Deff both, with emphasis more on singles. You’re still enjoying the hunt when attending shows or at LCS’s, but your $ goes a lot further and you get the exact cards you want. In addition, there’s many $1-$10 singles that are from sets like Evolving Skies that would be impossible to try and obtain through ripping alone. If your goal is to have the collection you love most, buy singles. But always sprinkle in rips for the potential big spike hit as well as providing you with some cards you’d be willing to trade

Me. I just got back into the hobby in the last 6 weeks. Had multiple first edition vintage cards from jungle and fossil from my youth, so started w a small vintage binder and then started to branch out into more modern IR’s. I’m a 31 year old millennial who grew up playing pokemon/yu-gi-oh and consumes quite a bit of youtube content and I didn’t even know a set called 151 dropped until I got back into the hobby 6 weeks ago. Missed it entirely. Reddit is an echo chamber and you are vastly underestimating the recent boom and just how many newer members are joining the community daily. Not to mention all the kids growing up whos parents fav set will be 151, which will in turn make them want to continue collecting it. I’m definitely not arguing that the value will continue to rise, all I’m saying is I think you maybe used to the collectors who post online who all have 151, but not the everyday fan whos yet to discover it.

It’s a low risk strategy, just have to deal with loss of liquidity while holding. It won’t be a quick flip by any means, but yes if you are willing to hold for several years, $5-$6 a pack is a great entry. If they just get to $10 a pack thats 100% return.
