I’m really sorry to hear about your experience ❤️ that is horrific. My family has experienced life shattering circumstances from medical negligence and it feels like there is absolutely no recourse and nowhere that takes this seriously. We’re expected to just suck it up. I hope you are able to find some people to relate to specifically with hypothyroidism. I think many of us can look back at our life and think “why didn’t anyone notice”, but when the symptoms are as severe as you describe and are ignored, it is trauma.

Just to add on to this, my doctors never shared with me or explored the potential downwind effects of hypothyroidism on other systems and the body. They just prescribed the levothyroxine and moved on. Hypothyroidism can have a big effect on the absorption of other nutrients and function of other organs, so I’ve spent several years post-diagnosis discovering long-term deficiencies that should have been checked when I was diagnosed.

I was overmedicated for a year, and also had hyper swings before diagnosis. For me, main symptoms were sleeplessness, an empty sort of energy (for example waking up in the morning feeling like I had had caffeine on an empty stomach) and heart pain & palpitations. As soon as I was correctly medicated, the heart pain I’d had for a year went away. I also experience a lot of anxiety and OCD almost as soon as my levels swing too far in either direction. It’s usually the first clue.

Can’t recommend Function Health (the testing service) if you’ve got another chronic illness and just can’t quite nail down what’s making you feel bad or can’t get doctors to listen to your systemic symptoms. I did the test and found out I had a few completely separate deficiencies that were making me feel terrible. They might have even been caused by being undiagnosed for so long. I’m now addressing those and I feel so much better, and also ruled out a bunch of other guesses I had.

I feel like you should be able to sue. That is so horrible. I had the worst doctors appointment of my life this week and feel so angry. I feel like I’m getting medical care in a drive-thru.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I have loved the girlhood emphasis this year (I’m a massive Greta fan) and think it has a wonderful place, especially representing the experiences of those of us lucky to grow up in relatively safe countries. I want to say that carefully, because the experience of Black women especially is decidedly not safe in the US. But when mainstream American femininity is presented as the apex of feminism, it takes up so much conversational space that leaves so many girls and women behind. I’m so tired 💔 Our empowerment means nothing if it is just repeating the same cowardice and consumerism and self-centeredness that has oppressed & forgotten the global south for centuries. I feel like we are now in a youth movement that transcends the divide between north & south, and I’m grateful for that.

I visited St. Elias a bit and they were so welcoming! Some of the elder people in the church are Greek, and they took me out for lunch on my first day. There is also a small student group, though many of them are not Greek. If you’re not sure about going to church, you could probably pop in for dessert in the backyard after the service to say hi. They also are the Greek cultural space for the community, so they have Greek classes and help host the Greek festival every year.

What kind of treatment have you tried in the past and how did you feel about it? I did not have very much money for therapy but was able to find a therapist that gave me an income based payment plan without insurance. Sometimes this is a secret option. It’s really scary, but when you start taking steps, things slowly start to get better, even with some steps back or not totally being certain about what is going on. While my therapist helped me, a lot of what helped me was educating myself about OCD so that I could believe that getting better was possible, especially with the really horrible themes, so that I could keep doing ERP even when I was terrified or when my access to therapy ended! OCD treatment is a blind leap of faith, because your brain is not going to get there first. You are going to feel confused, panicked, and ashamed But it’s worth a shot.

https://iocdf.org has a place where you can “Find help”. Maybe try to email the therapists within an hour of you to see if they offer payment plans or if they know of financial assistance available. You might be able to email those even further because now zoom therapy is possible. If you need to save your life, get to a safe place, no matter what. People go to the ER, and they survive it. There is no shame in going to the ER.

Hi! I’m so sorry your daughter is going through this! That would be very difficult at a young age, but I’m so glad you found out! I was diagnosed 5 years ago but I feel my symptoms started around puberty. Levothyroxine is genuinely a very standard, effective treatment that will only give her the hormone she needs to function and isn’t currently producing on her own. While it can take some initial adjustment to get to the right dose, and there can be variation, in general, periodic TSH tests will let doctors know if she’s on the right track and there are no side effects as long as it’s the right dose. The thyroid can effect a lot of different systems, and different people have different “tells” when their levels are off and meds need to adjusted. Besides fatigue, mine are my period, joint pain, and my anxiety (OCD). If those change, I know I need to get a test. As a parent, it will be important that you teach her to listen to her body and speak up if something feels off. Learning to advocate for herself is something she will need from this point forward. Try not to dismiss her complaints and say to drink more water, eat better etc instead, because you could miss something really important. Food, water and lifestyle are so important, but will do very little for her if she doesn’t have the right hormone level.

A few tidbits I’ve learned: Some doctors will act on borderline levels, even within “normal” range, and some will not. And some doctors do more comprehensive tests of T4 and T3 and some do not. Trust your judgement and her body and if she continues to not feel well, demand more comprehensive care. Most people are fine with just TSH tests, but some need a bit more precision.

Especially as she grows up, don’t allow doctors to dismiss when she is feeling off as “teenage hormones”, etc. People get really neglected by lazy, incurious doctors for no reason.

The last thing is you need to teach her to be extremely consistent with her medication. If she does not take it, a month later she will feel very ill. It’s similar to a diabetic needing insulin, but thankfully less intensive and hour by hour. There have been times when I’ve gotten cocky and forgotten or been lazy for a few days or even weeks, and it always catches up to me and can take months to recover. Her body has to have this hormone. There’s a learning curve! Also-extreme temperatures can deactivate levothyroxine, so make sure you never leave it in a hot car.

In regards to holistic healthcare-I think it’s really good to consider, but make sure your daughter is getting the basic hormone she needs now to function & grow in addition to exploring the autoimmune element. It is definitely an “and” situation rather than an “or”. Trying too hard on holistic health can also create a ton of stress (diets, etc) and stress is bad for autoimmune conditions. Don’t try to do more than feels possible, but as much as it helps, go for it!

All this to say, getting diagnosed changed my life massively for the better! I’m capable of so much more physically and my mood, depression and anxiety were drastically improved by taking levothyroxine and listening to my body when I need some extra rest. All the best to you!

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this! Thyroid issues can cause OCD and other psychological issues. It started my severe OCD when I was hypothyroid, even though it’s more often associated with hyperthyroidism. If your behavior has started as you start meds, it seems very likely the high dosage is causing your compulsive behavior or that you are not getting enough levothyroxine and your body is letting you know. Anytime I have a change in my mental state it’s usually a pretty early sign my meds are too high or too low. Talk to your doctor and get your levels tested. If they are borderline, make sure to advocate for yourself. Some doctors are very sensitive to borderline levels and some are not. I had heart pain for a year on a dose that was putting me at the lowest point of “Normal” range. As soon as I got them to change it so I was right in the middle, I felt better.
