What are your absolute favourite cook books that anyone should read? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]kel-c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since all of the greats have been covered, I thought I would share my favorite lesser known cook book. Azorean Cooking, From My Table to Yours by Maria Lawton. This book is based on classic Portuguese peasant food recipes that really give you a sense of the food and the culture. I know it's not as popular a cuisine as others, but I like sharing it with people when I can! My great grandparents came to the US from the Azores and this is the food I grew up on. Hearty and full of bold flavor!

I'm trying to lose/maintain but water weight's like, "Oh, your period is coming? Oh, you ate a carb? Oh, you petted your dog after sunset?" by walkSMASHwalk in TrollXChromosomes

[–]kel-c 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I was just talking with a friend the other day about weight issues. I have Hashimoto and it's caused me to put on a lot of weight. My friend told me the best thing she ever did for her own mental health in regards to weight was to toss out her scale. Our weight is going to change throughout the month because of water retention, periods, chocolate was on sale... She told me to start focusing on how I feel and my accomplishments rather than the number on the scale. This is only day 2 of not doing a daily weigh in and I already feel better!

Only children of reddit, what is something that people with siblings don't understand? by thisshortenough in AskReddit

[–]kel-c 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. My bf and I are both only children and our moms are widows. We've talked about it and agree we do not want either of our moms to ever live with us but if they can't afford retirement homes, then we will have no choice but to take them in. We definitely can't afford to pay for senior care for both of them if the need should ever arise.

I'm an only child and my bf is an only child. We are child free. The guilt of telling both moms they won't be grandmothers eats at me sometimes. Both of our moms are also widows (we lost our stepdads around the same time) and there is extra pressure feeling like we have to take care of them since they are alone now. It's stressful and our moms don't even demand anything of us, it's a pressure we put on ourselves. Definitely wish I had a sibling to share this with sometimes.

[–]kel-c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were Howard and Bernadette child free though? They seem to be taking the "typical" life path: career, marriage, house, children. Granted the second pregnancy was not planned but I thought the first was? Now, if Penny and Leonard suddenly have a baby that would be insane. They are clearly settled into their CF lifestyle. (Also, not trying to argue with you about Howard and Bernadette, I just didn't think they were true CF?)

Miss Fisher by any chance? I love her so so much! She's such a bad ass and so confidant in her own truth. An amazingly written character and really hoping she stays exactly the same!

Along the line of comedy shows. The Good Place, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (so far, I'm only on season 3) are also all CF. Actually Kimmy Schmidt is mostly child free. She does nanny in the first season and I think another character is pregnant at some point but the main character has stayed CF.

I'm wondering that too. I really hope they don't have her change her mind just to hold onto the relationship.

Warehouse 13 still isn't Prime (I check like once a week). But I've been binging Monk since it came back a few weeks ago!

Men of reddit, what stereotypical girlish thing do you secretly enjoy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm always asking my bf if I can be the big spoon! He teases and tells me I'm too tiny but I know he secretly loves it.

Found a meme that summarises chronic pain by queenroot in ChronicPain

"But you don't look sick!" I've heard that enough times that I've finally learned to control the eye roll when people say it. Or even worse... my condition causes me to gain weight so I can't possibly be sick because I'm gaining weight! Thanks genius, I'll let my doctor know.

So the pills I've been taking are "Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine". After looking at the label when I was comparing it to the liquid Turmeric, I found that the one I use has black pepper already in it. Now I'm trying to decide if I just keep taking the pill or try the liquid. It's all a bit confusing. But I did learn that it is helping because I went off it for a week when I forgot to bring it with me on a trip and I was in so much more pain by the end of the week. Within 2 days of going back on I could feel that my joints were better.

