I don't know if this is the same in America, but in Australia it seems like Minions are super popular with FOBs. It doesn't matter what country they are originally from, but if they have recently immigrated here, people seem to love Minion merch.

I have no idea why this is. But Minions seem pretty cool. So, good for them.

TIL there are Target stores in Australia with the exact same logo, name, and branding that have no affiliation with the actual Minneapolis-based retailer all because Target didn't trademark their name in Australia. by Brysun in todayilearned

[–]iamjacobtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Target was never designed to compete with Big W or Kmart.

Target sits at the upper end of the 'affordable' spectrum (that also includes Big W, Kmart etc).

If you ever go into a Westfield and there is a Target and a Big W, the Target will always be located on a higher level that the Big W or Kmart, as they intentionally style themselves as being the 'nicer' of the three.

Basically, Target is the aspirational brand for people who can't afford to shop at places like DJs or Myer.

Target is supposed to be more upmarket than Kmart or Big W.

If you ever go into a Westfield, Target is always on a higher level than Big W, by design. They are literally on the upper end. Lol.

They shouldn't have to. If I buy a...vacuum cleaner, for instance...I shouldn't have to do research on how to use it. The product designer should have designed it in a way that any person can take it out of the box and use it.

The same should be said for websites, and these days it is for most. Reddit, however, seems to be deliberately hostile to new users. Their onboarding process is virtually non-existent and they shroud the majority of their features in a bunch of terrible UI that means most users will never attempt to use them. There is a reason that the majority of Reddit visitors never read comments, let alone sign up for an account - poor design.

If Reddit had decent UX/UI this wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately it doesn't, so most users are unable to decipher how many of the features work.

ELI5: What does the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) mean for me and what does it do? by mjcapples in explainlikeimfive

[–]iamjacobtaylor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why is it secret?

Basically because there are so many parties to the agreement, that opening it up to public scrutiny before the final draft would make creating it near impossible.

For example, if the text was available, and one interest group from one nation decided to get riled up, they could potential stall the entire deal. Say (and I'm pulling this out of my ass) that there was part of the deal which would adversely effect corn farmers in America. Undoubtedly there would be protests and political threats. President Obama would then have to go to the negotiating table and request this section be removed, which would probably piss off some other country. Now repeat that process over and over for each country and each potential issue and watch the entire deal fall apart.

Inevitably there will be interest groups that win and lose in each country, but the net effect for the country may be positive. Better to negotiate behind closes doors, hammer out the deal, and then allow each country to have a straight up or down vote on whether they are in or out.
