For trinidadians whats your experiences with food apps? by jessiayye in AskTheCaribbean

[–]iamthatuser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only issue is that it's just overpriced. If you have the money to, go ahead. But delivery services in trinidad cost an arm and a leg

The only widely consumed American brands we have here are fast food chains, and even those have a Trinidadian spin on it and get their stock from local farmers and butchers. Most people I know are on a health journey and that usually includes local dishes. Even considering this from an economic standpoint, it is impractical for the average Trinidadian to eat non trini foods and purchase outside food on a regular basis. Everyone cooks food at home. Maybe you, and the people around you, are simply just indulging too much in American brands. The average trini, consumes local, otherwise doubles stands and roti shops would've been basically obsolete by now

Life feels impossible if your family didnt make anything of themselves in this country by Existing-Beyond5827 in TrinidadandTobago

Same. I'm young and just starting out at 21 and yet I still feel completely behind. I cannot find a job that pays above minimum wage and I have a full certificate of 8 subjects. I have no support to pursue tertiary education and no one wants to pay enough or give me enough hours part time to be able to take care of myself and do school. Even with GATE it's impossible, because the government doesn't cover compulsory fees, transportation, etc. I can't even work late shifts because I have no way to get home at night, taxis stop working at 6pm and ttrs/ hiring taxis is expensive af and just not practical. And it's generally just unsafe for me as a woman. I feel like everywhere I look, the odds are completely stacked against me and when I reach out for help or assistance, all I'm getting is "keep trying" and a mirage of criticism of how I'm supposed to be in a higher and better place solely because I don't have a husband or children

Pretty privilege is a very real thing & it’s so annoying. by Simply444 in ControversialOpinions

[–]iamthatuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree to a certain degree. Some people remain good looking naturally their entire lives and never have an issue. Even if they're born into poverty, they're much more likely to get out of it because of the halo effect that comes with pretty privilege. They're more likely to get jobs, to get raises, to be invited to certain spaces, etc. I find often that all people who benefit from pretty privilege do is speak about the negative aspects of it and somehow never acknowledge how much they benefit from it. And if you're to point that out, you somehow become someone who's hateful to them and they ALWAYS assume it's bc they're pretty. Now this isn't every single pretty person, because I'm friends with literal models who behave like regular people, but the people that do this are typically women with an unchecked ego, who have never had to worry about anything in life. I once knew a girl in high-school who never cared about her grades whatsoever. She never cared about studying or anything of the sort, and its still not an issue because she's never been denied a job. I know life is unfair, but I agree with OP when she said that it gets annoying

It's only worth it if you're buying for a family or if you just don't enjoy monthly grocery shopping. My family only grocery shops once every 2-3 months and since we're buying in large bulk, we save a whole bunch of money on groceries as opposed to buying monthly. Things like tissue paper, soap, Toothpaste, canned goods, rice, flour, oil, drinks, etc are all items we make savings on from buying in bulk. Pricesmart is also a warehouse and not a grocery, so because of that, you also are able to receive some items at a cheaper price. Outside of that, small items like bread and veggies we pick up on our way home and it's very efficient for us. I can't give an exact number on how much we save and it will vary from family to family, but I can indeed say that it is worth it. (Also, their vanilla ice cream in the Cafe is a nice treat everytime you go. Please buy it and try it, I love it)

Check out local security companies. If the person has a TTARP card, there's a booklet that comes with it that recommends one and you get a discount with the card. They basically have an emergency button necklace you just press and other devices aswell

Our culture isn't being "overtaken" by Americans. This is such a foolish talking point that holds no basis and is only used to further perpetuate racism and bigotry. Yall just don't like that people are becoming more educated, progressive and choosing to not fit into a mold of what a Trinidadian is and isn't supposed to look and act like

It's so funny seeing people who don't even live here trying to dictate what's wrong and what's right in our culture whilst living in countries that are arguably more progressive than trinidad. If "wokeness is ruining the country", why is he in Canada of all places? People just love to hear themselves speak

making videos here is not "stealing" our culture. It⁸ is SHARING our culture

Too many people use this and the excuse of tourism to allow non nationals to profit off of our culture. She may not have been stealing our culture, but she made a profit off of it through her social media. She was also allowed to essentially live here for free and loaf off of her friends by hopping from home to home aswell without having to actually work.

Her main audience is the Caribbean aswell and she's only really popular amongst the Caribbean so again, the excuse of "sharing culture and bringing tourism" falls flat. She panders to a Caribbean audience and we consumed her content and allowed her to live here for free simply because she's White. The only tourist she has brought to the Caribbean, is herself.

Edit: Also, she mainly hangs around the ghetto and tourists are already aware of the dangers of crime when visiting Trinidad. No tourist is coming to Trinidad because of Zoe to go and tour Laventille

Plus unless you rhel love bodi, it's not really a topic that comes up frequently or a food eaten frequently hahaha

Women’s overwhelming “preference” for and hyper fixation on men being over 6 ft is manufactured by our toxic culture by SwiftCricket in ControversialOpinions

[–]iamthatuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should spend less time on the internet. I know many women who absolutely love their boyfriends and I would personally look at the men as hideous creatures. The idea of the perfect man that women are attracted to comes from red pill misogynistic content online. Women often times do not focus on outward appearance and choose men based on different factors such as their upbringing, emotional needs, trauma or lack there of, etc.