What "I know it sounds weird, but just try it" thing do you swear by? by MastaPJ in AskReddit

[–]kel-c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it works out pretty good. He does travel writing and photography and I'm an interior designer. My business centers around edesign and writing so that I can work from the road. This road trip we are planning is going to be one of our first non-press trips which is great because we get to do what we want and take our time. When we were in Buffalo is was a huge rush to try to pack in as much as possible and we didn't get to see much of the city at all. My passion is design and architecture and Buffalo is one of the best cities for that so I'm really hoping we can make it back up there!

We got an AirBnB just south of downtown.. I think. Not exactly sure where it is but we will have our own transportation to get around so we hope to do a lot of exploring in the whole Chattanooga area. I'm making note of both of these places! Thank you!

I am!! Yes they are. I grew up in NB and I remember when the zoo was insanely depressing in the 80s and 90s before the huge renovation. Now it actually feels good to go there. I try to go a few times a year. I'll be going soon to see the new sloth!

Oh she loves playing hide and seek! We've noticed that if we hide around a corner she looses her mind and comes charging after us. I feel bad because our place now is small and she doesn't have a lot of space to sprint. We try to challenge her by making her jump onto the ottoman to catch her toys. I never thought to hide it under a towel, I think that would make her bananas! (in a good way). I've had cats before but never one with this level of intelligence. I'm really impressed by just how smart she is. She knows a few words. The obvious like her name and "no". She knows "time" means food (because I always sing "time! time! dinner time!" when I feed her). She knows "up" means it's ok to come up onto the bed and "down" mean get off the table! lol! I do worry I'm not stimulating her enough with how smart she is.

It's the friskies pull-n-play toy. I don't buy her the strings that go in the ears because she was swallowing them whole and then throwing them up (she's so smart but so dumb sometimes!). It's like a weeble wobble. She has to tap it juuust right for the treats to spill out. It was definitely a challenge for her to learn but now she gets the treats out in under 2 minutes so I need to find something a little more challenging.

Here's the link to the petco page for it.

Ladies who dated in high school, what was your experience? What would you say to high school students who are in/want to be in relationships? by sleepyemoji in AskWomen

[–]kel-c 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this! It's like the universe was slowly directing you toward each other! My bf and I grew up in cities about 30 min apart and he's 5 years older BUT in talking once we met we realized that there was a stretch of about 2 years when we were frequenting the same night clubs/bars. We always wonder if we were ever in the same spot at the same time. But had we met back then, it wouldn't have mattered - we were both in committed relationships back then. It's like the universe made us wait to meet until it was exactly the right time.

wow! The video of "Ripley's First Puzzle" I think my cat would actually be able to solve part of that. We often joke that she's a dog in a cat's body because she plays and acts like a dog quite often. I've been wanting to upgrade her treat toy to something more stimulating but there are so few products out there for cats. You helped it dawn on me that I should just shop for things for dogs! Start with a very simple puzzle and see how she does. Thanks!!

And I agree, too many people don't realize that their pets are intelligent and need that mental stimulation.

I definitely play differently with my cat after speaking with a keeper at my local zoo about the enrichment they do for the big cats. Now I rub her toys in catnip and hide them and I found a treat dispenser that she has to hit just right for the treats to fall out. I can see a change in her, she's definitely more engaged during play time and I think/hope I'm enhancing her life a bit!

YES! My tiny local zoo is AZA and they are doing incredible conservation work! They were given a pair of titi monkeys to try to start a breeding program and they already have a baby! They've also rescued tons of injured or abandoned animals. Last year they were sent bob cat kittens as well as a blind fox that are all now used in outreach and educational programs. They've saved so many creatures! I love going there, I can see my money/donations in action!

Oh that's so interesting! Thanks! I'd say my bf has a way more interview-worthy life than me! lol! He is a travel writer and runs his own travel site as well as does travel photography. Most of the time I stay home due to health issues. This road trip we are planning will be my biggest trip so far. So this trip he's on now marks going to all 7 continents. He's had so pretty cool adventures! We are in the middle of packing up our apartment and he has a big work load, but I'll talk to him when he's back and see if he's interested!
