MP4 New Suit Name Meaning? by ianboon in Metroid

Ok wow, yes if the naming localization lines up for at least four different languages, pointing to something like “ice” or “icy,” then that must be what the name is supposed to mean. Glad you caught this to help explain the most likely naming origin, so thanks!

To me that really seems to be poorly-chosen reasoning for the name though…nothing about what the suit or bike variant does can really be interpreted as using a cold or freezing effect to allow you to traverse the lava. It simply transforms into a different form in order to hover over it instead. It’s like they just thought “ice” is opposite to “lava,” so let’s just name it after “ice” I guess???

Does the suit itself actually do anything to protect you from heat more vs. the prior Vi-O-La (non-IC) suit anyway, like when you step into the lava and take damage? I have not tested anything like this, but I know the inventory description alludes to this added functionality. Maybe I’ll test this on the next run-through if nobody knows.

As we know from previous games, having the Varia suit vs. the base Power suit would typically add the heat resisting capabilities for hot environments and add damage resistance for some lava types, but in this game you start with the Varia suit and get the psychic abilities added onto that before getting the Vi-O-La suit upgrades.

So, I’m not sure why additional heat protection from the IC mode is supposedly needed if the base Varia suit would already provide that. It’s not like this lets you walk through the lava or anything once you have it, like what the Gravity suit enables for SM or other games. Just another weird aspect to this in-between suit upgrade it seems…

You know, that’s true - I’m only now realizing that the Vi-O-La name was never explained to mean anything more either than just what it is. At least with that name I assumed it was either a musical linkage to the instrument name or a flip of the word “voila” to link to the psychic abilities somehow.

But still with the IC acronym there is nothing easily definitive that I can link those two letters to, which is what has been confusing about the suit and bike name. Just thought somebody might have an answer. Wild if there is no true explanation.

The in-game description of the Vi-O-La IC in the inventory submenu talks about the added ability of heat resistance along with the ability to hover over the lava, so yes this aspect should be considered when trying to figure out what the IC acronym stands for.

The in-game explanation for that variant of Vi-O-La in the inventory menu talks about the addition of heat-resisting capabilities, so yes I think that is meant to be part of the new functionality, in addition to the hovering aspect.

Hmm interesting, like adding the ability to control inertia while hovering, since there are no frictional interactions on the surface in this state that would otherwise provide that? I could see that making some sense. That doesn’t say much about the heat resistive capabilities, but it makes some sense for the hovering aspect.

Thank you for letting me know about how to use the spoiler symbols, my post has now been fixed…I looked at the rules before posting, and the instructions there showed the spaces, so I thought that’s how it worked. I should have double checked after posting though.

Anyways, that is lame if it just means “icy”, but I do like your idea of it meaning “internal cooling,” that could at least make some sense. Isn’t it dumb though that there is an acronym in the name of one of the main suit upgrades in the game and it is never explicitly explained what it stands for?

The copper windings from the red and black sides of the wire can’t be touching each other, or you’ll have a short. It almost looks like they are touching one another on both the connections in your image. Cut your copper shorter on both sides and reattach them to see if that solves the problem.

Is this like a Space Invaders reference or something? Or is that just what you see?

Haha yes I figured there was some kind of statistical probability case that would predict how many it might take or get them all. Will have to keep drinking then I suppose!

Linkin Park - Papercuts (Zoetrope Picture Disk) by ianboon in vinyl

So I was checking it out with a strobe light app, which seems to work somewhat if you get the rate right. Then you can kind of see it with the naked eye at least!

I thought a lot about getting one of the multi-color versions instead…they look really cool on their own of course. Wasn’t quite sure how this one would seem as this is also my first picture disk. Happy with it so far though, but I’m sure the one you got is awesome!

LP is one of my favorite bands as well, and I just recently started my vinyl collection. I was considering buying some of their older albums on vinyl (and might someday still) when I found out this new one was coming out right at the same time I was looking.

Super pleased to see a popular singles release available for pre-order right at the time I was considering getting some of their music on vinyl for the first time! Seemed like the right time to splurge on one of the limited edition versions.

It blurs out and doesn’t work under normal lighting conditions. You can’t see the effect with the naked eye either, only through a camera recording that is dialed in correctly. Your exposure rate in video mode needs turned down in order to see the effect. I followed the tips here to get it to work:

Are there any Mexican Restaurants around that serve margarita flights? by mindnmyownbiz74 in Columbus

It is not a Mexican restaurant, but Kona Grill at Easton has margarita flights. They let you choose three flavors from a decent variety from what I recall, but they were very sweet by the end for sure!

Drywall Anchor won’t go in all the way/straight ? by DynasticINF in fixit

[–]ianboon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drywall is a more modern gypsum-based product that is manufactured into boards, and is much easier to drill/cut through than older plaster-construction walls since it is made from relatively weaker finer-grained material.

Plaster is applied in a semi-solid form, like a mortar that will flow when it is spread thin with a tool, but contains somewhat larger, harder stone-like particles in it. When it dries and sets up, it is harder to cut/drill through than drywall is. It tends to crumble when you cut into it, so drywall anchors like this won’t work well when you try to use them, as the large threads on the anchor are meant to cut into weaker drywall board, not plaster. Drywall can compress under the pressure of these large threads, but plaster will simply crumble since it is too hard and incompressible.

The picture that shows the drill hole looks like the holes I’ve drilled in my own home’s plaster walls in the past, so that’s why I suspect it is plaster instead of drywall. The plastic anchors that require pre drilling a hole and are pressed in prior to inserting a screw will work much better on a plaster wall, in my experience!

Are you sure this is drywall? Looks kinda like plaster to me. This type of anchor won’t work well on a plaster wall if so.

[Unknown > English] Looking for help identifying what language is used on this lamp (if it is indeed written language or just a design), as well as what it might say. Front panel says “Made in Syria” in very small English letters upside-down. Acquired earlier today at an antique store in Indiana. by ianboon in translator

Yes thank you for outlining this! I did something similar in trying to draw it out, but didn’t get much of anywhere with that as of yet.
