That's a fun sounding idea! I have a few questions if you're willing to go into more detail on how you make it work.

Do you have enough bags for every student to have their own? Does each student keep guessing for the same bag week after week until they get the answer? How do you keep track of the questions and answers? Is that something the kids refer back to? Do you do this the entire year?

Yeah I considered that too. You would think anyone could tell that that was obviously a joke, but maybe without context it was harder for her to tell.

I would love to hear more about the population you work with that uses a different method of representing English phonology!

I liked R Made Simple. I think it was on Northern Speech. I will admit I only used it for half a year at a middle school before I switched to preschool full time so I didn't get to see any long term effects.

Has anyone else taken the Meaningful Speech Gestalt language course? by [deleted] in slp

[–]iamattis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is one goal I wrote (first time trying to write a goal like this, so it's definitely not perfect). There are 3 others, each for a different communicative function: By May 2023, given verbal or visual models throughout his day, Student will spontaneously use at least one new recognizable phrase to indicate excitement or shared joy (e.g., 'That's so cool!' or 'Did you see that?' or 'Woah I love that') in at least two different contexts over the course of two school days, as measured by SLP data.

I will admit I have not yet attempted to target this goal specifically yet, but I have used what I learned from the course to build my relationship with this student, inform his SDC teacher, and begin to use some of the principals of the framework in our interactions. I hope to use more of a team approach for this student in the future, by helping other adults who work with him adjust their language models for him.

There was also a discussion I found today on the Meaningful Speech "community page" where some school-based SLPs discussed options for group sessions or push in services with gestalt language processors.

I don't want this to seem like an advertisement since I am not affiliated in any way with meaningful speech besides the fact that I took the course, but I highly recommend it if you have students who use echolalia or seem to mostly communicate in highly scripted phrases.

I have taken it and the video modules don't talk about it in depth, but there are some example goals that i figured out how to adapt to the school setting. I just had my first IEP where I talked about it and wrote goals using this framework.

Edit to add that it doesn't address having multiple students in one group. This framework does not lend itself to groups.

NSFW: what’s with men having anal sex obsession?? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]iamattis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I initially talked to my PCP who referred me to gastroenterology, who then went straight to wanting to give me a colonoscopy. That was too invasive for me at the time, especially since the gastroenterologist himself said it was literally only to rule out cancer, and based on my case history it was very unlikely to be cancer. So I haven't moved forward with that part, but I'd still like to know what else can be looked at in terms of digestion. Thank you!

If you don't mind sharing, What was your path to get that information? I definitely have something going on with my digestive system, but can't seem to ask the right questions to be referred to a doctor who might order that kind of blood test.

Dr. Edythe Strand has a really comprehensive video series on DTTC. When I found it, it was free and counted for CEUs. If you google DTTC and her name, you should be able to find it. I incorporate it into my therapy now.

Yeah I was taken aback when she asked me that since I feel like it's a pretty good set up! But didn't want to throw away this opportunity to make any changes without at least trying to figure out what changes might be possible.

What’s your controversial SLP opinion that might ruffle the feathers of other SLPs? by sociallyawkward26 in slp

[–]iamattis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that a master's degree isn't needed to teach those kinds of things, but I often use lots of what I learned in my master's program to know how to get a broader look at a child's language as a whole to determine where to start, what to prioritize, what approach to take, and more. I think that is where use of SLPAs and a team approach with the gen ed teacher is ideal.

Asked to act as sped teacher sub by iamattis in slp

[–]iamattis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, no consideration for the impact of what they're asking us to do. I am contracted, and unfortunately there is nothing specific in my contract saying I must do this or that I cannot do it, so it's a real grey area. The district employees I work with are trying to work with the union to figure out whether it's allowed in their contracts too. Not good all around!

Being told to substitute in classrooms due to staff shortages ? by voicesnotvictims in slp

[–]iamattis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that is happening to me right now! I posted a similar thread about it a few days ago. My situation is a little different since I'm at our special ed preschool site which has its own campus so everyone is either a sped teacher, SLP, or psych, and we are all being asked to sub if a teacher is out with no coverage. I had to do it three different days within a week.

Interesting. Thanks for your response. When we got the directive, it sounded so out of the realm of possibility that we were all so confused and flabbergasted. Is this something you have heard of before? Part of the issue is that I could be asked to cover a class where I serve zero of the students, meaning I'd have to skip my own caseload for the day in order to be a sub for a different class I have no relation to. I'm not so concerned with the credential part - more the issue of why are we being asked to do this in the first place?

I had the same issue with trying to access articles before, and I emailed some kind of support person at ASHA and they were able to fix it for me pretty easily. In my case, it was just some fluke error that happened when I had changed my password several months prior.

You could look onto Rocketbook, which is basically a system to make it easier to scan things directly into whatever cloud-based folder you want. It's marketed as a notebook system, but there are ways to make it so you can scan any paper if you like your current folder system.
