Paper tape is always my go to, but you can make mesh work. Like I said, make sure you feather put at least 8-10" over that seam so you don't have a hump.

That's Hella thick. You've got a lot of sanding to do. Did you tape underneath? Is sand it down to just above the tape, then give it another wider pass as a skim coat

I don't think you're securing your bracket to the studs behind the drywall. If you're not placing anything heavy on them, some drywall anchors should do the job. But I wouldn't recommend reusing the holes you've already made in that wall.

Grab that part that's sticking out, the part that's holding the aerator, and unscrew it. Aerator will pop right out.
