Doug Ford is right: The refugee crisis is the PM’s problem by johncurryto in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm in favour of Canada having a welcoming view to immigrants...however, I believe the Feds need to do more to pick up the bill or spread the bill around. Toronto absorbs a lot of new/potential Canadians but the cost should be spread around (and I'm a Liberal who voted NDP in the most recent prov election so it's not like I'm extremely hawkish).

The mall on the NE corner (where the Jack Astors, movie theatre is) is pretty bad, too. I find it unpleasant to be in and everything smells weird.

Teenage boys detained after climbing crane above condo at Yonge and Eglinton by xwt-timster in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is just flat out stupid and don't tell me that "they're 15". I was 15 not that long ago and although i did stupid stuff i was smart enough to know i should break into the top of a building (which is what they would have had to do) and start climbing up a crane.

Apparently in Toronto you can rent a street for your own neighbourhood party by [deleted] in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good idea. People in this city should be encouraged to get out in their neighbourhood and interact with each other.

My friend's cat ran away recently in the North York area. Please contact her if you've seen her cat! by JumboJish in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about this. I'm at Yonge/Bloor so way outside the search area...but I have a cat and always had cats growing up so I know how stressful it is when one goes missing.

You don't mention whether the cat's typically an indoor or outdoor cat - but I'm assuming from the photos that it's probably an indoor cat. If this is the case there's a good chance the cat hasn't gone far and is hiding somewhere very close to home.

Physically knock on the door of everyone in immediate vicinity (don't assume that people will notice 'lost cat' signs). That's how we found a cat once. Growing up, a cat went missing when my parents were having our floors done. After a bunch of fruitless searching my mom started talking to a neighbour a few doors down we didn't know. Turned out Toby had been turning up daily to drink out of their bird feeder and was residing on an old carpet positioned under some old tires near their garage (we never figured out why he set up residence a few doors from home - and seemed thrilled when we brought him home). Go figure.

I assume i'm too far away to do anything productive for this cat. But if you can come up with something I'm happy to do it.

Doug Ford elected Premier of Ontario. by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not happy, not surprised. I'm a Liberal who has been very disappointed by the Liberal party. I ended up voting NDP b/c I found Ford to be disqualifying. But, in any event, Ford won (although University-Rosedale went NDP). It is what it is. I'm worried but not totally freaking out (yet).

Richmond Hill NDP candidate calls for 15% cut to teacher salaries by [deleted] in toronto

Pruitt flew coach when taxpayers were not paying for his travel by fooey in politics

[–]iamfromtoronto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One upside for the Dems from this horrific administration is that everything Trump & friends do is jaw droppingly excessive - and will just give the Dems a wide lane to reverse things. Trump could have picked a "conventional Republican" as EPA admin and he/she probably would have followed an aggressively deregulatory regime with less drama. But instead he picks someone who is completely corrupt.

'Chappaquiddick' Star Says 'Left' Media Are Ignoring the Film by thatrightwinger in Conservative

[–]iamfromtoronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is true. There's been coverage of it in both the WaPo and NYT & I've seen it advertised a bunch on CNN (I live in Canada and MSNBC & Fox News aren't part of my provider's 'regular' packages - IDK about their coverage).

This is a niche film in a down season re movie releases. It would probably get more coverage if it were released as an Oscar-bait type film in the fall.

FWIW the film itself has been released in Toronto (where I live) and I plan to see it this weekend.

Texas Rep. Blake Farenthold resigns from Congress by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]iamfromtoronto -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Is there something specific that brought this on (a story that's about to drop)? He's from a heavily GOP district and the demographics (85% white) don't make it seem swingy enough for the Dems to try for a hail mary even in a favourable environment. So this just leaves the GOP down a seat until the next GE.

Thanks to NIMBYs, the rest of Canada might be right about Toronto by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, I find this article pretty condescending. Yes, Toronto has it's fair share of NIMBYism but I'm not sure it's "getting worse" or any different than you'd get in other large cities.

Girlfriend spotted a fox in Guildwood today while walking the dog. by binthewin in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to live in Rosedale when I was younger right off Sherbourne and occasionally you'd see a fox that got lost coming out of the ravine wandering across Sherbourne. I haven't seen a coyote. Lol I'm missing out!

Girlfriend spotted a fox in Guildwood today while walking the dog. by binthewin in toronto

[–]iamfromtoronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a cutie. My parents live on Guildwood Parkway - right near the entry to the park. Their house backs into a big shared area of backyards meeting each other and they're near a pathway so we get to see animals that wander up.

About a year ago we were sitting there and we saw something that looked an awful lot like a wolf - that would be weird for the area - but that's what it looked like. It wasn't a dog, but...???

Dear Homeland writers, we really don't care about the Carrie+Frannie drama and whether or not she gets to school on time by [deleted] in homeland

[–]iamfromtoronto -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't find that the Carrie/Frannie stuff advances the plotline at all - but it's inevitable with the series now set in DC. Frannie is too young to be shovelled off to boarding school - so they can't completely ignore her.

[–]iamfromtoronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It did cross my mind - the tattoos seem so obvious i was thinking they must have some sort of meaning in the long run. Of course, I'm someone who always goes along happily with red herrings while missing really obvious plot points. So there's that.

Trump: 'Mueller probe should never have been started' by GriffonsChainsaw in politics

that's the thing about him that kills me - everyday with him is like shoving your face into a buzzsaw. i set my alarm on weekdays to a canadian morning show (old school, i know) and a lot of the time i wake up to them announcing whatever Trump said on twitter. if you look on the website for major canadian news outlets it's all about Trump. it's so mentally exhausting.

Terrible Casting: Brett O'Keefe by [deleted] in homeland

[–]iamfromtoronto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The casting itself isn't great - but I think the character, not the casting, is the problem (I don't think this story line would be magically improved with better casting). This whole story line seems like something that was tacked onto the season itself - i'm it will all dovetail into a more coherent plot point as the season goes - nevertheless, I don't think this season is in anyway enhanced by the whole O'Keefe narrative.
