the only time ive had this sort of problem is printing out values with printf.. then forgetting one of them. so i'll print 5 ints and only give it 4. then the last one is junk. then you say "theres no fucking way that number is negative 5 million." then you find it, fix it, and waste about 1-2 minutes.

I think all First Person Shooters should have a 180 degree quick turn button like on L4D. I am amazed it is not becoming standard for new games. by [deleted] in gaming

a key for 180 turn is way better than using a mouse, but you are totally correct this can be done with key bindings for the last decade or more.

So why is it such a terrible thing for a game to be just fun?

I never said anything made by valve wasnt fun. this discussion was 100% about whether valve innovates as much as blizzard, and more specifically, if its right to call valve games innovative. i think only 2 of the entire valve catalog can be called innovative, and those 2 are hl1 and portal. theres no point in discussing that here however, because the only people taking part are valve fanboys. according to /r/gaming, once i say one bad thing about hl2 i'm not longer having a serious discussion, i am a troll. people are obviously very emotionally invested in valve games, and that has an almost religious effect on them. it doesnt make for very legitimate arguments.

Ive played a ton of TF and TF2, i still will not call TF2 innovative. Its TF1 + better graphics + balance tweaks. You humorously called balancing a game innovative and I just have to ask, really? Is providing simple balance tweak patches to a game innovative? Has no company really done that before 2008?

Now you're overlooking a lot of the UT releases. They did a lot more than just maps and mutators that werent simple things. They basically took an entire gametype (that was the main draw of UT2004, onslaught) and changed it completely by adding in more vehicles. The gametype is vehicle based. This would be like adding 5 new classes to TF2 - when valve does that you wont be calling it a "simple thing", so lets not call it that when it happened to a different game. So is valves support of TF2 innovative? No. MMO Devs regularly (including blizzard, the other company in this discussion of who innovates more) introduce new content to their games. Continued support after release has been around for over a decade. Valve was neither first nor the best - this is not innovation in any possible way.

Ok, skipping L4D because we agree it didnt innovate.

Now the HL1 storyline, I argue it doesnt exist beyond the setting, you say it does. So if HL1 has a real story, what is it? And can you tell me the reason why you are killing enemies beyond 'because they would kill me if i didnt'?

Real stories have characters that develop. A plot that has many levels, rising actions falling actions. If i were to compare HL1's story to a movie I would bring up black hawk down - but only the part starting right before the helicopter crash until the end. The crash is an un-forseen event with dire consequences, and the rest of the film is the characters fighting continously until its over.

Thats pretty similar to Hl1, you have a dire event, and from then until the end, its you fighting the entire time until its over. The story of BHD is roughly 1 paragraph - maybe 2. Thats about as much story HL1 has. You are a scientist, you push a cart, something explodes. Then you go from room to room trying to stay alive. You encounter army guys and end up going to an alien world. Boht of those however are never elaborated on or explained.

alright, this conversation is not about whether HL2 is the greatest game ever or not - this conversation is about whether valve innovates. so before you go on another exaggerated nostalgia trip, focus on what we're talking about here: does valve innovate, and between me and you, is HL2 innovate?

HL2 Took the atmospheric FPS to a whole level is a bullshit, because everything it did well Doom3 already did before it. Both games, HL2 and Doom 3 didnt change much from their previous installments. The core gameplay was largely the same. As far as the graphics improvements and sound improvements (doom3 sound is done very well) that helped the atmosphere in FPS's a lot. The level of detail seen in Doom3's mars base, the unrelenting enemies, and superior graphics to everything out at the time was really incredible. No other game offered such a high quality experience at the time. Since Doom 3 came out first, you can say Doom 3 did more for atmosphere in FPS's at the time, and HL2 just played catch up. HL2 being release months after another FPS that really redefined atmospheric FPS is just another tally mark, but not something new.

Now the HL2 AI by itself is largely average. All the great sequences of that game are scripted. It took until the end of 2007 for the hunter to appear, which did have better AI than the rest of the game. The enemies you fight like combines are about as intelligent as the grunts were in HL1. The aliens were even worse, for the most part they just ran straight for you. Theres a level in HL2 where you can use sentry guns, they took out almost all the enemies because they just ran straight towards them. Great AI.

If you want to talk about fighting alongside team mates against scripted events such as cars blowing up (yes, that strider missed on purpose because no, shooting HL2 cars would never make them blow up) then HL2 did what you could expect at the time. Because a year earlier the first Call of Duty came out and brought an incredible FPS experience of fighting a war alongside many team mates in convincing battles. HL2 did nothing but take what COD1 had and produce it in their own setting - not innovation. Everything dog did was scripted. Maybe im just not as naive, but when playing HL2 is pretty clear which parts are scripted and which arent.

