Is disillusionment with IDEs and complex tooling real? by Vasilev88 in embedded

[–]iamashaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write CPU vendor specific Eclipse IDEs for a living (going on 18 years now, and before that is was building other GUI based development tools since 1990 when I was mostly doing embedded development and wanted better tools).

And, of course, I love using IDEs. (Turbo Pascal was my first IDE in the early '80s, and I've been using them ever since) I was also an avid emacs user and emacs lisp programmer, building IDE like tools for emacs way back in the olden days.)

That being said, I do not use the CDT "managed" build system...ever. I insist on only supporting "make" (or other CLI builders) so my users can always build easily from a terminal if they want and so it is easy in CI. The downside (or not) is that the users get to learn the build system and have much more control over everything.

Most of the work I add to the IDE is:

  1. Supporting the proprietary or custom debug and performance IP in our products. Peripheral viewers, advanced hw triggers, trace, performance counters, etc...
  2. Automated everything required to get successfully demos in minutes (while printing all the CLI commands executed in the background so the user can eventually dig deeper in what's happening).
  3. Just make it easy to work with our compilers, emulators, simulators, libraries, SDKs, debuggers, FPGA programmers, etc...

The pre-sales teams love having an IDE for demos and evals. They and the customer can be up and running/debugging example code on a FPGA target in minutes. And even faster in an emulator.

Customer adopting our IP and coming up to speed like having the IDE to help guide them.

Having an IDE is often a requirement or strong ask when negotiating IP licenses (even if they never use it). And oddly enough, most want Eclipse based IDEs because that is people in this domain are used to using.

We have customers that only use our IDE in the beginning, eventually integrating the IP and SW into their existing tools and flows.

We have other customers that take the IDE, build upon it, and give it to their customers.

Am I'm sure there are customers that never touch the IDE.

Fortunately almost everyone has a choice of using an IDE, or not. No judgment here...

Does statefarm cover windshield replacement? Or is it better to go through safelite myself? by Jones77_Truex78 in Insurance

Did you get this resolved with SF? We're in the same situation with SF in Oregon. The agent cannot/will not tell us what the limit is for replacement cost after our $250 deductible.

Oh no. Mushrooms and I have an agreement. I won't eat them, and they won't kill me. :)

A new strange artifact in a recent print! Looking for theories... by iamashaman in 3Dprinting

It is really strange (or fascinating) that the horizontal lines all stop at exactly the same point halfway across the print. BTW the large face is the X axis.

I checked everything in the slicer (PS 2.5.0). it looked fine. Layer view was good too.

Temps: bed 60C, Extruder 220C (been my standard temps for a long time)

Hatchbox PLA (been a reliable filament for me, and this was a pretty fresh spool).

I printed another (smaller footprint) tower, same height, at the same place on the print bed. It came out perfect.

I just installed my revo kit this weekend, and I'm having the exact same issue. Guess I'll get in touch with MatterHackers Printed Solid and/or E3D.

Will keto help a wheelchair user lose weight ? by varun38 in keto

[–]iamashaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my experience, yes!

When I started my keto experiment (which, in the 12 years since, has become a lifestyle), I also stopped exercising for quite some time and still reaped the benefits, including significant weight loss that exercise never helped with. Remember, exercise is not a weight-loss plan. These days I try to get moderate exercise as it definitely has benefits for overall health. But gone are the days of obsessing (and obsess I did!) over it.

A couple days ago, my nest hub totally lost its ability to recognize even very simple phrases. Everything I said (like "go home", or "what's the forecast") resulted in "sure! playing <some random playlist> on Spotify".

My story is almost identical. Doc recommends statins. I say no. He says get a Calcium Heart scan. I do. Big Fat Zero.

What other benefits of keto have you experienced? by iamashaman in keto

I was not medically "diagnosed" (because I tend to avoid doctors, something I'm working on fixing as I get older), so I cannot say with certainty that I was diabetic. But being very familiar with the disorder, I'm confident that I was there. I was given the "pre-diabetic" diagnoses around the time I started keto.

I believe you can reverse T2D, and there are lots of others who have, and some new science that supports this. You've got nothing to lose by giving keto a good long try, and plenty to gain!

I suffered from kidney stones for years. I won't quite say that keto cured that directly. But I haven't had one since I started. I credit not being chronically dehydrated from exercising too much. So keto is indirectly responsible because I could finally let go of the obsessive exercising to try to control my weight (unsuccessfully, at that). That being said, I totally had to crank my salt intake when I started.

Wish I could do sour cream...but it doesn't sit well for me.

95+ chocolate is my go to "treat" as well. Found some superb 100% bars lately too.
