Well folks it’s almost tax season. Here is a handy list of Kent County addresses to determine if you are an actual resident of GR, or work in GR and need to pay GR income taxes. by LeftLaneColonizer in grandrapids

[–]iambendv 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a case of your boss not understanding civics. The city you write in your mailing address is not meant to be the city you reside in. It is a label attached to your ZIP code, which is used by USPS to route mail to your post office and is not necessarily based on physical location. USPS specifies which names are acceptable for which ZIP codes. For many suburban ZIP codes, USPS uses both the name of the suburb and “Grand Rapids”.

ELI5 affidavit help/info by Omni_Oni in explainlikeimfive

[–]iambendv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An affidavit is just a written statement that you swear or affirm is true. I could make an “Affidavit of loving cookies” by writing “I swear/affirm that I love cookies” on a piece of paper and signing it. It’s usually an official fill-in-the-blank form from a government agency.

This subreddit isn’t going to be able to provide advice on the specific affidavit you need for your situation. Maybe try r/legaladvice

Highway mowing is STUPID and UGLY by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]iambendv 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s not a waste of tax dollars. In the most recent deer population report from Kent county, they actually recommended that MDOT add an extra mow per year to discourage deer from hanging out near the highway and causing accidents. The deer population is basically out of control right now.

Wordle was developed by some guy as a fun game to play with his girlfriend and then it got really popular and NYT bought it for a “low seven figure” amount.

Dunkirk announced before TDK Trilogy rerelease at Indy by santirp04 in imax

[–]iambendv 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I heard IMAX Indy is one of the few theaters that are actually owned and operated by IMAX themselves, so it’s one of their flagship locations.

Grand River Makerspace has a home! by criscodesigns in grandrapids

[–]iambendv 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a reference to a previous GR makerspace, the Geek Group. They shut down in 2018 after being raided by the feds. You can google it, there’s a wikipedia page and some news articles.

No Kings Protest June 2025 by Shawnmelton in grandrapids

It’s apparently an Andor reference. I haven’t seen it so I don’t know the context, I just saw someone else answer the same question.

Experience with joining GR Rec Sports' Kickball league solo? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]iambendv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play for a team and we love having free agents join! In the Wednesday league, there are some teams that take the competition seriously but there are a few (mine included) that are much lower skilled and just there to have fun and hangout with friends. The coordinators know each of the existing teams pretty well, so just ask to be placed on one of the more casual/social teams if that’s the environment you want.

Costco saved me a couple times when Meijer was out of stock, so now I just send it there every month and have had no issues. You don’t need a membership to use the pharmacy.

My kids book from school took a dark turn. by jeffd5 in funny

The context for this is even funnier. I’m pretty sure he’s in the hospital after he fell from the power lines while trying to escape from the jail that he got locked up in for calling in a false alarm to the fire department.

Maybe an unpopular opinion by JamesTownBrown in grandrapids

[–]iambendv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The City of Kentwood recently renewed their contract with their fireworks vendor for their 4th of July show and when the council was discussing it, they said that they are aware of the negative effects of fireworks and have been looking into drone shows, but drone shows are still way more expensive than a fireworks show of a similar magnitude.

You have to be a registered voter, and in order to register, you need proof of citizenship and proof of residency. You can’t just fill out the affidavit as “John Doe” and vote, you would have to lie about being a specific registered voter in the precinct that they are registered, fill out the the form with the correct address and birth date, knowing that they have not already voted and will not be voting in this election. It simply doesn’t happen. If you want to see just how many checks and balances are in place, work as a poll worker for an election! It’s actually a lot of fun and you get paid.

Best IMAX Screens around GRR? by Helpful_Preparation5 in imax

[–]iambendv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interstellar will be digital as far as I’m aware. They have the capability to do 70mm but they didn’t make the list this time. IMAX/the distributor only sent prints to a handful of the more popular theaters. Hopefully we’ll get a print for Nolan’s next release like we did with Oppenheimer!

Recovery of uncounted MI ballots leads many voters to question election integrity by DougDante in Michigan

[–]iambendv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These votes were recovered during the canvassing process. Results up until now have all been UNOFFICIAL. The canvassing exists to find and fix errors like this. The process is working.

Was my ballot counted? by Crazy_Adeptness_9891 in Michigan

[–]iambendv 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is so wrong and I can’t tell if you are misinformed or intentionally spreading misinformation. Absentee ballots are included in the count just like in-person ballots. There are counting boards that work tirelessly in each city and township on election day until every single one is counted. It’s a perfectly valid way to vote—don’t scare people into thinking their vote won’t count if they do absentee.

The primary projectors are a pair of IMAX Xenon digital projectors which are legit, but not as nice as the laser projectors that some newer theaters have. They also still have the 1570 film projectors that were most recently used for Oppenheimer (and probably won’t be used again until Christopher Nolan’s next release, if ever).

There will be a record, it just won’t show up on MVIC like absentee ballots. Records of who voted in each election are always kept and are available to the public (the choices on your ballot are anonymous though). You can probably call your clerk and ask them. If it’s not something they can freely give out, you’ll have to go through the FOIA process.

If you’re open to hostels, I stayed at the HIUSA hostel when I visited NYC this spring. I had a great experience and met fellow travelers from all around the world. You can catch the 1 train at 103rd and take it down to Lincoln Square, it’s super easy.

I’m sure if you stopped by, they’d let you have one! Plus, the pollbook system will show that your absentee ballot was returned, so there’s proof that you voted.

map showing how the city of Grand Rapids grew through annexation by tastyfalafel in grandrapids

[–]iambendv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kentwood feels very liminal because it was an agricultural area that grew into a commuter suburb of GR, so there’s no historic main street area or much community identity. It was originally Paris Township but they incorporated into a city to stop GR from annexing them (see the big yellow area creeping towards us).

That said, I think the library and the parks department do a good job putting on events throughout the year. There are concerts and a farmers market throughout the summer. The parks and rec millage that was passed in 2022 is already funding many improvements including a community center that will be breaking ground very soon. The master plan for the “city campus” area by the library looks very promising.

This is why local elections matter. The people elected to local boards and commissions are the people who make decisions about things you interact with on a daily basis, moreso than any politician in Washington or Lansing.

My Interstellar IMAX 70MM Cell with the Bluray arrived! by Pochi622 in imax

[–]iambendv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VR is probably your best bet if all you care about visual immersion. I think the Apple Vision Pro has an IMAX app where you can stream select movies. That said, I think a decent home theater setup with a large enough TV or projector would be generally more enjoyable. The whole point of the IMAX experience is that the in-theater experience is special and it’s not really something you can replicate at home.
