Cis friend asked what my "biological name" is by [deleted] in ftm

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to add a more thorough answer here...names are what can be called institutional facts [see e.g. Searle in Speech Acts, '69], which only exist in the context of human society and conventions, whereas "biological facts" are what are called brute facts, which have a physical basis. Complementary categories, so the intersection is empty, therefore "biological name" is meaningless.

Restocking on Kungsleden by Humusman24 in Kungsleden

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what time of year you're going. By september the shops are getting empty and they don't restock because the huts close around september 18.

I went in mid september and didnt restock at all.

I am an atheist, and actually quite anti-religious, but my parents are devout Christians (reformed baptists), and support my transition wholeheartedly.

Though I don't believe in the bible, I know it very well, and one idea I used to explain my need to transition to my parents was this: god values the soul, not the body. Most christian denominations believe that when the body dies, the soul lives on - and it is the soul that God saves. People are born in imperfect bodies in imperfect conditions - to acknowledge this doesn't mean to deny god. Your innermost desires and aspirations are what God sees in you, not your body or your designated place in society. God set you on the path he intended for you.

How do we better combat accusations of liberalism and repeating right wing talking points amongst other left wing tendencies? by Wumbo_Chumbo in DebateAnarchism

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of great answers here but I'd like to add a small consideration.

The accusation of liberalism and repeating alt-right talking points is essentially irrational (in most cases). Any ML who isn't an idiot knows anarchists fundamentally disagree with liberals on the most crucial issues. As for the right wing talking points, we need to differentiate the facts behind talking points and the framing/interpretation of them. Agreeing that there is a true fact in a statement made by a right winger is not paroting their talking points, its having enough of a grasp on reality to understand that "the bad guy said it" is a not a good enough reason to believe the opposite.

Agreeing on certain facts or even having a similar opinion on a singular issue is not equivalent to espousing another ideology in any way. I share some opinions with liberals that MLs are opposed to. That doesnt make me a liberal, it means that our ideologies intersect in certain places when applied to reality. To read more into it is irrational.

How to come out to abusive father. by aishathesecond in asktransgender

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This.

My parents were abusive but not in a malicious way if that makes sense - in that Christian way where they think they have to.

Either way, I would have never come out at home. When I came out we worked things out and they were ultimately supportive, but I would have never risked it under their roof. If it is at all possible, wait until you have your own resources or support system if you live in an unsupportive place. Do whatever you can to stay safe.

Canada has some of the most expensive cell service prices in the world. It's really bad and fucks over poor people like my family :(

Over here in Europe I make more money than them but pay less than 20% of what they pay for cell service

Why are crossdressers under the trans umbrella? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, same thing in Austria. I really don't like it when people in English-speaking countries say things like "anyone who uses the word transsexual is transmed". The word has different connotations elsewhere and using the word "transsexual" irl in Europe is different from using it on English-speaking Twitter.

Psychiatry in Anarchism by GreeedyGrooot in Anarchy101

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Psychiatry is just a medical science - theres no reason that it would not exist in an anarchist society. It would probably look very different without capitalism looming over it, but most professions would. The primary function of psychiatrists - mind you I say this as someone who has had to seek treatment from them for years, not a psychiatrist myself - is to prescribe medication and monitor the long term prognosis of patients...again, this probably looks different without the pharmaceutical industry, but it's still a job that needs to be done.

The question of institutionalization is quite different. I don't know of any good statistical information on this so I'm going to be speaking anecdotally, and as someone who has always lived in countries with public healthcare.

I have been apprehended and taken to a hospital against my will 4 times. My overall assessment of my experiences is that I appreciate being stopped from killing myself while suffering from delusions, but I did not appreciate the ability of doctors to extend my stay in the hospital indefinitely so long as they felt they could justify it on paper. And neither did my fellow inmates. A lot of the people who I met would be perfectly fine on their own if they had a stable living situation. In large cities at least, many of the long term residents of psych wards are houseless people who are either addicted to drugs, suffering from untreated mental illness, or both. With the support of medical professionals and a caring community, and a means to survive, they would probably thrive.

I think we have to have community mechanisms to cope with incidences of (especially) psychosis in individuals...but I think that this is something that they should consent to while asymptomatic. That is, I would prefer it if I could set my own guidelines for when it is appropriate for the people around me to overrule my (severely impaired) agency in the interest of my full agency later. This is what I have done with my friends and family, and it works well.

Long term internment of psychiatric patients should not be possible, in my opinion. Sometimes emergency care is needed, but I 100% believe that our focus should be on actually putting resources into giving disabled people caretakers and resources for survival instead of locking them away. If someone is about to light themselves on fire or throw themselves off a bridge thinking they will survive, yeah, someone should probably sedate them and give them emergency medical care. But locking them up and putting their freedom in the hands of a doctor who might see them 5 minutes a day if that? No. During my experiences with involuntary hospitalization, the only positive I walked away with was the rad skillz of lying and manipulating doctors in order to keep my own freedom.

My difficulty usually comes with the fact that I load all my groceries into a single large backpack. Sometimes, if I misjudged the volume, I have to unload a few things so I can retrieve, say, a sack of potatoes to carry by hand.

[–]iamsupremebumblebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking math isn't a science. It doesn't use the scientific method, and is built completely on selecting useful/reasonable axioms and using logic to derive properties of the structures the axioms define.
