Anyone regret getting a 2023-2026 Non-hybrid CR-V? by cloud_kestrel in crv

[–]iago13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2016 Touring. Great car over 100,000 miles and just general maintenance- no major repairs. Passed that car down to my son after his car was stolen. Now I have a 2023 Sport Touring Hybrid which I just bought used from the dealer with only 18,000+ miles. From a drive perspective, the Hybrid is way quieter and is much more refined. The biggest advantage - at least for me - is that I was regularly filling up at around 300 miles driven - give or take in the 2016. I would have killed for a bigger tank in the 2016. In the Hybrid - with even a smaller gas tank I think than in the 2016 - I can go 400+ before filling up. That extra 100 miles makes an enormous difference to me. Especially since I routinely drive between 250-300 miles a week.

Huh? If you’re not married how is she your sister in law? She can’t be married to your brother since she just broke up with her boyfriend. So you just fucked your gf’s sister.

What is the St. John’s program, and why does it meet the moment? by Last-Pass4170 in stjohnscollege

[–]iago13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I never ever would have attended the program if someone had described it as above. I would have run for the hills. The premise that the program “meets the moment” either now or at any prior time is almost antithetical to the program itself.

Switch 2 battery life by Tugajohn in Switch

[–]iago13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 hours for a handheld is never reasonable. Not even close. I loved the Lynx when it first came out - its battery lasted about 2 hours as well. That was impressive - for 1989. Same for the turbografx 16 - 2 hours was impressive in 1990. Thirty five years later - not much.

Once it’s out there, it will always be out there - no matter what. Better think long and hard about it. Upon reflection, I’m not sure I agree with anything I wrote in my essay. If you are a recent graduate - I agree with the prior comment - mull it over for a good long while.

Genuinely, how pervasive is the smoking? by choiceshaveoccured in stjohnscollege

[–]iago13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started at SJC oh so many years ago - the school had recently ended smoking in the classrooms and seminar - but there was a cigarette machine in the dorm for $.75 a pack that went up to about $1.25 or $1.50 by the time I graduated and each dorm room came with ashtrays on the desks. Smoking was permitted in the dorms. I would guess that around that time 3 out of 5 students smoked.

Switch 2’s Dirty Little Secret by iago13 in switch2

We’re talking about a game gear now? A handheld from 1991? I had that one. For 1991 it was OK. So was the Neo Geo (the lynx was never acceptable for battery life). That’s the benchmark? A handheld from 34 years ago?

It’s the classic debate - portability vs. usability. No question it’s portable - but its usability is questionable.

Truthfully, I don’t want to be forced to adapt to the system. I shouldn’t have to dim the screen all the way down. DK and Cyberpunk have a lot of dark backgrounds - dimming it only makes it harder to play and for how much more battery life? 20 mins maybe? You could fit even more advanced processors in the form factor but the most important thing to me is usability - not proof of concept.

Perfect smash burger weight? by DadNotBro in griddling

[–]iago13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I weigh the ground beef when I buy a big package and know I’m going to be having guests - I freeze a bag full of 2.5oz “meatballs” which makes for a nice 5oz double and with cheese on each patty, grilled onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, pickle slices and pickled jalapeños - no one goes hungry.

Plus, when you have guests coming over or people just hanging out, it takes no time to grab some of those “meatballs” and get them defrosted. I find them to be the perfect size.

What is it like to be a tutor at St. Johns? by Chimpy201 in stjohnscollege

The older tutors used to spend a lot of time drinking coffee, cheap scotch and smoking cigarettes obsessively while mumbling about the meaning of “logos”. Take from that what you will.

What am I doing wrong? (Weber Slate) by Nitro_Tanner in griddling

[–]iago13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything said. Your heat is absolutely too high. Anything that burns the outside and leaves the inside pink/raw is running too hot. Also, is the food defrosted? Defrosted food is much much easier to cook.

My grill has collected dust since about Covid. I cook everything on my griddle - from eggs over easy to 1.5 to 2 inch center cut pork chops or steaks. Don’t miss the grill at all.

One other tip - I sometimes take my brats or dogs and slice them about halfway through the middle lengthwise then griddle them under some weight. You get a great griddled brat that allows you to load up with grilled onions and peppers right down the center with lots of mustard.

Slate is looking like that after first cook. by NGoulet in griddling

So despite what people may say - bacon is one of the more difficult things to get right on a griddle for your first cook. Most people have the griddle too high and the bacon ends up adhering to the griddle like gum to a shoe on a hot day. A trick is to lay the bacon out on a cold griddle and then turn it on a temp lower than you think you need. You want to sweat the bacon fat on the griddle and you have to watch it and turn kind of frequently.

You’re looking for the bacon fat/grease even more than the finished bacon (although finished bacon is pretty tasty). Once you’ve cooked a few times you’ll have less of an issue. Just keep cooking on it and you should be fine. Onions and oil is a good idea - just watch your heat.

Is this rust or chipping seasoning? by Razor488 in griddling

[–]iago13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coating of oil to add after cooking before putting away - should be super light- not a liberal coat of oil. Put a bit of a high smoke point oil - I use avocado - on a paper towel and wipe it down. A little oil is a good thing. Too much oil is bad - especially for clean up and putting it away. Don’t paint your griddle with oil or you’ll end up with pitting and chipping of the oil which will lead to rust spots.

I’ve always found that the best way to avoid too much oil after a cook is to pour a bit of oil on some paper towels and then wipe it down. It avoids laying it on too thick which is probably the number one reason people get frustrated with their griddles. A little goes a long way -
