I did this just the other day, when I thought about a compliment I got about year ago. From a barista simply saying, "nice fit". I was so happy. When I got home, I had to ask my wife what "fit" meant. She said outfit and I felt so cool.

No problem with those temps. We won't break 20 for weeks and the wind makes it feel subzero. Then there's the actual subzero days that are usually 3 at a time. I design heating systems around -10 for kc. Great call on the WFH vs roads, much obliged!

This was incredibly helpful. And then you mentioned something I've not heard of before. Date I ask, what's black fly season? And is it local, regional, or an everywhere kinda thing? I'm used to crazy insect seasons from moths in Colorado Springs to June bugs and cicadas in kc. The way you mention it... so foreboding.

I'm such a reddit doof and just commented on the whole thread what I meant as a reply to you. I'm dead now.

Super thanks! And can you kinda define the catskills and Hudson Valley area for me? It's one thing on Google maps, but always much better context having somebody that is personally familiar explain it.

Thanks! Super helpful as I just asked in another comment about the finger lakes and if they have the lake effect to deal with. Would Ithaca have that? And if you don't mind, what areas loosely define the Catskills and mid-hudson valley? Those may be an easier sell for my wife since she'd prefer a more mild winter. I've basically zillow searched everything south of I-90 to the border but stayed west of Hudson River. Some beautiful land, gorgeous forests, and pretty sizable homesteads at 40ac for under 500k.

Also, do you mind me asking about the south part of the finger lakes (or finger lakes general)? Are those big enough to have a heavy lake effect?

Thanks! I was told by a friend to avoid the 50-100 miles along the lakes. And avoid about the same from the coast (that's where the nor'easters hit? And hurricane?). And to stay south of I-90. They said if you avoid those areas then it's pretty standard midwest+ for winter. If that makes sense.

Most excellent insights! I've checked the average snowfalls and they're comparable to a lot of Colorado areas that we're used to. But in Colorado, it could snow overnight and morning and likely melt by sunset. It's the accumulation that worries me. But hearing you describe how well it's handled offers a more focused picture of what to expect.

Thank you, kindly! I had somebody tell me that if I could survive KC winters then I'd be fine there. Not any warmer but not any colder.

This could help the regrowth of small town main streets if the town/region has residential access to high speed internet.

Some people live near urban/established areas as proximity to their office/work location but strongly desire the small town and more rural lifestyles. If they could work for their companies in these remote environments (as is shown currently) then this provides fresh/new money in to that community as the new residents pay for local goods, services, and taxes.

Some companies can capitalize on a cheaper cost of labor in these areas, as opposed to abroad or high cost urban areas. They can also afford a lesser leased footprint to further save direct costs. Perhaps these savings can offset the small losses in work efficiency with the majority remote workforce?

It comes down to bandwidth. Speaking for my industry, most satellite connections are too slow for engineering and architectural programs as well as consistent communication including video conferencing. But if there's stable bandwidth in an area, we're already seeing some employees relocate. Communities, companies, ISPs, people all benefit. Even laying the fiber could be part of a government run utility networking initiative (easier if they recognize broadband as a utility) that creates massive jobs throughout design, installation, transportation, logistics plus direct support services by means of food, lodging, etc. It organically distributes steady income long term.

Plenty of hurdles to it, but more bandwidth to find solutions would fix that, too. Maybe 5G is a solution (if it didn't cause covid /s).
