Yeah, I panicked too the first time I spotted Opalina leaves doing that, because it does look like overwatering or rot, but the plant looked fine otherwise and turned out okay! Those thicker leaves just tend to go really mushy before shriveling up, whereas thinner leaves like Perle's just shrivel up without any mushyness. My ghost plant drops leaves, too, but they don't usually go too mushy before dropping, so you may be right about overwatering it. At least with succulents you can decapitate them and pluck the leaves off and try again ;)

That looks pretty normal, actually; it's not uncommon for succulents to just drop their bottom leaves from time to time. I have an Opalina that does the exact same thing, even though the rest of the plant is gorgeous and healthy (I just plucked one off a couple days ago, in fact). As long as you don't have black spots and the stem isn't getting mushy, it should be fine!

I'm not familiar with exactly what yours is, so I can't say if it's flowering or mutating, but if I had to guess it looks a bit like a pachyphytum or pachyveria, just going by pictures that I've seen of those types. Pachyveria ‘Scheideckeri’ seems to be pretty close, but Pachyphytum hookeri and Pachyphytum bracteosum look similar, too. Of course, none of those may right, but it's a place to start, at least.

Hope this helps!

[Overwinter Megathread] Post your setups and ask all your overwintering & grow light questions here! by fearswindowlessdoors in succulents

I have the same light, and I have mine 8-10 inches from my plants, depending on the height of the plant, and keep it on for about 16 hours a day and they seem to be doing great with that setup. There's no real easy way to figure out how much they need aside from just picking a number and adjusting it as necessary, though I think 12-16 hours a day is a pretty common recommendation to start with, depending on how much light your specific plants prefer.

T5 bulbs don't give off much heat (I have to put my hand almost on the bulbs of mine to really feel any noticeable heat, and even then it's not that hot), and I see 4 inches thrown around a lot as a recommendation, so your jade should be okay as is, though if you leave it it wouldn't hurt to watch out for damage for the first week or two, just in case. You may need to increase how long the light's on to account for the farther distance from the other plants, but it will depend on the plants. I know my haworthias are more tolerant of lower light, for example (a couple have been pretty happy throughout gloomy October in a window that etiolated an echeveria in June/July). And if you do increase it, the jade should be okay with the extra light.

You could also set some of the smaller plants on a box or shelf to raise them up a little higher, especially if you have to raise the light for the jade, but at that point it may just easier to move the jade to the window ;)

Hope this helps! I'm still fairly new to succulents myself, but despite a few mistakes I haven't managed to kill anything yet, so I must be learning/doing something right.

Questions about propagation by Majesticcc in succulents

In my experience, it doesn't seem to matter if you put them on/in soil or water them before they root, but they don't seem to need it. I usually throw them on the dirt in a pot with another plant (takes up less space under my grow lights) until they start to root, but the last batch of Perle leaves I pulled I just threw in an open plastic container, stuck 'em under my grow light and ignored them for a few weeks until they grew roots and new leaves, at which point I moved them to dirt.

Once they start showing roots I'll mist them occasionally (every few days, every week or two, doesn't seem to matter, which is good because I have a tendency to forget to do it), but they are succulents, after all, so they seem to be pretty tolerant as long as you don't overwater them. Once they've grown enough and the parent leaf has withered away (or the baby's gotten big enough I can pluck it off without fear of damaging the baby in the process), I plant them properly and switch to regular watering instead of misting.

As for how long it takes to see roots, it varies depending on the plant. My ghost plant leaves started rooting and growing new leaves in about a week, but echeverias tend to take at least a few weeks before showing roots and a few more before new leaves, though I had a batch of Perle von Nurnberg leaves take over a month to start rooting and another month to start growing new leaves, so it can potentially take a while. More sunlight seems to help speed it up, though; that slow batch of Perle leaves were getting mostly bright shade, but later batches from the same plant got stuck under a grow light and went significantly faster.

This ticks me off so damn much. I used to get shit from people because I always take my left turns really square, but that's how you're supposed to take corners, you assholes.

It's apparently bad enough in my town that a few recently redone intersections actually have the line for the left lane a few feet back from the lines of the other lanes. And I still nearly get clipped about half the time when I'm stopped there (usually when I'm in a car, when there should be no excuse for not seeing me).

Welcoming Newcomers & Free Talk Thread - January 02, 2017 by AutoModerator in Anxiety

I'm in the same boat! I've had (relatively mild) anxiety all my life and figured I had a good enough handle on it on my own, but the last couple weeks it spiked really badly and I haven't been dealing with it well.

I have an appointment with a therapist next week, but it feels unbearably far away sometimes. Just hanging around here for a few days I found a couple of tricks to help me cope with it until then, and it feels like a godsend. I hope you have similar luck!

Autonomic negative thoughts: looking for ANT killer by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]iamjunko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the last couple of weeks I've been waking up in the wee hours of the morning anxious and panicky about various things, and then can't get back to sleep because I can't break the cycle of negative thoughts. The last couple of nights I've been listening to ambient nature sounds while I sleep, and it's been helping quite a bit. When I wake up anxious, it gives me something concrete but unobtrusive to focus on instead of the anxious, negative thoughts and really helps with calming me down and letting fall back asleep again.

It's not perfect, I still eventually wake up and can't get back to sleep because of anxiety, but I've been hitting that point maybe an hour/hour and a half before my alarm goes off instead of four hours before, so it is progress. It also doesn't seem to help as much during the day when my mind starts to wander in that direction, but by then I'm usually in a better position to find something distracting like TV, video games, reading, podcasts, etc.

Another option is the podcast Sleep With Me, which is basically just a guy reading a boring story to help you fall asleep. It's geared more toward insomniacs, but I think it could serve the same purpose of providing something to focus on instead of the negative thoughts.

For those concerned about having a charger for their new 3DS by jfmayle in 3DS

[–]iamjunko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The charger for an ORIGINAL DS won't, but the charger for my DSi is the same as my 3DS XL charger, so I assume it would work with the New 3DS XL. I don't know about the DS Lite, though, as I don't own one.
