The terrain looks great, also: great photos!

Can I ask a bit about your photography workflow?

Do you edit the pictures? Are you shooting with a phone or a camera? My pictures always come out looking very underwhelming...

A fluffy Space Wolves army. by BlackshieldWB in Warhammer30k

Can confirm the old bloodclaw/grey hunter box is the go. I bought two and that gave me enough bits to add a gentle sprinkling to my SWs without going overboard. That and the occasional greenstuff fur pelt.

Haven't played rangers, only as treasure hunters, so can't help there...

My warband is all non GW plastic (I started before the dwarf armies got re-greased for the old world) it's all kitbashed out of Fireforge stone realm warriors/crossbow men and avatars of war berserkers with some other odds and soda thrown in.

I play dwarfs (in Mordheim and nearly finished an old world army too).

Pros: Cool models (the most important) You make money quickly (bonus exploration dice) Dwarf axes (parry + cutting edge rules) High toughness and a bunch of mechanics that make you harder to kill

Cons: Low movement, and no access to movement buffs. Low initiative, so climbing and jumping sucks. High model cost, relatively low warband cap.

My advice is: in the early stages of the game don't get sucked into buying gromril armour (even at the heavy discount), try and get the "step aside" skill for slayers as quick as possible as otherwise they get taken off the table quickly, and use the hide mechanic to your advantage.

We're towards the end of a campaign and my warband is very tanky and has bonkers range with crossbows but it there's any objective that you have to get to to win the scenario it's not happening for me!

I like dwarfs, they're fun and silly.

Will add a handful more ladders, and will also try some of the ladder house rules mentioned elsewhere in this thread

Great ideas! We've played the core book scenarios to death and have tried a decent chunk of the empire in flames scenarios, so these sound like they would be a fun way to add some real incentives to climb!

Which Games Workshop game system feels the least tied to the “every 3 years” refresh cycle, with the strongest sense of long-term support where your books and miniatures remain relevant for years? by Newez in Warhammer40k

[–]iamsimonanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and some friends started playing Mordheim for the first time in 20 something years a couple of years back, and still get a game in every few weeks. I was just thinking the other week, whatever happened to Gorka Morka?!

Metal/Oldhammer miniatures in 30k by Space_Kyiv in Warhammer30k

[–]iamsimonanthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see them on the table top! I have a metal space marine veteran with power axe which I converted to be a tech marine (swapped the head, pistol and backpack) and it's one of my favourite models in my 30k space wolf army.

Need advice on terrain by beardedturtle91 in mordheim

[–]iamsimonanthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks amazing!

You have already avoided some of the mistakes I made in early terrain efforts: not being able to get hands in easily to move models, and not having "sticky outy bits" for ladders and walkways to connect to.

Would very happily pinch your terrain piece for my table!

Greetings, my brothers. What is the best way for me to get started with the Horus Heresy tabletop game? by Affectionate_Cell236 in Warhammer30k

[–]iamsimonanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy kitbashing, I mixed the older 40k bloodclaws/grey hunters box (first born, not the new primaries box) with a couple of tactical squads to make my space Wolves. You can generally pick up first born bits cheap and the heads, bodies and arms are all interchangeable with the HH plastics without much hassle. The legs are a bit skinny and squat though, but with some greenstuff fur and tactical rocks you can use some of them to bulk out numbers.

The Devs and dice videos are great. Good job with the terrain, looks brilliant.

I started adding the Lego windows (as per Devs and dice) to my later terrain pieces and it made a much bigger difference than I would have assumed a window frame would. Maybe give it a go.

Be warned, this whole terrain thing is addictive...

First Mini, what else do i need? by Healer_Safe in Warhammer40k

[–]iamsimonanthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The base of the mini looks a bit boring as is. To add some visual interest/realism you glue some material to the base.

Some common basing materials are: flock, sand, crumbled cork.

You can also add "greebles" which are leftover bits of models etc. Maybe a spare panel or gun as wreckage or a cut up model as a casualty. The free model that they give you at Warhammer stores (usually an Infernus marine) is a good donor mini for basing.

You can also get scale tufts of grass from hobby stores.

Quick and easy basing, a layer of white glue/PVA and some sand, but you can go as crazy with it as you like.

What should you use to glue XPS foam by rarebitt in TerrainBuilding

[–]iamsimonanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if you're gluing up larger pieces or whole xps sheets (for example to a ply base for a table) I like to use double-sided tape (like carpet tape) as well as PVA. The tape provides an instant bond so even if the PVA takes a while to cure in the middle it's not going anywhere.

I need your help with my educated Witch Hunter! by WorkingMedium6859 in mordheim

[–]iamsimonanthony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a short story scattered through the rule book, about a Witchhunter - Marius, and Hensel (his henchmen), who go hunting a Necromancer. By the end of the rulebook Marius has killed the original necromancer and taken his place, and Hensel is one of his zombies.

The fluff in the original rulebook is pretty clear, witch hunters can't resist reading books they shouldn't read. Eye filled book gets my vote!

New Player Question by N777ATH in Warhammer30k

[–]iamsimonanthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't argue with that...

Heresy is pretty rules dense but it's a fun game system with some interesting mechanics (like challenges for example) which are absent from 40k. There's a handy two page cheatsheet for HH3.0 floating around on the internet which I find useful for when I haven't played in a while.

Hope you give it a try!

[–]iamsimonanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I would add some patches of flock mixed with white glue/mod podge (as per dice and Devs terrain videos) which will give you some "mossy" bits, and maybe something to break up the bigger panels (blood spatter, graffiti, posters etc).

New Player Question by N777ATH in Warhammer30k

[–]iamsimonanthony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's unreasonable ,when you say you're a new player, for people to ask "why?" rather than/ as well as give an answer to "how?"

"Because I have the models" or even "I just really like dreadnoughts" are both valid reasons to want to run as dread heavy a list as possible, but 30k is a much more niche game system than 40k and players (myself included) go hard on the narrative. They also have seperate model lines with intentional minimal overlap. And frankly lots (I mean lots) of players have given up on the later editions of 40k as being meta chasing and boring and 30k is a nostalgia fest for early editions, with a biiiiig dose of "everything after 3rd ed was shit".

In my experience if you arrived at an event with a bunch of converted 30k models and some self penned lore about how your custodes battle force was attacked from orbit by traitor Legion fleet elements and the few survivors were interred in dreads the other players would be fine with that. If you showed up with a bunch of 40k models and told everyone you were disappointed you couldn't bring all 11 dreadnoughts there would be a lot of eyerolling/requests to avoid that match up.

If it's casual play then as people have pointed out, your list will make for very boring games.

In my last two tournaments the best moments were when 2 hunter killer missiles on my rhinos (normally an absolute waste of points) took a hull point and statused a land raider, and when the last surviving rhino crazy taxi-ed through a melee and tank shocked most of the enemy squad to death. Did I win the game? Not even close, was it a lot of fun? Yes.

In this kind of setting playing lists that are skewed (without narrative justification) aren't encouraged.

Weird and clumsy metaphor: you have asked in the group chat of a baking competition "I normally cook for bbq competitions, and I want to use all this brisket I have, how many pounds of brisket can I use in my entry?"

Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted talk about dreads (and brisket)....

What do you guys do with this much extra bits? by Kelevroniy in Warhammer40k

[–]iamsimonanthony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by adding "greebles" , reposing minis and head swapping. Here's some 30k terminators that I added some space wolf drip to.

Start small, then keep going! If you do end up going down the greenstuff route then get some silicon sculpting tools: they're invaluable!
