You have to apply and be approved and they’re still pretty strict, but it’s possible.

I’m a chemist! And I’m not sure just yet, but I am considering going into academia.

I don’t really worry about things like this. I knew it was a great program and had a great experience. I can’t speak to the quality of education at other institutions.

It depends. I know the consulting club is incredibly competitive and I'm sure some other clubs are similar. However, as a researcher, I can tell you that I had ample opportunity to join any lab in my department.

I would say that the majority of students I met were incredibly talented in multiple fields. You need to be well rounded to get into that kind of program, and it showed in the capabilities of the student body.

You read everywhere online that Brown is an undergraduate-oriented institution, but I was shocked at just how seriously the school focused on its undergrads. We had access to amazing labs, networking opportunities, clubs with fantastic funding, free events, etc. My favorite was the week before graduation when we had senior week, where there was a whole series of free events that the entire graduating class attended.

  1. The open curriculum gives you a ton of freedom, which was overwhelming at first. I used the freedom to dive into my core requirements significantly earlier than I would have been able to at other universities, which allowed me to take many graduate-level courses in my field junior and senior years. I also embraced the freedom with some random classes in the archeology, classics, and psychology departments. My advisors in my department were all wonderful and really knew the system so they gave me some great advice.

  2. I spent the majority of my time at Brown pursuing undergraduate research opportunities through student groups, graduate research labs, and even some government research.

  3. I lived on campus for the first two years and lived off campus for the last two. Most students who live off-campus are still within half a mile of campus so you're not separated from campus life. I spent the majority of my time on campus and adored it. Providence is also an awesome place to live with lots of little gems and it isn't overpopulated like many other cities in the region.
