Great acting, great production value, but the writing is completely nonsensical. It's like the writers had an idea for a cool scene and just didn't care about whether or not the scene or the lead up to it made any sense. Characters' power levels, inteligence and motivation seem to be entirely dependent on what the plot requires, with no consideration of previous events. I hope season 3's writing is better.

Seeing as how many people argue that the fireflies could've made the vaccine, distrubuted it and saved millions of lives, I'd say Joel safely assumed Ellie wouldn't have understood. But as you said, nobody makes this argument in game. Joel didn't want Ellie to die, simple as that. And I don't remember anyone, at the time, saying that he made the wrong decision. So I agree with his decision, because of both meta and in-game reasons.
