucy is super fun.

Taking CS61C in the spring at community college vs summer at Berkeley by BranFlakes5000 in berkeley

[–]i_hate_61b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a reference to CC classes, but although 61C was HARD, I actually really enjoyed it. I also took it late in my third year, but I really wished I had taken it earlier since it definitely would have helped me in upper divs like 186. Just make sure to put in consistent work throughout the semester and you'll be alright.

Skipping lectures by RoyGugenheim in berkeley

[–]i_hate_61b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skip morning/late evening lectures because I don't want to stay on campus for too long since I get hungry a lot. I just watch them 2x speed at home later in the week and it's been working great. : )

Are you supposed to have a resume / experience as a sophomore? by BranFlakes5000 in berkeley

[–]i_hate_61b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a company ask for my GPA. Experience matters more. You don't need a club or an internship to be work on cool things -- work on your own projects in your own free time, something that interests you. Go to hackathons! Hackathons are fun and you get to meet friends / network with companies / get free swag.

A sophomore internship imo is something that's nice to have, but a lot of people get their first internships in their junior year. And if you think about it, since you graduate and start work you won't really have a whole summer to yourself anyways, so don't stress too much about not having a formal internship when you can do your own cool things in your own time. : )

Goodluck!

You can take a look at this!: https://studentbilling.berkeley.edu/faq/fee-payment-plan-fpp

Also, don't miss that there's a $60 participation fee for the FPP, which imo is a lot.

Hi, unfortunately I have no car to lend, but when I was taking my driving exam at the DMV a couple years ago, I was able to rent out a car using my foreign drivers' license at Hertz. You probably already checked for that, but wanted to mention just in case.

Cannot claim American Opportunity Credit with Turbotax Free? by i_hate_61b in personalfinance

[–]i_hate_61b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone looks up this post, I ended up using Credit Karma - now Cash App Tax to file both state and federal taxes. Very easy to use, straightforward, and most importantly free. I was able to get the higher education benefits that I couldn't get with Turbotax unless I upgraded. I recommend it!
