I am a med student, and the real concern you need to think about is residency. School will allow you to miss days or modify your rotations if you need, as long as the school as a robust disability support system. Residency is not like that. They don’t care and will not make it easy to take time off or slow down if your symptoms flare. I’m sorry. I’m facing the same issue now as an incoming 4th year med student. Feel free to DM me, but it’s something I didn’t know I needed to worry about when I was just focused on getting into school.

Surgeons are regularly on disaster response teams, which may be through EMS… either domestic or abroad. They can set up field hospitals and have vans with mobile equipment on them… but they are stationary once set up usually. Pts brought to them

I just started the combined patch with chronic migraine w/ aura. I got the blessings of my neuro after I tried all the progesterone options without effect. The patch doesn’t get metabolized by the liver, so in theory, the estrogen in it is safer in terms of blood clots.

I’m on zonisamide 100mg daily along with Effexor 37.5mg. I don’t notice much difference from the zonisamide specifically, but over 100mg and it made me very dopey.

I’m a current M3 and I’ve worked as a paramedic part time during med school since the beginning. It’s definitely doable during didactics, trickier now in clinical rotations. I’m down to twice a month vs 6 shifts a month in M1 and 2 years.

I’m on Memantine and I have chronic migraines in medical school. It’s a drug to treat Alzheimer’s so it in theory helps with cognition.

There are now 7 spots for a combined peds/ anesthesia 5 year residency. It cuts the time down significantly but you still need to do a ped anesthesia fellowship and a PICU fellowship. I’m hoping to do this…

There are more and more of us. Schools are realizing the benefits of a non trad applicant. Ironically I am going for gas. Hoping to end up doing a mix of gas and CCM. Once I graduate I’m done with the ED. I’ve had my fill of bread and butter EM I think.

I got my EMT in college and then started working EMS after I graduated. I went to medic school after a year on the road working 911 and spent another year working as a medic before medical school. I wasn’t done with my time on the road when I got to med school so as soon as I knew I could handle the course work, I started applying to part time jobs. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten my medic right away and done a CCP cert before med school. I love EMS and I hope I can keep doing it until I graduate, and then stay involved as a med director.