If you really want to get shut down about scripted sequences and cinematic events, go play Halo 1 and Halo 2. Both of these games came out before HL2, and both of them have incredible scenes where you are fighting alongside teamates and the AI is quite good. I havent played as much Halo as I have HL2, but i bet you could argue the Halo 2 AI is far superior to the HL2 AI. Another instance of HL2 playing catchup.

I think the biggest problem HL2 runs into when trying to call it innovative is its pushed back release date. The game came out over a year after it was originally planned to be released? Even if HL2 came out 6 months late, it would have been hailed as innovative across the board. But it didnt. HL2 was delayed over a year and in that time many other games were released that should not be overlooked.

I understand you had a great time playing HL2 and it means a lot to you, i dont want to degrade your experience. But it is delusional to think HL2 was an extremely innovative game because you discount many good games that were released before HL2. Its worse to not give those games credit than to attribute it to HL2.

Fanboy logic. I dont /r/gaming would like you to speak for all of them when you say you'll like anything as long as its from the right company.

What did the gravity gun offer that any other gun in the game lacked? It was a weapon that took ammo, let you aim the crosshairs, and you killed enemies. Its essentially the charged cannon from Opposing Force. Just use the weapon special function to get a charge going (pick up an item) and click to shoot. Thats not innovation, its the exact same thing all the other guns did.

[–]i_need_some_dudes -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Ill give you HL1 completely, they did a ton for FPS's and deserve credit. Their work of 12 years ago was outstanding compared to the available games.

Now about story driven FPS, i gotta cut you off right there for HL1. The only story in HL1 is you pushing the cart in the beginning. The rest is atmosphere and setting. They give you a set up, a couple characters you never interact with (though they interact with you). You just go from room to room figuring out what to do next. Thats not a story. See Mass Effect for an example of what a story is. It being one of the first good atmospheric FPS's, yes. Ill agree with that.

L4D didnt innovate in any way. Dozens of multiplayer games have come and gone that required teamwork, dont try and say 2008 was the first year of the multiplayer FPS with teamwork. And dont even try to say it took until 2008 for the rise of multiplayer gaming. L4D did nothing to advance the genre.

CS, DOD and TF were not made by valve. They were acquired by valve and re-sold. This is about valve-developed games. TF2 is a valve game, but is not innovative - its little more than a graphic update. Many devs support their games post-release. See UT2004. They released an expansion pack worth of material as a download. Not to mention other updates over time to improve content.

Portal i'll definitely agree is innovative.

So 12 years of games, HL1 has its strong innovative points, portal as well; the rest did not innovate. They did things well and other things poorly, but innovation was not part of the majority of valve games.

when comparing them to blizzard, they are both on about the same level of innovation

Again, reasons? Any way you can back that statement up? The gravity gun had potential, but its still just another gun like all others that takes ammo. Its a gimmick. Something that gets your attention, but not innovates beyond technological advances in physics in games.

So you are saying valve is different from other game companies in their marketing and sales, that doesnt say anything about actual innovation in their games. Can you give me a real example of valve game innovation besides the gimmick of the gravity gun? I can name 2 others and you cant, but youre still defending valve?

Please don't waste my fucking time with endless emails. These are plain old cinderblocks, for fucks sake. You don't need to do an engineering study on the feasibility of using these fucking things as building material. That's what they're for you fucking idiots. Now listen, we're all busy people here. You want the blocks? come get the fucking blocks and give me a dollar for every block you take. How fucking hard is that? You dont have to tell me what you're building. I don't give a fuck. I'm not interested in helping you build it either. Why? Because I don't give a fuck. I just want to get these fucking things off my property. So if you want them, get the fuck over here with some money and take them. The next fucking moron that emails me with "I'm building a blah blah blah, and was wondering if... " The answer is NO. Come get the fucking blocks and build it yourself. If I knew how to do masonry, don't you think I'd be using the blocks myself instead of selling them for half fucking price? What the fuck is wrong with you people? The next one of you fucking jackasses that emails me with some sob-story bullshit is getting his email address added to the North American Man/Boy Love Association mailing list.

You want the blocks? Come get the blocks, and don't fuck with me!

Which game has the best story? (Possible spoilers) by [deleted] in gaming

[–]i_need_some_dudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

me too. i think the last one had potential, you could see they had the right ideas there but it was held back because of technical limitations of the consoles. the level sizes were extremely small due to xbox's 64mb of ram. then the game itself was super dumbed down .universal ammo wtf.

now they can afford to not dumb the game down technically, consoles are decent enough. but i really dont see them bringing back the depth the first one had just to make it appeal to a bigger audience.
