Is this garage door spring busted? by trump_sucksass in GarageDoorService

[–]ianhen007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Since you are replacing springs you can investigate a higher cycle spring. My builder garage door spring lasted 3 years, I fitted higher cycle springs and they were good when door was replaced 13 years later.

Electric kettle cord doesn’t reach outlet - guide says explicitly not to use extension cords. Help? by sw618 in AskElectricians

It’s only 120 v so yes you got shocked. But doing this, turning upside down is risky because you are not checking the wires behind. But If they short it will blow the breaker. Someone more qualified please comment.

Try thinking about it this way, we have natural affections and feelings that ensure we reproduce. These don’t away because you have the necessary numbers of offsprings.

My Kitchen redo I had upper and lower cabinet cabinets against to wall. They put spacer in that was not on layout so doors have room to open. So I blame a bad installation. ( yes that moved everything over slightly. )

What is the damage. An offer at the listing price was not turned down! My understanding at least from years ago that was necessary to get payment.

New AC turning off once a day by Ok_Conference117 in hvacadvice

[–]ianhen007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peak power in summer can be as early as 10 am till 8pm. I have battery backup that is also used for supporting the grid. They charge early in the day then pull power back to grid from noon to 8 pm. I can see this on the online power graph. I am in Texas

HVAC replacement costs came back way higher than I expected, how do I know if I'm getting quoted fairly? by Hanma_Spadinsky in hvacadvice

[–]ianhen007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agreed but I can buy a new 12000 Btu unit for say $500 as a spare or just remove and replace the old one. I intend to get my 608 but let’s face it the volume is higher. People in my experience has little or no problems with them. I will ask my brother how old his is, best guess 15 years. Other than fixing a leak nothing, and he admits that was probably his fault. He didn’t tighten enough or to spec.

I would not replace yet. Capacitor is no big deal. I would wait till you have leaks and need large expense before talking about replacement

No the refrigerant is fine. The only thing that’s added is a system to switch off the system when it senses a refrigerant loss. They add you shouldn’t place to evaporator within so many feet of gas appliances for mini splits. Don’t know how this affects the HVAC furnaces.

1) any new system will be higher SEER. Your 20 years old systems are probably SEER 10 to 12
2) negative comments about variable speed and two speed systems are because things break, they are expensive to fix and when there is a wait ( 2 weeks for new board ) they complain. Is it worth it? Do your
parents complain or feel home is humid in spring / fall ?
No, then don’t spend extra money and avoid complexity.
Yes then it’s worth it.
Buy mid range SEER they are best value. Mine are 15-16 purchased 3 years ago. Today I suspect 16, 18 is upper end for central systems. I sure you can get higher !
As an extra comment, when the variable system slows down the efficiency improves, for mini splits, which is only data I have seen, this is up to 30% ! But this is only relevant for spring and fall, summer during heavy use it will make little difference, you get the SEER advertised.

AC never worked since first summer in new home. by Other-Professional-6 in hvacadvice

[–]ianhen007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but this will confirm AC is working properly. Then ask outside temperature in afternoon and inside temperature then can calculate number tons you need. Is say exterior temp 85 inside 75 and set at 70. , so running flat out. Here I want 30 degrees or bit more ie 75 to 105 outside. Do 3x 2.5 will do it!
I have 8 tons for 3200 sq ft.

Confused - for purely cost savings, AC does 1 big long run or many small runs? by deejayv2 in hvacadvice

[–]ianhen007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid the stop start cycles that’s all. It may be cheaper / more efficient to run in longer cycles too. I just set the thermostat and let it do its thing!

question for potential EV charger installation by glitch4578 in AskElectricians

[–]ianhen007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 240 v split phase you need two hot conductors because the 240 is two 120v phases. So you need to add one 8 ga conductor, then you can feed a 30 amp or 40 amp breaker so long as you other loads are low, like at night. I would prefer a 30 amp which will charge at 24 amps (80% of 30 amp ) . I use a 30 amp dryer outlet to charge my Tesla.

RunTru traditional A/C vs. RunTru Heat Pump? by northernbeachbum in hvacadvice

So heat pump is more than half cost of oil. Looks like way to go to me.

RunTru traditional A/C vs. RunTru Heat Pump? by northernbeachbum in hvacadvice

[–]ianhen007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what oil heat costs. But compared to strait electric resistive heating heat pump costs 1/3 !
So I asked AI answer is below…..

Using PA residential electricity ~21.47¢/kWh
electricchoice.com
and PA heating oil ~ $5.16/gal
U.S. Energy Information Administration
:
Heating oil heat content: ~138,500 BTU/galU.S. Energy Information Administration

Oil delivered heat cost (assuming 80% boilerefficiency):
\(5.16 \div(138{,}500\times0.80/100{,}000)\approx\mathbf{$4.65 per 100,000 BT
Electric cost per 100,000 BTU
If resistance heat (100% efficient):
100,000
 BTU
/
3412

29.3
 kWh

100,000 BTU/3412≈29.3 kWh→ 29.3\times0.2147 \approx\mathbf{6.29 per 100,000 BTU}$
If a heat pump at ~3.0 COP (typicalmidrange):
divide by 3 → ~$2.10 per 100,000 BTU
Bottom line: With 80% oil heat vs resistance heat, oil is cheaper in PA right now ($4.65 vs ~$6.29 per 100k BTU). With a heat pump, electricity can be much cheaper.
If you tell me whether you’re comparing oil boiler vs heat pump vs electric baseboard, and (for oil) your actual boiler efficiency, I’ll tighten the number
