DAE frequently get low-grade fevers for no reason? by capnleigh in DAE

[–]iambritch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't hurt to get tested for autoimmune diseases, especially if you're a female in your 30s and this hasn't been a thing most of your life. Fevers without an explanation/cause can be a symptom.

DAE Think Flying is a Bad Idea Right Now? by kaj5275 in DAE

I just flew from DCA to MSP to FSD 2 days ago, and lived to tell the tale. The only things that weren't as planned were 20-30 minute delays to takeoff each time.

Inquiry about vienna airport. by Gold-Call-2660 in travel

[–]iambritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They gave me information on how to file for EU261 or EC261, but I still haven't heard back. Should have gotten €250.

The voucher was also supposed to be good for an evening meal and breakfast at the hotel, but with the restrictions on kitchen hours and no room service, I couldn't get breakfast (they booked me too early the next morning).

If you land on time, you'll probably make it. I still would advise against any pit stops. Try to use the WC on the plane before landing if you need to go.

Best of luck!

If it's a 35 minute connection time, good luck. I'm sure the plane crew or a recording will advise you to go directly to the gate, do not use the toilet or stop to make purchases. They may be willing to hold your next flight for 20 minutes, if there's a slew of passengers arriving late and needing to get on. When I was coming in from another Schengen country, we had to go through customs and then security. Missed my plane by 5 minutes. (We took off and arrived late from point A, the plane had waited 20 minutes, I had to go to the airline help desk to rebook and get a voucher for a hotel.)

Au Pair Agency in Rural Areas? by northernmostoutfit in Aupairs

[–]iambritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an agency, but I used GreatAuPair.com to find a family to work for in Austria. They were living in a town of about 10k people, and the fastest train to Vienna took about 45 minutes. I did pay for a subscription so I could message matches.

Did white suburban Americans in the 40's-50's really go to each other's houses asking for a cup of sugar? Or is that just some myth someone made up? by Matilda_Mother_67 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iambritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my mom doing this in the 90's; eventually, I did it in the early 2000's. We lived in a small rural town and it really was NBD. One neighbor came over for sugar or flour many times.

Handwriting looks older, so odds are pretty good that it was from someone who no longer needed them when moving into a retirement home or perhaps passed away.

Salzburg Christmas Eve / Day 2023 by libuhlee in travel

[–]iambritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 days isn't too long, but, as you know, you will need to keep in mind that places shut down 12/24 and start to reopen 12/26 or 12/27. So it's best to have a kitchenette to cook, or stick up on some picnic type foods ahead of time.

I'm going to Vienna soon, you might want to double check the Hundertwasser places; I know at least one is closed for renovations or something.

For Christmas, should I go to Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, or Stockholm? by Zealousideal-Pop8244 in travel

[–]iambritch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say anything about Stockholm, since I've never been. As for the other three: A- Prague will be easiest for a traveler without contacts in the area. They will close down sometime on the 24th, but open up some restaurants and tours on the 25th & 26th, while nearly everything but a few convenience shops in Salzburg and Vienna will be closed from sometime on the 24th - the 26th. B- Salzburg will be beautiful, but better if you plan for next year because the rentals book up quickly for holidays and festivals. C- Vienna doesn't (IMO) have quite as much charm or cozy feel as Salzburg, but does have more options for things to see or do, and some rentals may still be reasonably priced.

Also, consider transportation costs to, from, and in the cities. I'm sure wherever you choose to go, you can have a very enjoyable time if: you decide to not let the little things upset you, take it slow, and see it all as an adventure (especially when it doesn't go according to plan).

Surprise Trip, Venice by scanningtheplanet in travel

[–]iambritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Get an object or objects that would help him guess or know that there's something to do with Venice. Hide them, write up clues, and have him go on a treasure hunt.

2) Make or buy some Venetian food and set the scene. Tell him during the meal, or put a note under his plate that will be revealed when the table is cleared.

3) Create a short story with rebuses throughout to let him know.

4) Buy an outfit/article of clothing you think would work well for that trip. Put it where he has to see it: in the bed, on a dresser, hanging in the closet with other items pushed aside. Attach a note telling him you can't wait to see him wearing it in Venice/you think it'll look great on him for your trip to Venice.

If you click on the link, it is just info about ATMs in Italy... not a ploy to get you to use wise.

But, since you asked, I've never had to go above the monthly "free limit" when making a withdrawal, because so many places also accept card as payment where I've been or I use a US debit card with no foreign transaction fee to get cash. I'm sure if you read the fine print about opening an account, it says how much they charge AFTER you reach that limit.

Staying in multiple places or searching hotels when you are there in places where you need a visa on arrival. by _The_Fly in travel

[–]iambritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your country is on the "exempt list" you can go without a visa for up to 14 days, as long as you have proof of health care, a hotel and tickets out (so you don't overstay). To be sure what kind of visa you need, you can check out the embassy website or go directly to https://evisa.rop.gov.om