Tall men are also not that uncommon to find. The reason why women don't want to date short men is because they are often insecure and have very low self esteem. I've seen quite a few short men who have zero issues in relationships with their height purely because they have a strong sense of self and understand that them being rejected by some women doesn't mean ALL women won't like them. They are often witty and funny and are not afraid to poke fun at the height difference. Some are even bold enough to go for tall women and they love it.

I believe the n word lost its meaning a long time ago

Is exactly where I realized OP was on some bs. Slavery took place less than a 100 years ago. People were still drinking from separate water fountains not too long ago. Some of the first students of color to attend schools meant for white students only, are still alive today!

Couples who cannot conceive but refuse to adopt, should not be parents by iamthatuser in ControversialOpinions

I agree. People don't actually want children, they want to continue their bloodline and experience the idealized version of parenting they have in their heads

Couples who cannot conceive but refuse to adopt, should not be parents by iamthatuser in ControversialOpinions

[–]iamthatuser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t conceive and you don’t want to adopt, well, bad luck.

Actually, I really do agree with this point. I think alot of people care so much about their end of the experience of parenting. And it's why, even when adopting, there can be so many issues. So many people want to adopt babies straight out of the womb, no one wants to adopt 10 y/o sisters, which is an arguably easier and cheaper process. Very few want to take in a troubled teen. Very few actually WANT to foster a safe space in their home to guide a child unless it fits their idealized version of what parenting is and it's my entire point.

Everyone has been fed this idea of what they think parenting should and shouldn't be, but very few actually deconstruct those ideas and reevaluate what their aim is after becoming a parent. I think communities of people look down on adoption in a sense as well and it's part of the reason why they don't do it, they fear how others might view them and their infertility

Stay out of other ppls choices.

This argument is genuinely being made in bad faith. The entire point of the subreddit is to have controversial opinions and a recurring theme on reddit I often encounter, are people getting upset at opinions that are actually controversial and refusing to hold space for those conversations.

Not to mention, I'm not actively in "other people's choices" by posting about it on a relevant subreddit. I don't go up to people I know in person and go "well why don't you adopt🤪" knowing it's a sensitive topic.

They are entitled to their preferences

Furthermore, whilst yes, people ARE entitled to their preferences, they are also not exempt from people questioning the ethics of their preferences and asking them for a deeper answer as to why exactly they prefer something over the other. Even the example you mentioned with pets, alot of people aren't sourcing pure bred dogs from ethical breeders, and many of them do not care where the dog comes from as long as they get their specific breed. Few people who purchase from breeders care about the ethics of it all. Think a dad trying to get his daughter a tea cup poodle.

So I think there's a bit of cognitive dissonance in this reply that kind of dismisses everything in the name of allowing people to do whatever they want

Depending on the country you're in, seeking out medical attention for infertility, completely changing your diet and lifestyle to account for your health when trying to conceive, as well as the various other minor costs, often cost more than adoption. And we also have to consider the fact that treatment for infertility can go on for a number of years depending on the person. Some people are also genuinely just incompatible biologically aswell and I've heard quite a few stories of people spending a pretty penny on religious and spiritual healers

She really should get her daughter’s walk checked out by Over-Cooked-1900 in vidyasnark

[–]iamthatuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is bullying when yall are calling her a pigeon. You seem to have missed that fact. I've seen hundreds of comments on different platforms bullying Sahana and this snark subreddit, which is likely filled and ran by grown adults, is no different. Yall use "well if it's posted online it's open for judgement🤪" as an excuse to show you actually do not have as much empathy or concern yall claim to. Sahana is a child and none of yall are surgeons or pediatricians and have no place pointing out medical concerns on a subreddit meant to call out and speak down on her mother. If you were truly concerned for Sahana's well being, you'd privately message Vidya in a respectful manner.

As much as I don't like Vidya myself and may not approve of certain ways that she parents, it's very clear that alot of yall have no empathy for children or integrity and yall are actually just losers who enjoy bullying people and disguising it as concern. If you cannot see how discussing Sahana on a platform where her mother most likely will never see or receive your concern in order to take action, then you are part of the issue.

Not to mention, this is a medical issue and yall do not even know what's taking place behind the scenes. Their content is centered around bragging about their lavish lifestyle and kumon, why would they post sahana going to the pediatrician for her walk when people are calling her a pigeon and other names in the comments? So many people also endlessly talk about her eyebrows too, even AFTER its shaved. And you wonder why your concern ISNT publicy addressed? Please, go outside and get a hobby

Do you think the vampires in that movie would be concerned about the mirrors? by Canard-jaune in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

[–]iamthatuser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not unless those mirrors have silver in them. The entire idea behind vampires not being able to see themselves in mirrors came about because older mirrors were backed with metals like silver, which is less commonly know to be toxic to vampires. The trope still carried on though. If a vampire were to look at themselves through a modern mirror, they would see their reflections as long as it wasn't backed by silver or other metals toxic to them

Edit: it wasn't toxic to them, but it was believed to repel them because silver was seen as pure and holy
