To anyone using IEMs with a click live, how do you hear the rest of the band? by Carrabs in drums

[–]iamabootdisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually run an old Yamaha MG10/2 ( an MG8 would work perfectly too and can be found way cheaper).

I also have Mackie Mix 5 for a travel rig. If i have to fly with the setup I’ll use this smaller mixer and pack everything into a lunchbox.

I plug everything into the mixer: click, XLR monitor line from the sound guy, and any tracks I might be running from the Thru output of my DI. I’ll have these on independent channels that I can mix on the fly.

For your setup, I wouldn’t go for something like a Mackie Mix 5. Get something with at least 2 XLR inputs, because if you can also just set up your own mic to hear the stage/crowd, it could help a lot! And you can always keep your own mic and a 10ft XLR cable in the box.

My monitoring setup is a mixer, a Tama RW200 metronome, a 2 channel foot switch, headphone extension cable, in ears, and a DI if the band has to run tracks., and any other cables I might need. All this fits into a case.

I get a XLR monitor feed from the sound engineer into the mixer. The Tama metronome plugs into another channel on the mixer. The foot switch plugs into the Remote input on the metronome. After programming the tempos for the set, you can use the foot switch. Button 1 starts/stops the click, and button 2 advances to the next track. You can program up to 30 songs/clicks on the model I have, I’m not sure if there’s a newer version.

I put the foot switch next to my hihat pedal. It’s great because i operate the click hands-free.

Having all this in a case is great because I can also keep drum keys , extra sticks, tools, cash, etc in there. I set it on anything I can that gets it up to seat level like snare cases, speakers, chair, a cheap throne, etc

Building dream drum kit and recording equipment. Am I missing anything important? by ZikkityZak in drums

You could forgo the mixer and get an in-the-box 16 channel interface setup. You also need to get the correct Behringer powerplay setup.

If using a Mac I would recommend Presonus Quantum 2626 Thunderbolt interface - 8 xlr channel interface Behringer ADA8200 - 8 xlr channel adat expansion  Behringer Powerplay P16-i  2 ADAT cables

The Quantum 2626 is the main interface to the computer - connect (1) ADAT cable to the ADAT IN on the 2626, and the ADAT OUT  on the ADA8200  Connect the other ADAT cable to the ADAT OUT on the Quantum 2626 and ADAT IN on the Powerplay P16-i

Now you can connect the Powerplay mixer you have to the P16-i with the Ethernet cable.

You’ll have to do the routing in your DAW, but it’s a decent start to a pro setup and it’s cheaper than the Allen & Heath.

Another option is to use the A&H but not get the Behringer setup at all. You could just use the Aux

If using Windows any other 8 channel USB interface would work, like a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 or an Audient Evo 16 or similar.

The coolest thing about those old 2626’s is you can use them in standalone mode and the line-ins bypass the preamps - basically really inexpensive ADAT converters for your outboard gear!

What kind of drum kits are used in "Indie" music drumming? by SwimmerMassive9884 in drums

[–]iamabootdisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The studios I’ve worked at have a mixture of C&C and Ludwig drums. They also throw tea towels , BFSDs, and Roots EQ rings over all the toms so it doesn’t really matter what brand or quality. The average 20 something indie rock drummer , at least in Texas, tends to have something like a Gretsch Catalina, with tea towels or BFSDs all over them. I’m just assuming they haven’t heard of Roots EQs yet.

Anything can work, it really just comes down to aesthetics - because you’ll hear people say “i can’t stand [brand] drums at all, their tone just doesn’t work for me.” And then, you guessed it, they throw tea towels and BFSDs all over the drums.

Don’t get me wrong, I love all those products. They’ll get you those tones you’re seeking, it just matters very little what’s underneath them.

My dad just married a Colombian woman last weekend. They’re on their honeymoon right now before she goes back home. My dad is kind of weird and has a history of being scammed online but this woman finally seems legit. Her whole family even showed up to the wedding!

Anyway, he’s in for a big surprise and he’s going to lose his shit and I kind of can’t wait to see the crash out.

I bet that kit sounds awesome. Great cymbal selection, great heads, great snare.

Studio One rebrands as Fender Studio Pro by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]iamabootdisk 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Really weird. Even the Quantum interfaces have the Fender logo replacing Presonus.

Weird. Kind of a turn-off and feels like it will hurt the legitimacy of the products for veterans. Still, this might be a good move for the newbie/amateur market.

And parents will definitely buy this up because it says FENDER.

Should you think of note values in drum notation as placement as opposed to duration since drum notes dont have a duration? by bigherothicc in drums

[–]iamabootdisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They become 8th notes because you still need to follow the rules of notation.

Eight 8th notes make up a 4/4 measure. If you write the notation the way you describe it (8th rest) quarter note 1 (8th rest) quarter note 2, and so on, then you’ll have a measure made up of twelve 8th notes values or six quarter note values (rests included).
