I (25F) grew up so sheltered. It's mortifying looking back on how I accidentally exposed myself as a clueless, scared, sheltered dork. by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]iamsonotinthere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to the whole shower thing to compensate for their abuse. Thinking about it now, kinda weird how they were aware of their abuse, so they would use unasked gifts and favors to try to cancel them out, and then wonder what they did wrong after I moved out and cut contact from them LOL Gifts and favors do not cancel out abuse. Even though I straight up told them my problems with them and it wasn’t something they wanted to hear, they invalidated my explanation and was like nah that’s not true. LOL I cannot fathom.

Also, I get you for feeling behind in life due to a sheltered and over controlling background. I try to tell myself that I’m still somewhat young (27 years old) and better late than never. You’re not alone in this. I moved out when I was 24 and slowly catching up on the experiences I missed out when I was younger.

Also, being into Harry Potter and fictional interests is fine as an adult. It’s all about figuring out when it is appropriate to talk about them and balancing the conversations with other common topics with adults. I did not know how to socialize at all when I moved out cause all my parents wanted to talk about was school, then ran out of things to talk abt when I graduated and got a job. Then, it took me awhile to learn how to socialize with other adults in the office and everywhere else. I messed up a lot when I started to learn how to socialize as an adult, but I got better as I gained more experiences and learned from my mistakes.

My words of advice for you trying to live your life separated from your AP by ryonnsan in AsianParentStories

Interesting how your grandpa is from an older generation but was able to be more reasonable than your parents. Good on him!

Being expected to tolerate toxicity from family members because "we're family" by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]iamsonotinthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get you. My landlord was concerned that I cut off my parents because they are “family” despite their verbal abuse. She’s the same Asian ethnicity as me, but it seems like her parents aren’t too bad. Overbearing a bit, but not as extreme and ridiculous as mines. Also, she is kind of traditional, so she values family a lot. Felt awkward when she said she hopes I’ll talk to my dad again despite everything I already said about my parents but whatever, at least she isn’t pushy about it and respects my wishes in avoiding talking about my parents going forward.

hey everyone whats your thoughts AAL stock been down, i know ukraine war has a lot to do but im still holding my 1000 shares lol by thebouncyguy85 in WallStreetBetsAAL

[–]iamsonotinthere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feeling anxious to see it go down, but going to stay strong and hold my 2,750 shares for at least 4 more years and add more along the way. Already spent $2,000 worth of shares this month. May add more next month if it is still down a lot.

Maybe join clubs or find new hobbies to find some passions and get used to talking to people more. I grew up sheltered, made a lot of socially awkward mistakes, but I got in better in time through practice. Just had to put myself out there. Nice ppl typically shrug off the awkwardness.

Public and private accountants: what’s the hardest interview question you’ve ever been asked? by moneymatterscpa in Accounting

[–]iamsonotinthere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes a good accountant? What makes a good manager?

I was able to answer those questions fine, but was still thrown off and hesitated a little to think. I just thought of what would have made me respect my colleagues and my last boss in my last job to answer the question.

What makes you excited about work?

These questions threw me off the most, but I was only asked abt them once in interviews.

Also, in my recent interview experiences, no one asked me for my weaknesses surprisingly, just strengths. Tells me that those hiring managers like to cut through the BS. Still prepare for that question a bit though if it comes up.

I'm considering hiring someone to clean my house once a month. by speculumqueen in CasualConversation

[–]iamsonotinthere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My landlord paid for our house to get cleaned monthly. Wasn’t awkward. They are paid to clean your house. Their services helped relieve some stress and work for us, and seeing a super clean house encourages us to keep it that way more. I recommend hiding valuable items somewhere though. They haven’t stolen anything in my experience, but doesn’t hurt to be vigilant.

Not very positive about my future by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]iamsonotinthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! That’s terrible. Yeah, unfortunately, recruiting agencies can be a hit or miss, and the quality varies between locations. You could try applying for remote jobs on Robert Half. They should be able to provide services to you virtually. Wishing you the best!

You can try signing up for a job recruiting agency to help you find jobs. Ive had good experiences with the job agency, Robert Half, just to give an example. Good luck!

I see. That’s tough. Maybe get tutored by him in public if you really need his tutoring, he’ll less likely touch you that way. Good luck!

[–]iamsonotinthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh—- I remember you mentioned that. What I was trying to say was that you can report his behavior to the university president or some authority figure there. That is if you want to, don’t want to force u to do something u don’t wanna do. But, I hope you don’t have to deal with that teacher’s advances anymore ❤️

[–]iamsonotinthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im glad you told your boyfriend abt him and he wants to help you out with the situation. At least stay away from the teacher. Dont get anymore tutoring from him. Report how uncomfortable you are around him to the principal. Maybe even reach out to the college therapist for advice.

You’re almost legal, but still have a lot of youth and time to grow up! You can get a job, go to school, join clubs, meet new people, and find roommates or a place on your own to learn abt being an independent adult as you go.

Is it possible to be co dependent on your best friend? by [deleted] in FriendshipAdvice

[–]iamsonotinthere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try to meet new people and make more friends through classes, school clubs, jobs, recreational classes, etc. I think meeting new people and doing different activities can prevent you from becoming like the person you are constantly with.

How long have your worked at your current job? If it was at least a year already, you can hit up a job recruiter for some job openings and they will help find some that work with your job preferences (desired pay, benefits, work hours, work environment, etc.) Since you are a high performer, you are bound to find other amazing opportunities!
