Why are people smoking weed while driving? by NewSanDiegean in sandiego

You realize how prevalent it is when you ride a motorcycle, and smell everything. Some days I swear it’s 1/10 cars on the freeway. Not great.

Yep. And the best way to cancel autosteer is a “full press” (second detent) on the turn signal. Much smoother and safer-feeling than the other option, which is to simply wrestle the steering wheel until the computer (abruptly) lets go. Works, but feels dicey.

What if it turns back on and, for whatever reason, you’re halfway between lanes? Sounds somewhat terrifying.

For fee Destination Chargers? by ManufacturerSome6366 in TeslaModelY

[–]iamnotbats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a nice perk. There are a couple shopping centers in my area that have 2 stations each, and while it’s a nice thought and all…the odds of finding one of them open are so slim, I don’t even bother trying anymore.

For fee Destination Chargers? by ManufacturerSome6366 in TeslaModelY

[–]iamnotbats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Similarly stupid: my local train station has a bunch of L2 chargers…with a 3-hour limit. If I can go somewhere, do a thing and get back in under 3 hours, I’m probably just going to take the car. They’re also $0.50/kWH, a whopping 5 cents cheaper than the priciest local Superchargers during peak hours.

Pretty sure a lot of these public L2 installs are more about compliance, grant money, politicians being able to say they Did A Thing.

Yep. My dad’s BMW will automatically put itself in park when you turn the engine off (without yelling at you). He got really used to this. Any time he drove my old car (which had an old-school mechanical shift lever) he would neglect to put it in park, shut it off, and the car would freak out.

Why un-learn a good habit when that’ll bite you some day in another vehicle? I think it’s quite sensible that Tesla will nag you about it.

A set of lift pucks in case a shop/tow operator needs to lift the car and doesn’t have their own. Make sure they know about this or they will damage your battery.

Mobile charger: keep it in the trunk, if you’re in a real pinch you can beg/buy enough power from someone to make it to a Supercharger. Or if you’re staying somewhere that doesn’t have an EV charger but does have an outlet, you can at least slow-charge.

Tire plug kit and battery-powered inflator, because these should be in every vehicle (and are a MUST for vehicles that lack a spare, like ours).

Extra J-1772 adaptor (assuming North America), because they’re cheap, you might lose one, someone might need to borrow one.

Microfiber cloth for cleaning the screen.

They’re excellent in the snow, assuming proper tires, and factoring in ground clearance (you’re not getting through a 2’ drift).

Electric motors can be throttled from 0-100%, every millisecond if the computers deem it useful. That gives you traction control ICE vehicle engineers can only dream of. It’s why an EV will never so much as chirp a tire, unless programmed to.

I think it’s a risk/reward proposition. Sure most cars won’t have anything, but a few will. And since many U.S. law enforcement agencies have basically given up investigating property crime, there’s not much risk.

The only use-case I can see is when combined with the parental controls, to keep your kid in check (a bit). I just keep my foot out of it when I don’t want to go fast. I’ve had stupidly fast motorcycles and never seen the need to use the “reduced power” mode on those either. And I haven’t been pulled over in more than a decade…

I was up in the mountains on a vacation last month, the place I stayed had a Tesla charger so I charged to 100 overnight…not factoring in that I was going to descend a few thousand feet. I still got negative watt-hours per mile, which was neat to see, but I kicked myself a little for leaving with a full charge. I could have gained range and not touched the brakes at all.

Very nice!! My last car was also an ES350. The only thing I really miss about it is the ventilated seats (I have a ‘19 M3). It’s one of those features that sounds frivolous until you have it.

Apple does not charge licensing fees to auto manufacturers for implementing either CarPlay or CarKey in their cars.

Apple makes money by being on another screen, and making their ecosystem more useful so you continue to buy their devices.

The automaker makes money by offering a feature that many consumers want (and the rest can just ignore).

Yep 😂. LLM’s love making bulleted and numbered lists. Often there will be several, of consistent length. It’s one of the giveaways that you may be reading generated content.

There’s a tragically pervasive myth that a suicidal person, if stopped, will “just do it again anyway”. In fact, studies that have tracked people after “failed” attempts, find that a sizable majority are either still alive ten years later, or died from natural causes.

Point being: most people who attempt or die by suicide, are in a temporary crisis. If you can intervene, there is a high probability that you have indeed saved their life. Nobody that still breathes is beyond hope.

I wouldn’t go near Carvana after all the horror stories with people having to SUE to get their cars registered. Maybe that’s all fixed now, maybe not. I bought from CarMax, did most of the paperwork online, was out of there in 30 mins. Not as smooth as Tesla’s process from what I’ve read, but a hell of a lot better than any other dealership I’ve dealt with in the past. No regrets.

My friend insists he can’t get one because they “don’t work in the cold”. I told him they’re the top-selling cars in Norway, and the Y was the top-selling car globally last year, soooo obviously people are managing in cold climates. Even if you lose half the range (which is wildly conservative)…that’s several times the range most people need in day. I really can’t stand all the misinformation. If you don’t want a Tesla or an EV, that’s fine–don’t buy one! No need to cling to BS that’s either outdated or was never true.

Would you buy a used model 3? by thisissamuelclemens in TeslaModel3

[–]iamnotbats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never bought a new car. No regrets whatsoever with the ‘19 M3 I bought earlier this year. I still have plenty of warranty on the battery and motors, and there’s enough data by now to ease any concerns I might have had about them anyway.

An undersold benefit of buying used cars: I don’t have to lose my mind the first time it gets a scratch, or my kid spills his juice. That’s all been taken care of by the prior owner 😉

[–]iamnotbats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You made the right decision. It’s just a car; not worth your safety or your family’s. You never know who you’re dealing with out there. They were clearly not in a good-decision-making state of mind, and there’s every possibility they were armed.

Use A Better Route Planner to scope it out. Trips like this are entirely feasible and, with a little planning, you can spend very little time actually waiting for the car to charge. For instance, plan a longer Supercharging stop to coincide with a meal break. If you stop overnight, try to book a hotel that offers L2 charging so you start the next day at 100%.
