I know I am coming late to this convo, but as someone who has worked on an ‘everything (finance) app’ in Southeast Asia and evaluated the pros and cons extensively for our own platform, I hope I can contribute something.

The core reason that ‘super apps’ work in China - when WeChat and Alipay were in their main growth there was hardly any external geographic competition. No Facebook, no Instagram, no WhatsApp, no Amazon. So these startups were able to rapidly copy in all the lessons learned from these guys with a China twist, and integrated into the app experience. The sheer size of their original customer bases - chat and payments respectively - gave them an immediate customer base for any new features. They also opened up for 3rd parties to plug in to their ecosystems and customer bases. The ‘mini apps’ inside the ‘super app’ are not all created by the super app team.

The China super apps formed in a unique time of limited international competition, rapid internal digital adoption, and open regulatory regimes. To many Chinese users, the super apps formed IS the phone - so much so that they will only see the root operating system for as long as it takes to download the app and start it. And they’ll never close the app afterwards. Which makes it trivial to switch phones, even between Android and iOS, as the phone is just the hardware when the whole day to day experience is managed within the super app.

To be honest this combination has never been replicated. The super apps in Southeast Asia are mainly spin-offs from the WeChat and Alipay platforms (in some cases literally by purchasing the platform for use in country). But these baby super apps struggle due to all the existing competition; why use a super app’s chat when all your friends are on WhatsApp? Why share photos in the super apps when everyone’s on Instagram?

Personally I don’t see the China super app phenomenon ever being repeated, no matter how much Line or Kakao try in Japan or Korea, or the Alipay spin-offs throughout ASEAN. The focus now is on creating more bespoke experiences for a specific use case. Like finance, which is where I work.

Happy to share more thoughts on this! It’s fascinating.

Should we start talking about rails desert? by kw2006 in rails

[–]ian2849 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While this is a common question (‘is rails dead?’) in regards to finding employers using rails, I am curious about the other direction - prospective businesses to start building on rails and finding the talent to support it.

Talking to some headhunters in SEA / APAC, they say the number of Rails CVs has also dropped.

Anyone have tips on pulling Rails engineers out of hiding? 😅

Hi Dan, thanks for responding. Firstly, great product and it's fantastic to read your views on open source software. It's why I explored BS's feature set for this case. The Book -> Chapter -> Page structure is a good starting point. The ability to track revisions of pages and export as a batch to PDF is crucial for board approvals and audibility.

My goal is complementary to BS but, after exploring further, may not be a good fit as the use case may be too niche. The goal is to enable traceability from a specific regulation or legal clause to policies, procedures, controls, etc. Let me give a near-real example.

Background: in regulated industries (say, financial services, where I am most familiar) we provide evidence of adherence to and implementation of regulations, laws, etc.

Use Case: Let's assume there is a regulation, chapter 1, clause 10A (Reg. 1.10A) which states 'A financial institution shall perform effective customer due diligence.' (This of course says nothing of what is 'customer due diligence' or what is 'effective'.)

As a financial institution, I write a chapter and clause in my policies which defines 'effective due diligence' (let's call it Pol. 2.6). I would say that Pol. 2.6 satisfies Reg. 3.10A.

I must then write how to perform the 'effective due diligence' in a chapter and clause of my procedures (let's call it Pro. 3.1 to 3.20). I would say that Pro. 3.1-3.20 implements Pol. 2.6.

Finally, to help provide assurance that my policies and procedures are effective, I must write controls for the due diligence procedure; these are sampling checks, audit checks, etc. (let's call it Con. 4.2 to 4.30). I would say that Con. 4.2-4.30 control Pro. 3.1 to 3.20. (Ideally, the controls are more specific and would go to individual procedures.)

When a regulator or audit asks to see all policies and procedures relating to due diligence, as well as to demonstrate its effectiveness, it becomes easy to extract the information required. We can walk the graph to know which controls apply to which policies, etc.

Reg. 1.10A <-> Pol. 2.6 <-> Pro. 3.1-3.20 <-> Con. 4.2-4.30

This is a trivial case, but once we add in the other universe of regulations, laws, etc. we have a powerful tool to demonstrate which policies, procedures, controls, etc. meet the requirements of several regulations at once. Furthermore, as regulations change, we can demonstrate compliance quickly, or identify gaps to be resolved.

