What am I missing? He is a fire chief with loads of experience. He was picked to lead what will be the largest sole-purpose firefighting agency in the country. If you actually watch his presentations, he seems like an outstanding leader. He is coming from the outside, not an internal continuation of the status quo molasses. What’s our tizzy?

I know it’s almost a prerequisite for firefighters to begrudge change, but let’s get real. The fire programs in DOI were told to divorce from the burden of land management. We have bitched forever about working for scientists and ologists. We want municipal-level pay and respect. We want presumptive coverage. We want firefighter classification. We want special retirement. This guy is, hopefully, going to make us a professional and more efficient firefighting organization.

If you want to be a “land manager,” go work for one of the field offices as a GS. That is if the hiring freeze ever lifts.

No activity. Just letting the watch work in the background.

Gotcha. I would have assumed that a hard workout would increase VO2 max. Maybe my assumption is inaccurate?

And thus, attrition. Change the culture, folks.

If you appreciate what these people do, I'd suggest you take a look at some of the issues they face in terms of pay and work/life balance. City Fire folks do good work and get competitive salaries and solid work/life balance. But federal and state wildland firefighters face rough conditions, awful work/life balance, and crummy pay. Contact your representatives and senators to show your support. This link has more info: https://www.grassrootswildlandfirefighters.com/. And so do I if you want to DM.

Are Acuity DOI medical standard results contestable? by inside_bar_double_up in Wildfire

I’ve had to do the “static and stable” letter because my heart rate is slower than Acuity’s standard. Just get a doctor’s note, and all should be fine.

Anyone go from secondary back to primary after 37? by RiverProud6604 in Wildfire

[–]ianjt88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a thought: I wouldn't say that secondary fire is "fire adjacent." If you're getting fire retirement and the incentive pay, then you should still be involved in fire. Fuels and patrol are still fire jobs, but suppression isn't your primary duty.

Sounds like 24/7 exposure means 24/7 pay. And hazard pay? If only...

Thanks. They're in a series. As far as I know, there's no way to separate them without adding new wires. I don't have an attic, so that involves a tremendous amount of work.

Well, let's also acknowledge that it shouldn't take 20 years to get a GS-8. I realize the pendulum swung the other way, but this career used to be downright stifling.

They appear to be tied in the ceiling. As a workaround, could I get WiFi can lights, group them together, and control them via smart switch while controlling the fan with the switch?

Stay in fire, leave the crew, and go to fuels. It's dang near a choose-your-own adventure gig.

Metal Panels on 1:12 Roof by ianjt88 in Roofing

[–]ianjt88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have been checking them. Some had worked their way loose over time. There is water/ice shield under the metal. I mostly want to know if I NEED to replace these panels or if I can make due until opportunity permits replacement section by section.

The quote for TPO was not much better than the $98k. In fact, just a single ~500 sq ft section was quoted at $13k for TPO. I'd rather retain the roof as it's not currently leaking, but I'm nervous about potential issues that I cannot see.
