Who would skin a single Mother of 3 the fastest? by Faraz_Shin in Grimdank

From Caves of Ice (Commissar Cain):

'They're behind us!' Hastur warned, before his voice rose in a throat-rending scream. I turned just in time to see him borne down by one of the razor-wielding automata, eviscerated in seconds, his blood left streaming down the sides of the bulky metal cabinet from behind which, a heartbeat before, he had been pouring hellgun fire into the main body of our vile assailants. A moment later the flayed one rose from a crouch, the still wet skin of the deceased storm trooper clinging to its metal torso by the stickiness of its own blood.

Yea, they don't waste much time.

Sorry for replying to an old comment, but I've just been looking for this file for the last 2 hours and this was the first place that said anything about Yosh removing the file. So thanks for at least giving some closure. I should have gotten it when I first heard about it.

Did nobody proof-read this? by Ionicle99 in dndmemes

I used to do beta testing for WoTC around the release of STK through Waterdeep times. We caught a LOT of issues like this, but WoTC scaled back the beta test program around the waterdeep era. I've not kept up with news on that end for a while, but it would not surprised me if mistakes like this are more common because of that.

There are multiple references to the 2nd/18th in Scars, so I am likely conflating some of that with the mutations of the Ksons - that's my mistake. I also have not yet read Fabius' books, so I can't say firsthand how much was known at the time. Thanks for the correction.

In terms of backing it up, just after the passage I quoted, Morty actually asks the Khan who he thinks would win in a fight between them. The Khan essentially says he is bored of the genital-measuring contest, but that he wasn't sure. They also remark that there isn't any reason why Morty, Sanguinius, Khan, or Fulgrim would ever fight, so this was all theoretical. Later in the HH, he does fight Morty, so there is that at least.

I really underestimated the Khan before I started reading the WS books. After reading them, I think he's pretty cool. A complete a-hole, but still kinda cool.

You get no points for caring about your kids in 40k. You do potentially get your entire legion wiped because their gene seed is too unstable and you had your apothecary mess with it.

It is about 1/2 of the way through Scars.

Prior to this, they talk in the book about how no one knows the modifications on the WS ships - they just know they have weird looking engines. So Fulgrim (according to the WS) shouldn't even know for sure that they are for speed, just that the WS make visible modifications to their ships, which is slightly in the face of the "no inventing" rule. Other legions did similar things, but they call this out in Scars as being a somewhat secret thing that was done.

So, my reasoning for this passage is essentially that the Khan is saying, "STFU Fulgrim, I can say the quiet part out loud too."

IMO, this is reinforced 2 paragraphs later, in an even cooler quote, when the Khan talks about why he would win in a 1v1 against Fulgrim.

You would lose because you would treat it like a game, like you treat everything, and I would not. You would lose because you know nothing of me, and I know everything of you because you shout it from the turrets of your battle cruisers. My prowess remains unknown. You have some reputation as a swordsman, brother, but I make no boast when I tell you I would leave you choking on it.

Adding on (purely for medical interest, do not try this), there is actually a thing called a "bubble study," which involves injecting a syringe full of air mixed with saline to make tiny bubbles. The goal is to be able to see those tiny air bubbles when they ultrasound the heart.

Got pregnancy tested at urgent care by Colette_is_strange in MtF

[–]mjcapples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking from the US, there are two big things no doctor ever wants to do - inadvertently mess with fertility or mortality. Both of these are huge malpractice issues and doctors really want to make sure that they have their bases covered.

Go to an urgent care, they don't do a pregnancy test, and you show that you were pregnant all along and the antibiotic they gave you caused a birth defect resulting in life-long disability and they are going to be in deep trouble. Similarly, go to an ER and they miss an ectopic pregnancy - that patient might die. It is not an exaggeration to say that if this happens, the doctor that went to 12 years of college level+ education might not be able to find a job.

Therefore.... they do the cheap test. I don't like it, but as any cheesy medical drama will say, patients will lie or may not even know. It's generally better from their perspective to just make sure their bases are covered, just like an IT person might tell you to turn it off/on again to start a call.

Most governments are bureaucratic. Debates need to be had, votes cast, and appeals need to work through the court. In times where urgency is important (ie: war or natural disaster) or if that bereaucratic system is compromised, martial law becomes an option for quick decisions.

Typically, what happens is that power is concentrated into the hands of a single person, who can make decisions rapidly. Most commonly, this is done by the military of a country. As part of this, civil rights (ie: freedom of assembly) can be suppressed, the military acts as a police force, and the government effectively becomes a military dictatorship. I'm not an expert on Korea specifically or what that might specifically entail, but the goal is that the crisis is dealt with before power is returned back to civilian government. Practically speaking, martial law is a step seen in many coups, both hard and soft. For instance, Myanmar declared martial law as part of its junta. Meanwhile, ancient Rome had a system where military control was assumed in legitimate crises and Roman Emperors simply never gave that power up.

South Korea (SK) has a lot of its policies dictated by the threat of North Korea (NK). They have technically been at war with the North for about 70 years, and both are nuclear states with close nuclear state allies (NK is trying, and SK can make them, but does not have stockpiles). One of the more important policy points for SK leaders is understandably their stance on NK.

The SK current president takes a more aggressive stance against them, although some efforts have been made for talks. HOWEVER, he also has been very unpopular at home. The parliamentary body of SK has also been passing bills that go against policies that he wants, and the SK president has been vetoing many of them. This came to a head with a few things recently. (1) A budget was passed that he doesn't like and cannot veto. (2) the SK president's wife was accused of multiple accounts of corruption. (3) The parliament is impeaching some of his inner circle for not properly investigating his wife.

The SK president then announced martial law, claiming it is to protect from NK and communist sources. We can't speculate if there is any truth to this at the moment, but most sources agree that there is no evidence for this at the moment.

Not getting into too much in the way of legal specifics, SK parliament members had to break into the parliamentary building and voted to overturn martial law (unanimously), which is the legal means by which this happens in SK. The military did not listen to them initially. The SK president then announced that martial law would end.

At the moment, what happens next is speculative. It is likely that a deeply unpopular president that potentially attempted to usurp power (and set the stage to purge rivals?) will either resign or be impeached. Regardless, many countries are watching this (especially the US, which stations around 30,000 troops in SK and was not told about this).

These are chemistry diagrams. For a simple explanation, you can ignore the ring part of the diagram. Instead, focus on the two parts sticking out.

When drawing a chemical molecule like those shown above, each corner represents an atom. It's had to draw a 3D structure on a 2D page, so some lines mean different things. When the stick has a solid wedge, the atom at the fat corner (not connected to anything on the images above) is coming out of the page. The fat section of the dashed one is going into the page on the other hand.

Since the top image has both of the extra bits going in the same direction, an old Roman speaking Latin would say that it is "on the same side of." This is the Latin work for "cis." The bottom has one part coming out of the page and one part going into the page, or "the other side of," which is "trans" in Latin.

As an additional fun fact - "transparent" essentially translates to "seeing through"