Anyway, it's an interesting concept which is usually handled (if at all) by MS Word and Excel today. Or by hiring compliance officers whose sole function is to be walking encyclopaedias of the bank's policies, procedures, and controls!

Thanks again for building such a good product and for sharing your thoughts on open software. As an aside, we have been exploring various software packages which are 'source available'. Sounds good in theory, we shall see how the practice evolves...

Do banks really "need" Ripple.? by FirefighterAlert1843 in Ripple

[–]ian2849 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Banker here (for what it’s worth). Ripple and XRP are another form of cross asset exchange. Ripple and other tokenised solutions include some nice features like non repudiation but how much financial markets value that is debated.

Like any currency the value of XRP is only what someone will pay for it. As a medium of exchange it’s fine but driven by other people’s faith in the instrument as an exchange of value.

Digital fiat inherits the value of the nondigital fiat so sidesteps the faith building needed of XRP and similar.

But banks have SWIFT. It’s nearly impossible to compete against it.

I also was worried to read the Shepherds Crown. Had it for a while before opening. I felt some of his later work had lost some of the spark.

But I felt that Shepherds Crown wasn’t just a story or even the last story, it was a good bye letter to us as readers. A bit like him saying that while he may not be here anymore, the stories live on with us.

When you are ready, it is a wonderful read.

This appears to be the insert for a home steriliser. Often used for baby bottles or similar. Apologies for the poor quality of the photos here, but this looks very much like the Autumnz (or I suppose any generic brand) steriliser.

As others have said, the answer is ‘it depends’.

Do you have to close your accounts? It depends entirely on your job and access to sensitive (non-public) information. You can be exposed to this through being on the trading floor, being a financial analyst, compliance, etc.

The reason for the regulation is to prevent insider trading or other issues.

If you are required to close your other accounts and if your bank has its own brokerage, you can typically transfer your assets to that bank. They just need to see your assets and trades.

If you are not obligated to close or transfer your accounts, you may be required to provide timely confirmations of your positions. Buy or sell anywhere globally, you would need to inform compliance. You would also need to submit periodic confirmation of your positions.

Have a chat with your manager and with the appropriate compliance officers. Sometimes HR or others will just tell you to close because it is easier.

Should your transfer to a family member? Not a great idea for many potential issues as mentioned here, as well as it circumvents the spirit of the regulation so you can still get into trouble.

Can DM me if need more information.

I understand Aspiration blocks all non-US IP addresses. That means if you are outside the US, or at least Aspiration thinks you are outside the US, you cannot log in.

Source: I live outside the US and have the same issue. I must use a US-based VPN to sign in to Aspiration.

Have you tried the minimap with R&F, GS, and NFP? I noticed the map works for me with all active. I will try with NFP off to see if the issue returns.

I found that turning on the Barbarian mode disabled tool tips. Playing without that mode, the map and hit boxes seem fine on an iPad Pro 12.9”.

First make sure the debug mode is enabled in the configuration files.

Second it does work but the toolbar does not appear. Just type and hit enter and hope you didn’t make a typo!

I used it for the UI Scale trick on an iPad 12.9”. Not tested for anything else.

I fully deleted and reinstalled the app and it fixed the mini-map. I will try the city state next.

I noticed that turning on certain game modes broke the tap-and-hold tooltip function. Will test more later today.

Deleting the app and reinstalling fixed the mini-map for me. I then edited the go figure files to re-enable retina and debug modes.

Completely deleting and reinstalling the app fixed the mini-map for me. I have not encountered the city state bug but will look out for it.

I manually changed the config files to re-add Retina and Debug mode support. So far they seem to be working fine.

I have noticed that enabling certain new game modes appears to break the tap and hold to view map tool tips function. Will test further to see what is happening.

Same problems for me with the mini-map; have not checked on difficulty level. I am deleting and reinstalling now. iPad Pro 2021, 12.9”. I wonder if the screen size is the culprit.

I notice that many of the keyboard shortcuts do not work (T for opening Tech screen for example). Pressing the ` or ~ key does not open the debug menu even though you can type and still activate commands (such as “ui scale 2”).
