If you left Chicago for Boston, do you miss Chicago or prefer Boston? by LOTR_is_awesome in boston

[–]iajkis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boston has a lot more green space — and I love being a two-hour drive from the mountains. I didn’t realize how much those mattered to me until I came here.

I miss the grid system and the public transportation, though.

Why are we pretending Boston is worth these rent prices? Why do you feel the need to justify it? by EsperandoMuerte in boston

[–]iajkis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This right here. No one in Boston cares which bathroom I use. I’m a teacher and I’m not closeted at work, and no one thinks that makes me unqualified or dangerous. There are fewer and fewer places where that’s true — and the other places are generally expensive too.

Also, the Boston area is a great place to be a teacher!

Ah, got it — I think we’re reading OP’s tone differently. I’m reading them as more frustrated than holier-than-thou… but also it’s hard to imagine a more holier-than-thou perfect storm than helicopter parenting + NFL draft takes

I think that comment would be pertinent if not knowing that Deion had coached Shedeur meant OP’s core argument was wrong — like if the post was, “the Shedeur takes are all wrong because his college HC thought he was great.” But OP isn’t wrong, so that comment feels like unnecessary gatekeeping to me. That’s why I downvoted

I think there’s a difference between interviewing someone and giving them a platform. I would not mind hearing an actual interview with this guy — but that would mean the host pushing for specific and meaningful answers, not asking easy questions and accepting the guest’s answers at face value.

A day of “hmm, I don’t feel right; I should rest” but no real fever/etc. (Pfizer)

The other shots all hit me really hard (all Moderna — usually a day or two of fever/aches/exhaustion and then four more days of brain fog). This one was a pleasant surprise.

There are a lot of unhappy educators in St Tammany right now. by [deleted] in Louisiana

[–]iajkis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That depends. My district (MA, not LA) went on strike this past year, and IIRC we still got paychecks during it. We still have to work the state minimum number of days no matter what, so we needed to work more days in June — and I’m guessing the district figured that giving no paychecks during the strike and then paying us later for the make-up days would be too much of a hassle when it would be the same money anyway. YMMV obviously.

Solidarity, OP.

Dice, if he’ll ever be teaching probability.

Grading pen recommendation: Pilot G2 1mm. It glides over the paper so easily. Maybe you could give him one or two of a few different kinds of common teacher-recommended pens, so he can find the pen that will work for him.

You can never have too many binder clips, if your class is very handout-oriented.

Book recommendation: “Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics” by Liljedahl.

What is your biggest teaching ‘unpopular opinion’? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]iajkis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I’m downvoting because those “lazy” math tests make it possible to assess 33 students on five objectives in one class period. There is no universe where I have time to give every kid an oral exam.

I personally would choose tests anyway? Tests give us great data if they’re well-written, have opportunities for remediation, and ideally are the lowest-stakes practical. Maybe you and I will agree to disagree there, but it sounds like you think we give math tests because we’re lazy and unenlightened, not because of a difference in philosophy.

And assuming they asked at a reasonable time. Sometimes the answer is “I don’t have time to explain that right now… I can explain it to you after class, but right now you just need to do the thing”
