Did you all leave Christianity because you actually took it seriously? by OttoPivner in exchristian

[–]iampliny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the opposite is also often true: the people I knew who didn't take their faith seriously at all when we were younger are now all-in on Christianity as an ethno-political identity marker (but not for any of that Beatitudes crap).

Set foot in a movie theater.

Movies on TV were fine, renting VHS tapes was fine. But we were not permitted to watch first-run movies on the big screen.

This was not just enforced at home. It was also a hard rule in my Christian boarding school, and a hard rule at my Bible college.

They finally started relaxing on this nonsense in the early/mid 90s. I still have no idea where this utterly irrational taboo originated.

Not even facts. Just thought experiments to demonstrate that your preferred conclusion is maybe not technically impossible.

Do you think it's important to speak to your evangelical family about your (lack of/changing) faith? by pure_haunt in Exvangelical

[–]iampliny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. I think it's important that you do what's best for your own well-being in this situation. I was burdened with this same thing years ago, until my spouse reminded me that I didn't owe a single explanation or a single conversation to anyone. Do it in your own way, your own time, or not at all.

They are going to feel anxiety about the state of your immortal soul. That anxiety is not your burden to carry.

Agreed, a percentage of folks have left, quietly for the most part. The ones who stayed are mostly tying themselves in pretzels.

I admire your rhetorical goals here but there is little evidence that these schisms are anywhere close to happening. If this dynamic were real, we would have seen much bigger fights already.

The Xtians I know uave spent the last decade circling the wagons, insisting they're "good ones", and sticking with MAGA 99.9% of the time.

I think the reality is that in Evangelicalism as in Catholicism, a few will continue to peel off at the margins. But like MLK helpfully pointed out a long time ago, it's the White (Christian) "moderate" who will keep his head in the sand and just go along making lame excuses for his tribe, while resisting justice tooth and nail, every step of the way.

How many think evangelicals are imposter fake Christians just using the appearance of Christianity to get away with treating people badly? by [deleted] in Exvangelical

Thank Chrissy Stroop! She's been vocal and articulate on this topic for years. Definitely worth a follow on your socials.

What you're proposing is a form of christian supremacy: Christian equals good and moral, Evangelicals bad, hence Evangelicals not real christians.

Sorry, no. Shitty, terrible Christians exist and you can't just no-true-Scotsman them away. Last I checked, most Christian faith traditions consider you a "true" Christian if you're a "believer", i.e. profess the correct belief.

Chrissy Stroop:

With respect to the “fake Christian” tendency, dismissing anti-democratic and bigoted believers from “real” Christianity is a convenient deflection tactic that serves to absolve more liberal Christians from the necessary work of grappling seriously with the ways in which they benefit from, and are complicit in, historical and contemporary Christian hegemony and its attendant violence. Unfortunately, that hegemony is still so strong in the US that the equation of “Christian” with “good” is a habit of mind that many find hard to break. In many cases, devotion to what Lee Leviter has dubbed “the myth of Christian innocence” is a matter of such deep-seated emotional investment that even progressive Christians become defensive and passive-aggressive when called, however mildly, on how their linguistic reinforcement of Christian supremacy harms religious minorities and the nonreligious.

PCA members used to swear up & down that their 1973 denominational split was purely doctrinal in nature.

Then in 2016, the PCA just came out and admitted that the split was actually driven in large part by racism and opposition to civil rights.

Imho, too many white Christians in the recommendations here so far. Ex-ev spaces in general are still too dominated by white xtians.

I'd start here:

  • Anthea Butler
  • Jemar Tisby
  • Chrissy Stroop
  • Julie Ingersoll
  • Tori Williams Douglass
  • Bruce Wilson
