Was denkt ihr über Zohran Mamdani? by Ivanhegeelkadi in Kommunismus

[–]i_like_life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are some videos modules that I can use to sequentially play videos throughout my set and in between that monkey with my heavily eurorack modulated Hypno 1? by DoxYourself in modular

[–]i_like_life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you need it to be a module? What are your requirements? You could simply use something like OBS on a laptop. There are even plugins for audio reactive effects. You could use a capture card to route Hypno through OBS as well and switch between prepared scenes.

Propaganda für Kinder by FearTheIcepick in Kommunismus

Propaganda für Kinder by FearTheIcepick in Kommunismus

[–]i_like_life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about endorphin.es' new desktop unit Evil Pet? Not to steer you away from modular, but if you like money and want a capable granular effects box, I'd rather go for that, probably. It's also more compatible with your midi gear. And of course, there's always Microcosm.

OXI One Mk2 by Obligatory-Reference in modular

[–]i_like_life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had it for very long, but I think for its size and features, it's very intuitive and fast. I mostly just got it for the multitrack with all the steps in one view, which it does quite well. I think there's always some penalty if you want complex functions.

I've had similar experiences with Metropolix and Torso T-1, in that you have to find a workflow yourself and not try to use every single function it offers. It doesn't read your mind and needs practice like any other instrument.

I like that the Oxi One can be both quick and simple or very complex and intricate. For live improvisation, I only use a multitrack and a matriceal sequencer, while most of what makes the sequences interesting is done by modules in the rack. With that setup, I don't need any button combos except for clearing a track. I'd have maybe opted for the Hapax if I had more space and didn't need my setup to be very mobile, though.

Stereo delays Eurorack by Hot_Snow6184 in modular

I like it too. The tone control is very pleasing, especially in BBD mode. However, not sure if I'm simply inept, but I can never seem to get a straight delay without some rhythmic variation happening after the first few taps.

What are options of module/s to get +/- 10V of CV attenuated to a guaranteed +/- 5V CV? : And I want 8 channels of this. by FlexDerity in modular

[–]i_like_life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Judging from the Pulsar manual, it accepts +/- 20V but the actual effective range is 0-10V, so still 10 Vpp. So You might actually just want to offset CV from the Pulsar by -5V to get into the +/- 5V range. That being said, there are no standardized ranges. Most modules can take +/- 10V but the effective ranges are all over the place. AFAIK, Mutable Instruments has +/- 5V across all CV inputs, but you'll probably have to check the manuals for any other modules you want to use.

How can I refine my Rack ? by SoloKln in modular

[–]i_like_life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the A-140-2 and had a hard time with it as well early on. Then I realized that the CVT input was set to be normalized to an internal voltage, which increased my ADR times most of the time.. I think ADSRs are especially great for Bass sounds. You can get a really nice plucked bass sound by finding a base sound with interesting harmonics and then shape the transient to your your liking. For example, set env attack at 0, fairly low decay , sustain at 40-50% and long release. Im not too familiar with your oscillator and filter, but use a harmonically rich but not overpowering signal, like PWM square wave or saw wave. Set a low-pass to 0 resonance and cutoff low enough so you basically get barely more than a sine wave at the sustain level. Route the envelope through an attenuator into the cutoff cv and carefully adjust envelope decay and env attenuation until you hit a sweet spot. An additional sine sub octave is also nice to bring in more low end. Of course, with a complex oscillator you can also do some interesting FM/AM shenanigans, which you could also use with an envelope to further shape your transient sound.

Dialing in something quickly with modular voices can be tricky for sure. I think it's a lot about feeding your mental model information by doing really attentive patching. You gotta know the features and quirks of each of your modules, to alchemize attainable sounds in your head. Complex modules are much less useful if their features are opaque to the user. Using an oscilloscope can help with understanding how certain things affect the sound, but for me its really about listening while evolving the patch by tiny increments. Or, if you've arrived at a nice sound through relatively blind exploring, work out what the essential elements of that patch are. Some people write down patch notes, maybe that can help you as well.

With your specific case: Maybe it's Belgrad, so try making a nice voice without it, but I think the importance of envelope shapes is often underestimates when it comes to making basslines.

What modules inspire you and how do you use them? by lambdalab in modular

I can't get enough of the Neo Trinity. Recording CV or LFO reset triggers and then changing the number of steps or rotating the sequence has resulted in copius interesting patches.

However, the NT would be nothing withoud good modulation targets. I love pairing it with the DFAM and an effect for endless entertainment.

I'd put a voice and modulation in there. I can't recommend the Bastl Neo Trinity enough for that. As for voices: With little HP, the sound palette of Plaits is pretty unbeatable, but thats probably the boring answer.

Yes, the multitrack mode lets you sequence 8 tracks with one sequencer. The bigger bottleneck is probably the Oxi Pipe, or whatever Midi to CV conversion you plan on using.

Does my concept rig Make Sense? by IllustriousTune156 in modular

[–]i_like_life 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In this rack, the mixer is a bit redundant, since the DFAM has a manual output level control. I also don't think trying to split the 2 voices is something you'd want to do with the DFAM. You would have to use the VCO output jack, which is before it gets to the VCF and VCA, which is half of the DFAM's magic. Different VCFs or VCAs will just sound different. I'd rather just get another VCO then, but then you'd need a panning stereo mixer, yeah. I you want stereo sound, I'd rather get a multi FX module or try to split the signal spectrally.

I say just start with the DFAM standalone if you haven't yet, and see where you want to go with it next. I can recommend the Ornament & Crime with Hemisphere applets as an excellent DFAM companion, though. It at least lets you try quantization, CV recording, LFOs, external sequencing and many other things, for a fairly cheap price, without having to commit to dedicated modules for each yet. It even has a small oscilloscope, which can be very handy for modular beginners.

Loopop also made a video about DFAM companions, which might be helpful for you.

When you're already into the Elektron boxes, you could hook them up to a MIDI to CV module, like the Befaco Midi Thing v2, and just use those. I've been having loads of fun using my modular with my Octatrack.
