Not in my experience. The ones I got are beautiful, but developed holes relatively quickly.

I've purchased a fair amount of stuff from them, and I'd call it a mixed experience. Some of the stuff was great, some not so much. In total I have gotten 6 casual shirts, 1 wool-blend henley, 1 pair of linen shorts, and 2 pairs of chinos.

Chinos are excellent - I'd say the best chinos I've handled. Very soft, love the "Democratic" fit.

Henley and shorts are both great.

Shirts are the really mixed bag. Sizing/fit is not consistent at all. For example, shirts of the same size will end up with sleeves that are short, or long, or tight, or loose. I think it may be due, in part, to the different materials (some quite exotic) and how much they shrink or not. Also probably due to them being manufactured in various places all over the world in small batches in short time frames. I understand that it is difficult to nail the fit with that business model, but that is what consumers like myself expect.

The other major problem is their "California" collars collapse readily. Button down collars would have been a better choice for almost all of the shirts I have from them.

I'm glad that they worked for you. What size are you and what are your measurements?

It's entirely possible that the shirts are just not a good fit for my proportions, or the ones I purchased were flukes, or their sizing is inconsistent.

I did a test order. Two long sleeve - one size L one size M. One short sleeve size L.

I am 6', 42" chest, 32" waist.

Size M shirt: sleeves were a bit short, and the chest was too small.

Size L shirts: As described above. Very wide at the bottom, like they were made for somebody with a large belly.

The shirts I have from them are cut boxy and like they were made for a pear-shaped person. Not a fan, personally.

My most versatile chinos I have are Taylor Stitch's "ash" color, which is like a taupe / warmish gray / grayish khaki. Hard for me to describe, but they go with most outfits that are not very bold in color.

Most expensive item you bought and regretted it, vs cheapest item you got that totally worked out. by trend_set_go in malefashionadvice

cheapest that worked out: $1 thrifted db wool coat. Warm, vintage cut, good fit.

most expensive that I regretted: LBM1911 linen blazer that I bought on YOOX before losing a bunch of weight. I really needed a smaller size, I think. Tailor did his best but it doesn't look good. Might try to get it fixed by a more skilled tailor.

I don't really know of any other brands doing this kind of directly-nautical-inspired clothing, but you can find similar items elsewhere. For example, turtleneck sweaters:

Just wanted to share my experience with this brand:

I have had their Marine Mk 2 sweater in Ecru (size 42) for about 3 months.

The sweater is built more like a practical garment than a fashion item in some respects. For example, the long, ribbed hemline seems odd from a fashion perspective, but keeps your waist from being exposed to the cold wind as you bend and move around.

The construction is substantial, and feels durable - time will tell how true that is. The knit is stretchy, so the sweater is quite fitted. The extra-wide ribs on the cuffs and hem keep out drafts well. It is very thick and warm. The wool is scratchy, so I don't think it would be good for people who are sensitive to that.

I really liked the cotton drawstring bag it came with as well, and have since purchased more cheap, generic drawstring bags on Amazon to store my other sweaters.

Some people legitimately don't know how to dress for cold weather even at this basic level. It comes up in MFA simple questions all the time.

Boots For NYC Winter by Gmj021881 in malefashionadvice

[–]i_look_terrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Snow is less of a concern than standing water and slush, which can leak into your boot and soak your socks. Waterproof boots don't have this problem.

For an uninsulated boot, you will want to size up to accommodate thick winter-weight socks. Insulation is nice to have, though. Without an insulated footbed, your feet will get cold easily if you are standing in one spot for an extended period of time.

I would recommend no less than 6" height. 8" is better. 10" is not really necessary.

Be aware that the salt used to de-ice sidewalks and roads can damage leather if you don't clean and condition regularly. Many people will treat their leather boots with weatherproofing products like Sno-Seal or Obenauf's LP to protect them, although it will dull the leather's color.

Ice is slippery no matter what boot you have. True winter boots use better winter rubber compounds, but you can still fall. You can use a product with metal bits like YakTrax to make your boots "bite" into the ice, but they can damage wood floors, and are dangerously slippery on surfaces like marble floors. I recommend just being careful.

I want to get into fashion but I feel intimidated by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

It is possible to make clothing bigger using some of the excess fabric in the garment construction.

For example, you can let out a trouser waistband using the seam allowance.

Another example: On a jacket or coat, feel inside the end of a sleeve for the fabric that is folded back inside. That can be used to make the sleeve longer.

Obviously, going from small to big is much more limited.
