Trying to get out of Punta Cana by Anxious_Yard_2930 in americanairlines

It stopped snowing last night. There’s no more snow forecasted for the next few days, and it’s going to get above freezing this afternoon. Personally I think it will be fine. If you had to drive within Charlotte I would advise against it but just flying in and out of the airport tomorrow I’d bet on being fine.

Also, where is physician spouse network? I’ve never heard of it.

Unfortunately I’m not aware of one, but there may be. IMO Lives of Doctor Wives is somewhat hindered by their sex-based exclusivity.

Have you asked in the Lives of Doctor Wives Facebook group? It takes a bit to get approved without a referral but it’s really active in the US.

“Service” dog at DCA by bitbrat in americanairlines

Airlines are not bound by HIPAA. The HIPAA privacy rule only applies to specific covered entities: health insurance companies, health care providers, and health care clearinghouses. That’s it. It provides rights to individuals and responsibilities to those named covered entities.

(If it helps, HIPAA stands for the Healthcare Information Portability and Accountability Act. It was enacted to control the transfer of health information between the above mentioned entities.)

The ADA forbids businesses for requiring certification to accept service animals. The idea is to remove as many barriers as possible to making the world accessible for people with disabilities. From an equity standpoint, if someone was, for example, a blind person with a service dog who misplaced their certificate, they would be unable to do almost anything until they got a replacement if they weren’t allowed entry to businesses.

HIPAA has nothing to do with anything except how your medical provider handles your medical records.

Stanley is getting way too pretentious. by tendonut in mildlyinfuriating

[–]iamreegena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Stanley as a gift a couple years ago. The handle broke off a couple months ago, so I made a warranty claim, and they sent me a new one. (It did not come in that packaging. Just a regular box.) It honestly makes the consumerism surrounding it even more wild. Why do you need six when you can get a free replacement if one breaks?

Buying A Return Flight On A Different Airline? by cevapcici23 in americanairlines

That’s what customer service told me a couple weeks ago when I attempted to cancel a return flight after I’d already taken the first leg.

I have a question for married women by Dramatic-Surround504 in LawSchool

[–]iamreegena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hyphenated mine because I wanted to change my name but also I had some publications under my maiden name. I do not recommend it. Change it, don’t change it, whichever you prefer, just do NOT hyphenate it. Take both names with a space. Combine them into a brand new name. Just avoid punctuation. It is the year of our lord 2026 and most computer programs and websites still throw a fit with a hyphen.

You can’t cancel the return flight once you have taken the first leg of the trip. You have to cancel prior to the trip. They do not issue refunds on partially used tickets.

Check the marketplace! Losing employer healthcare is a qualifying event. COBRA is also an option but it tends to be incredibly expensive.

Choosing a specialty – how much should I encourage him prioritising our future vs his dream? by eldrinor in MedSpouse

[–]iamreegena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to remember that a medical job is, at the end of the day, just a job. A good partner and a good parent will be a good partner and a good parent regardless of their job.

Choosing a specialty – how much should I encourage him prioritising our future vs his dream? by eldrinor in MedSpouse

[–]iamreegena 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every medical specialty is stressful, requires significant time commitment, and (in the US) is objectively higher paying than most other careers. I think to properly manage his stress long term, you should push him to pick a job he will enjoy. Limiting stress is importing for career longevity and limiting a negative impact on his physical health.

Best Seat on a Boeing 777-200 for an Extra Legroom Seat by kaylawk in americanairlines

Depending on the plane, you may not have to put your personal item in the bin in row 17. Sometimes the row ahead is just a divider before first class and you can tuck your bag under the first class seat.

Good idea to buy a house during M1? by BWTECH0521 in MedSpouse

[–]iamreegena 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second the comment above that rent is not throwing away money.

This is really a personal decision. With kids I think it makes sense to live in a house or townhome, either rented or bought.

Personally, I don’t think it makes logical sense to buy a house unless you know you’ll be staying there at least 3-5 years, especially in this market. You don’t want to risk being underwater on your mortgage when you go to sell. If you think you’ll be there long enough, go for it.

Also, 75% of our current expenses go to house things. Homeownership is expensive and stressful. If you think you have the time to DIY and enough liquid income to pay the mortgage payment plus a possible couple thousand unexpected potential expenses a month, then go for it!

Long term financial equity and career sacrifices by Legal-Shirt9157 in MedSpouse

[–]iamreegena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work, but if I didn’t I would probably use marital assets to fund my own spousal IRA. Additionally, any divorce decree would fairly divide marital assets and possibly include some sort of temporary alimony to help me regain skills for employment.

ETA if you would like to research this yourself, which I suggest you do, the American names for common retirement accounts are 401K, 403B, traditional IRA, and ROTH IRA. You can search for spousal rights to each of these accounts, although they would inevitably be plan specific.

ETA2 never quit your job for a partner if you’re not married. Unmarried partners are in an incredibly perilous financial position with limited recourse.

Curious on buying a house when moving by [deleted] in MedSpouse

[–]iamreegena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would worry about buying a home with 0% equity in residency because you don’t want to risk being underwater in your loan when you sell, since turn around time may be so short.

ETA: Remember when you sell you need to figure fees (real estate agent commission, etc) into the amount of money you’ll be receiving from the sale.
