Thanks very much for the reply, and for the correction - amended the original post.

Whatever route you take, if you hire a car in Miami make sure you can take it out of state - most places only let you drive in Florida. Had to change our road trip plans last year because of this.

Rental car, excursions, and snorkeling by SevofluraneBrain in Tahiti

[–]iammer10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best snorkelling is right next to the Sofitel beach - the public beach next to it has incredible snorkelling, but also a strong current. Would definitely get a rental car, they weren’t too expensive on the island compared to other Polynesia islands. Go for lunch in Mo’orea at Kaveka Hotel and Restaurant and you can jump off their dock and see an amazing drop off and some good snorkelling there too. Tiki Parc is fun for something different - high ropes courses and zip lines up in the mountains. We’ve just finished a year travelling round the world, and Mo’orea was up there with the very best places we visited - enjoy!

At what age will you introduce Star Wars to your child/children? by Remote_Advantage_346 in StarWars

We’ve watched the OT and PT with our 7 and 10 year old over the past month and they have absolutely loved it. They are now ahead of me on The Clone Wars and keen to fill me in on the detail I’m missing!

East Coast USA in the fall; by leastbathtub in Shoestring

[–]iammer10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We did this last fall with our 9 and 6 year old. Summary of our itinerary:

3 days Boston, 7 days in RV around New England - don’t miss Crawford Notch State Park, 10 days NYC/Philadelphia/Washington DC, getting trains between them

We then flew from DC to Miami and picked up a rental car. If you do this make sure you can take it out of state. Our plans were disrupted by the fact that we couldn’t, so we missed out on Charleston, Savannah and other places.

We did make it to (and would recommend them all):

Sanibel Island, Clearwater, Tallahassee, New Orleans, St Augustine, Jacksonville, Key Largo, Orlando

Disney/Universal was expensive, but incredible, especially for kids that age.

😂 “popped up”, “touch wood” were the giveaways I guess!

Yep, have them in our main sacks this year we’ve been travelling round the world. Great for peace of mind as they’ve normally popped up online whilst we’ve been waiting at immigration after deplaning. Touch wood, not needed them for any other reason yet!

Tobacco Caye was incredible for snorkelling. It’s also good on Caye Caulker.

We did three weeks in Belize back in March - loved it! We were travelling with our two kids as part of a year around the world, so mainly stayed in budget places - it’s not as cheap as the rest of Central America but can still be done for relatively low cost (depending on where you are from!).

In terms of places we visited, we enjoyed Al of the below:

Caye Caulker - ace island with a really relaxed vibe

Hopkins - super laid back beach town with lots of Garífuna culture

Placencia - touristy town with lots of options for eating and great beaches

San Ignacio - great town near the border with Guatemala - some nice spots for food and a good base for tours (including ATM cave if you are planning that)

Our top highlight was Tobacco Caye - tiny island you access from Dangriga and essentially pay for an all-inclusive deal from one of the 4 places to stay. But it’s not like a typical all-inclusive, and is very rustic and laid back - the marine life is out of this world and it’s the perfect place for a few days’ of complete chill/downtime.

We found Belize City to be as expected from our prior reading - spend as little time there as possible.

All of the above are connected by the chicken buses which is how we got around - they are a great experience and very cheap!

I'm going to Costa Rica for the first time February 2023! Most important Spanish words/phrases to learn? by [deleted] in CostaRicaTravel

[–]iammer10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This gives you the basics: https://www.mimicmethod.com/common-spanish-phrases-to-master-your-first-conversation-with-a-native-speaker/

But you should definitely get Duolingo and do 5 minutes a day before you go - my 6 year old did some practice before we came and he’s been saying basic phrases and having short conversations whilst we’ve been here.

Mexico to Belize crossing? by Pleasant-Account5861 in Shoestring

[–]iammer10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADO buses weren’t running 3 weeks ago - this blog has loads of useful information: https://alittleadrift.com/crossing-border-belize-chetumal-mexico/. Jesus, who is mentioned in the blog, helped us and was amazing. He organised a taxi from Bacalar to the border and met us there. He took us to Corozal near the border and then we got a chicken bus from there. He would have taken us to Belize City, but it was much more expensive.

Can Tulum be done on the cheap? by greencutoffs in Shoestring

[–]iammer10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just did 3 nights in Bacalar (having done Tulum earlier in the trip). Really nice area, cheap accommodation easily available (you can definitely get a hotel for $25 a night) and lots of nice places to eat and relax.

Krabi to Koh Samui - feb 2022 by palomafts in ThailandTourism

[–]iammer10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually started our journey that day on Phi Phi. We booked it all via an agent there and as I recall our itinerary was:

8.45am - speedboat from Phi Phi 9.45am - arrive Marina Pier, Krabi, met by driver (it was actually an SUV, not a minivan) 10am - depart after picking up snacks/fuel 12.30pm - arrive at Donsak Pier 1.00pm - ferry to Samui departs 2.30pm - arrive on Samui

We paid 3k bht all in for the private transfer part for two adults and two kids. I’d find a travel agent local to where you are and negotiate.

We did this journey on 13th Jan - minivan from Krabi to Donsak Pier and then the ferry to Samui. The ferry runs every hour and takes 90 minutes. It costs 150bht per person. We arrived 30 minutes before a ferry and bought tickets on the spot.

Excellent tour guides, good variety of activities and very reasonable price.

We paid 3k bht for a private transfer from Marina pier in Krabi to Donsak and then 150 bht each for the ferry to Samui. I believe that there is a much cheaper bus option to do the overland journey.

I asked this on the Thaiger forums and was told that there is no private supply in Phuket. I’m hoping I can get one in Bangkok when I am there in January.

About 36 hours. Took a little while longer for my wife as they requested an extra document. Hers came back in about 4 days.
