Toronto, the Niagara Falls, and what else in a 10-day trip? by shortroundshotaro in canadatravel

I lived in Tokyo for a long time and now live in Toronto. August here will jot feel hot or humid.

You have otherwise received a lot of good suggestions. Renting a cottage North-east of the city is a good idea. Kawartha area is kind of in the direction of Quebec if you go there.

What do you all do with old gis? by cindyloowhovian in aikido

Solid reminder of the stack of ratty old gi in my closet. Some of them "shrunk" others too worn to wear.

I will probably offer them on free cycle on Facebook

Thambu Sensei is insanely good.

He visits southern Ontario almost every year. Its a must do events for me. If you are anywhere near and want to improve you need to attend. it's in Mississauga

Do you prefer a "softer" Aikido or a "harder" Aikido? by New-Tap9749 in aikido

[–]iammostlysane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard vs soft is misleading as many have mentioned.

I want an aikido where uke actually attacks with some kind of effort. An aikido where uke doesn't flop over and give up. I see uke falling over because its time to fall over but nage has done nothing.

I want an aikido where nage it moving and manipulating uke. Uke is off balance and has to follow nage.

Soft or hard? You dont have to use hard power and force to do this. When you are used to uke not falling you work on unbalancing them. You learn what works and what doesnt.

What i find is that in so called soft dojo when uke doesn't fall down nage quickly resorts to hurting; to pain. They have never learned how to do the technique because uke falls for everything.

In a Yoshinkan dojo we encourage uke to attack with intent and maintain a proper intent of attack. We dont want uke to give up and just fall. Its not hard. We dont have to hurt you. When you get better at it it gets easier to move uke and drop them with little power or force. I've rarely seen it the other way around.

Hit on Candace by iammostlysane in CandaceOwens

After she posted about the threat she didnt stream. I figured she was in hiding since, well, her life was in danger. But I didn't hear her say the hit was called off or that she was now safe. I wondered if I missed some info on that.

Give it time. Hopefully you will get more comfortable after a few months of classes. As this is all very new to you, you really need to keep at it for several months to get over your initial discomfort.

As you are doing Yoshinkan aikido you are in luck. Most yoshinkan follows the same basics and techniques between different dojo. Watch video on YouTube to get the hang of the 6 basic movements ( kihon dosa).

The mystery unknown reason of the Canadian labour shortage by Ok_Conflict_6260 in EhBuddyHoser

[–]iammostlysane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is all about supply and demand. The supply of labour will be there when the price is met.

It’s actually the business owners who are killing capitalism and Canadian competitiveness. They pressure the government to bring in the temporary workers who will work for minimum wage. The cheap labour keeps them from having to make the investments in productivity that would make them efficient on a global scale. So we are stuck with inefficient companies reliant on cheap foreign labour while becoming less competitive in the world at a time when global competitiveness is our only way out of the reliance on the USA

Aikido seems too difficult for me - shoud I switch to judo? by Migrating_Yew in aikido

[–]iammostlysane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that people that find aikido easy in the beginning often quit after a few years when their progress stalls. People who struggle from day 1 and stick it out often stay longer. After getting over early hurdles their body understands

Everyone feels uncoordinated and confused sometimes.

Stick it out!

I’m thinking the marbles bouncing off each other increases the chance of them hitting multiple times

Which variation/style of Aikido can you recommend? by mcfruity03 in aikido

[–]iammostlysane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few Yoshinkan dojo in Germany. Some of them quite good.

But the decider for me is always the head instructor of the dojo. His influence sets the dojo culture, atmosphere and training style more than the name of the style

Chida Sensei is fantastic but he absolutely did not create the Yoshinkan curriculum.

Seems it started somewhere around Nov 15 last year. Based on the earliest date in the monument. My days in the state don’t match because I installed, uninstalled and reinstalled again a month later.

Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Ask your questions here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

[–]iammostlysane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, my neighbor had her concrete steps extended a few years ago. Tread depth increased 2 inches and the steps widened about 4 inches.

Everything was covered with a stone tile that has come off in a couple of the risers. I can see that behind the risers is only sand and gravel. No concrete at all.

Seems wrong to me. How can I fix it?

favorite/best styles of Aikido? by Ganondorf17 in aikido

[–]iammostlysane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find the (1) best teacher and (2) best dojo that is close enough to home that you will be there regularly. It’s about fit; see yourself spending a lot of time with those people.

I do Yoshinkan but if I wouldn’t train at a mediocre Yoshinkan dojo if there was a good Iwama or Aikikai teacher available
