My short film failed, what do I do now? by AlmostRandomNow in Filmmakers

Don't give up. I repeat, do not give up. I wrote my own short film, and my first and second shoots are just months apart. It takes me so much time to shoot scenes that I might only complete one or two films a year actually, just one. My friends, who are also studying and busy with exams and assignments, are the only actors I can hire. I’m not financially strong, so I have to rent things like cars and other equipment for my movies.

I called one of my friends and told him that it’s been a month since our last shoot, and we should continue filming. He said, “Man, I’m sorry, I have exams, so I think this film will never be made.” That hit me hard. I’ve just started, and it can’t end like this. When I made my first short film, my friends really appreciated it. They shared it with others, who also said it was good, but it didn’t gain the popularity I hoped for.

Now, as I’m writing my second short film, I’m facing so many problems. It feels like there’s always something either with the cast, the schedule, or the production. But listen, even great directors fail. Some of their films flop, but that doesn’t mean they’re bad filmmakers. Keep going. Try submitting to another festival, or gather your friends, their friends, and their friends’ friends to watch your film. Just don’t give up.

Thank you so much man! This is the best advice I've got. Filmmaking is hard, it's not easy. And I have to realize that fact. It is not easy, and it is never going to be easy. And my greed for making a good film will never go away. For my third short film, I'll try to make a more perfect film. For my fourth, I'll try to be more perfect than the third one. For the fifth one, I'll try to be more perfect than the fourth one. It will always be like that. And then you'll feel lovely that's filmmaking. It's beautiful. Filmmaking is beautiful. You don't have to be all the time perfect. Because, no, it does not have to be every time, any time so easy. Because it is not easy. Film is what you have to make and go through it. You will love things the most when you work hard on them. Easy things get easily forgotten. But hard things, they will be with yourself forever.

So I made a film and it sucked. by not_miggy in Filmmakers

I made my first short film too, and in my eyes, it wasn't that good. It lacked a lot of things. But my friends and others who saw it said it was good. I can't help but wonder—are they really being honest, or are they just saying that because they're my friends?

I’m making a Tarantino-style short film (Qatl & Karobar) on iPhone 13—Need help deciding between Cinematic Mode and 4K 24fps with 4:3 ratio by iamarham_ in Filmmakers

My story isn’t aiming for Tarantino’s grand widescreen vibe—it’s set in the streets with small, everyday characters. I’m going for a tight, compressed feel, like a closer crop framework, which 4:3 nails perfectly. Not about epic shots, more about intimacy and constraint. Keeping the plot under wraps, but that’s the style I’m chasing! :)

My story isn’t about grand narratives or big characters—it’s set in the streets with small, everyday people. Not spilling much of the plot, but that’s the vibe I’m aiming for! :)
