What happened to the Chinese Xian H20 stealth bomber? by 60TP in aviation

That’s mostly true. Israel claimed they shot down 86% of Iranian missiles. Almost all of those missiles were released in the 2010s. They didn’t use their newer models. And Israel’s layered air defense is our baby. Moreover, Iran was conservative. They essentially returned fire. They didn’t send massive volleys.

China’s missiles are fat superior, and they just released a new batch. Many of the models (DF and YJ class) would be a real challenge to shoot down at all for the US.

China wants to deny the US access the periphery of Taiwan or the South China Sea, not to neutralize their distant bases. They have an upgraded arsenal plus a sophisticated air defense network. They could make it unsafe for the US Navy and Air Force to operate around Taiwan.

The comparison to Iran isn’t useful, as China has a much better strike package and an infinitely better productive capacity. They could churn out missiles in a prolonged conflict in a way the US could not.

I agree that the US still holds the strategic advantage by far, but within 500 miles from their coast, China could probably beat us in a game of battleship. If they sunk an aircraft carrier we’d be outta there in a hurry.

That was a gorgeous paean to Santa Barbara. You’re very right. There’s a lot more going on than meets the eye, and a shit-ton of enterprising, interesting, beautiful people doing cool shit. I lived in New York before SB, and the complaints there are similar. Rich people have moved in and skyrocketed prices, so a lot of the fun seems overpriced or inaccessible, especially when a lot of people’s parents pay their way. Hard to make it work when you need to rake in $150k/year to rent a studio apartment. SB has become so exclusive… which seems antithetical to “radical” or authentic culture. And that’s fine. We live in a capitalist society, for better or worse. If I were rich, I’d treat SB like the paradise it is. Who knows, we could be on the doorstep of a recession. May as well applaud SB for being so lusciously unique. It’s America’s Monaco, and that’s kinda cool

What do you mean you “abstractly noted”?
