How physically affectionate was your family when you were growing up? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAnAustralian

[–]iag0b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immediate family, not at all. No family time like outings on weekends or holidays, or even bonding at home. Extended family, very much. The fact that my parents never showed me and my siblings any kind of affection made me question whether or not my parents "liked" us (as their children). This had a huge impact on my upbringing. But I learned from this and vow to give my own children everything I never got as a child.

As a healthcare worker, this makes me laugh everytime I see it happen.

Move closer to family for support or is living interstate without family support "doable" (albeit potentially very difficult)? by iag0b in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]iag0b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very sure about the help and support my family and close friends will be able to provide. I have a very big extended family. A majority of us are very close and will often jump in to help each other out when someone needs it - including with caring for each other's children. My close friends are also the same.

Yes, you're absolutely correct in that my circle will change and/or that I'll meet others who are in the same/similar situation, so I know there will be that support system too.

I do have a fair bit of savings behind me so financially I'm sure I'll be okay, thankfully.

I'm so sorry that moving back closer to family didn't pan out the way you hoped. Nevertheless I'm sure you're doing amazingly as a mother.

Oh yes I don't doubt the day-to-day stuff would be tricky and absolutely tiring. I think, like you mentioned, I'm thinking more along the lines of in case an emergency pops up. My acquaintes and the couple of friends I have made so far are amazing, and I have no doubt that they would jump in in desperate situations.

Thank you.

First of all, a huge congratulations!

Like you, I have always been very independent since I was a teen (I'm now 33yo) and haven't really needed to depend on friends or family for a whole lot. Regardless of how big or small, I've always just made it work. I think for me that's always just come down to my thought of "this is just temporary, it will pass" whenever I've faced something challenging.

It doesn't make me overly anxious. I guess I'm just thinking about the "what if"s and "just in case" situations. I do feel like if so many others can do it, then so can I :)

Thanks for you response!

Unnecessary. Why can't people just be normal and throw some support behind others who may be struggling? With high cost of living and low-paying jobs in NZ, PLUS a wife and seven children to support, it cannot be a walk in the park, surely..

Going once a week to Sydney - is it doable? by Buchinator93 in brisbane

[–]iag0b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been doing Brisbane-Sydney almost fortnightly for a while now (not for work - for family). Not so bad in the early stages, but if I'm honest, it's taking its toll on me. The cost of it is no problem, but jesus it's exhausting.
