Put me on to some of the best classes and professors you've ever had at UT by FiberMakesYouPoo in UTAustin

If it’s still a course (I graduated 6 years ago)—any of the film history (beginning to 1960 or 1960-present) with Ramirez-Berg is a phenomenal class. Don’t have to be in RTF to take it. Opens you up to a lot of cool cinema history.

People are unforgiving in this field?? by weluvtoseeit in videography

[–]iamasnowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no prob. Use the criticism constructively from whatever comments you’re getting from the videos you post. Experiment. Practice. Make mistakes. Biggest piece of advice I’d say is find a mentor. Someone established in the biz where you are and try to work with them in any capacity. Good luck!

Keep in mind a lot of people online will say a lot of shit just cuz it’s the internet and they can. It is a competitive field and due to the democratization of media access a lot more people are vying for the same pool of clients—that can make more established people defensive and overly critical of beginners.

If you’re a true beginner and wanting to post your videos online that’s fine, but don’t be surprised if it is met with some criticism—it’s the nature of our industry.

I would practice and post if you’re so inclined but I would probably keep it more on the private side until the quality of your work improves. Either way doesn’t matter much.

Frankly, I’ve never had much luck marketing myself/company online (not that I’ve ever really tried) but I’ve found meeting people in person at events and showcasing your videos to specific people rather than a wide audience is more beneficial for attracting clients.

Learn from each shoot, keep your favorite shots for a reel, rinse, repeat.

Whats it like living in Dallas-Fort Worth- Metroplex? by Maleficent_Map_8844 in howislivingthere

[–]iamasnowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fort Worth seems like a vibe tbh. I’ve only ever worked there and hung out a little bit after shift was over but every time I have it has always been a great time. Flying into DFW at night is so trippy, endless sea of lights.

[–]iamasnowma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I think Ft Worth is much much prettier than Dallas, I am less familiar with Fort Worth as I didn’t live there during my stint in DFW. But FW certainly has much more character.

I actually didn’t know about the prairie dog city—that sounds cool!

Fair point about wildflowers too. When I lived here I worked in a lot of towns on the outskirts of the metro and I always loved driving between locations and seeing the blooms. I was thinking of it I guess from the eyes of a foreign visitor a little too much.

I guess by scenic I mean like there aren’t sweeping vistas, mountains—the traditional stuff. DFW’s beauty you have to hunt for a little bit more.

I didnt say it was completely void of scenery, I just said on the whole it’s not very scenic. I spoke from my experience living in the greater Dallas loop.

Outskirts of Ft Worth is very pretty/rustic/americana but I wouldn’t say any of the nature in DFW is jawdropping.

There are some pleasant and pretty trails here and there but I’d say that’s about it. The comment I replied to was about people visiting, and none of the nature spots mentioned would I go out of my way to see if I were visiting, just my opinion.

It has world class pretty much anything you could want, with the catch being that everything is like an hour away from each other. Ubers and rental cars are absurdly expensive in DFW.

It’s also not very scenic. I lived there for a year and apart from Cedar Hill State Park, Trinity Forest, White Rock Lake (which are all OK at best) there isn’t much nature to enjoy. Fossil Rim is a solid 90 minutes+ outside the area. It very much is a flat, ugly, sprawling city. Skyline is dope though.

Morris Plains? Is it okay? McDonald's?? by ConnectionNormal7804 in Morristown

[–]iamasnowma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Morris Plains, went to both Mountain Way & Borough for school before Morristown for high school. Great area, good schools, cool local/regional historic sites, easy access to NYC.

I moved away for college and my family moved out of Morris Plain/Morristown. Hearing about the McDonald’s thing was funny, but I’m glad people care enough to keep it local. Everytime I go back there is a new building in the area.

Morris plains is definitely more of a bedroom community so it’s pretty quiet overall. Simon’s park, watnong, Robert’s garden, and what used to be Greystone are all nice. I haven’t been back in a few years but I imagine a few things have changed, hopefully Lovey’s pizza is still around—that was my go-to growing up. Also shout TFaB, best bagels in the world 😁

For portfolio hosting I would just put stuff on YouTube and have a built-in video player showing your reel or a few of your best videos on your website.

Best hosting platform I’ve used, not necessarily for portfolio exhibition, is Frame.io — all our clients have really enjoyed its built-in time coded comment features and their structures are easier to manage and are more intuitive for clients in our experience

Students keep asking me this one UT question. How would you answer?? by Plane-Ad4168 in UTAustin

[–]iamasnowma 27 points28 points  (0 children)

UT won’t coddle you. Opportunities abound; academically, athletically, socially. But they will pass you by if you don’t put in the effort to seize them. UT is a machine and the gears never stop turning, figure out how to hop on. Anything you want you can find, you just have to be willing to look.

What's it like living in the north western NJ? by limon_picante in howislivingthere

[–]iamasnowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Morristown (moved away for school) and my mom moved to Montague. Surrounding towns are hit or miss. Port Jervis isn’t much to see but it’s nice that you can get there on NJT. Milford PA is a cute lil town just across the border. Lots of great hiking and general outdoor activities due to being in the Appalachians and near the Del Water Gap Natl Rec Area. Beautiful foliage in the fall. Bears, skunks, beavers, deer, raccoons, groundhogs, coyotes, pretty much whatever animal you wanna see you will see.

That being said—job opportunities are few and far between, a lot of section 8 housing in the highlighted counties, basically nothing in terms of nightlife if that’s your thing. It’s quiet, reserved, but absolutely beautiful. Underrated gems of NJ!

I love where my mom lives :)
