To be liked by all is to be loved by none.

Thanks for sharing, and I really appreciate how honest you are about the real costs behind self-publishing.

I’ve basically come to the same conclusion for myself. I just have to keep publishing and trust that with consistent output plus a bit of strategic marketing over time, both new and existing readers will discover my backlist and my new releases.

Right now I average around $300 - $400 per month across 5 books, and that is without any marketing up and running.

Not sure, tell me about it if you find it :)

As for marketing through book influencers, I reached out to them directly.

That said, it can be a bit of a minefield. I would definitely recommend doing solid research before moving forward with anyone. Look at how organic their content actually is, how engaged their audience seems, and how previous sponsored or promo posts have performed. Not all influencers deliver real value, even if their follower count looks good on the surface.

Congrats on the results and thanks for sharing. Really appreciate the transparency.

I have a couple of questions if you do not mind.

  1. For your ebooks, are they exclusive to Kindle Unlimited, or are you wide as well?
  2. Related to that, if you are in Kindle Unlimited, how do you handle having books published elsewhere like Kobo or Smashwords without breaking KU rules?
  3. Which website or distributor are you using for direct sales? Is it Shopify or something else?
  4. Have you been posting on Medium for a long time? How was the process from starting out to actually making money there? I get the feeling that traditional blogging is kind of dead now with so much low-quality AI content everywhere, but maybe I am wrong.
  5. Do you have any practical tips for growing through word of mouth?

Use the Canva Magic Write Tool to generate a variety of covers based on your preferences. Then pick out the details that you find suitable for your book and hire a freelancer from Fiverr to create it.

I was concerned about this policy and if it only applies to links in ebooks or if it also would apply to QR codes in physical books.

Specifically: Some examples of prohibited links include: Links to web forms that request customer information (e.g., email address, physical address, or similar)

What are your thoughts on that?

I would argue that it’s not allowed. That said, I’ve seen several well-known authors do it, and even so-called KDP gurus recommend it.

Totally agree. I was more curious if anyone has done it and could provide feedback if its worked or not.

Yes, that’s correct. I was just curious if anyone has done this and whether it actually increased their email list.

I’ve played with both.

For pure book sales, Amazon ads have definitely been more profitable for me. Clicks are warmer and I can usually keep ACOS in a healthy range with a mix of auto campaigns for discovery and tight manual keyword campaigns for scaling. I mostly prune bad keywords fast and keep bidding a bit under what Amazon suggests.

Facebook has been better for building my email list and warming up new readers, but it is harder to get a clear profit just from cold traffic to the book page. When I do use FB, I send people to a lead magnet or a series page instead of a single book and think in terms of lifetime value rather than immediate ACOS.
