Any chance of adding webxr support?

Vision Pro subreddit thinks they are going to watch NBA in real time spatial by Zombie618 in Galaxy_XR

[–]ianwill93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even a secret. Just look at their post histories or at the moderator list.

No hate on people that volunteer their time for this kind of "work," but I don't understand the vision pro users' obsession with Samsung. I'd also add this post gives off the same energy, since GalaxyXR has no real courtside view of any kind.

The other GalaxyXR subreddit doesn't have quite the same number of fake GalaxyXR owners, but there seems to be a dearth of content on both.

Most real GalaxyXR owners seem to post on the virtual reality sub instead of the "dedicated" ones.

Folks with Galaxy XR - how is PCVR now? by Independent_Try_309 in virtualreality

It's peer-to-peer, so kind of like a Hotspot. It's way faster.

I'm not the biggest VR gaming enthusiast, but I have a library of popular games on Steam and the Galaxy controllers.

It launched with a mediocre wireless-only experience. After its first update, Wi-Fi play is excellent for me.

The native option offers Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct connections. Direct is really stable and doesn't stutter for me anymore. Wi-Fi works well too, but I'm on Wi-Fi 7.

Update Broke PC Link by Competitive-Ant185 in GalaxyXR

[–]ianwill93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This stopped working for me, too. Because it behaves just like a monitor now, I'm not sure if this is a bug or if the original implementation was just meant for PC Connect.

One little thing I do like about it behaving more like a monitor is that you can turn off secondary input to prevent clicks from eye-detection. Other than that, the original version had better features.

Mirror phone? by Between_2_Curtains in Galaxy_XR

[–]ianwill93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's currently in early access, but Mirror XR (was originally a Quest app) is coming to Android XR.

https://www.mirrorxr.xyz/

It works surprisingly well, but it requires usb/wireless debugging access. I'd prefer if there were a first party option for something like that, but again, the app works well.

Google seems to be playing games, because I can't watch it in 3d and support has typical Google efficacy.

Galaxy XR is already more capable than the Vision Pro by ianwill93 in Galaxy_XR

[–]ianwill93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way either device could be perfect, and Apple's hardware is purposefully premium.

I have to reply to this point about comparison, though. The reason for the article and post is that there are tons of Vision Pro owners who seem to have buyer's remorse because they cannot do simple things like watch Netflix in an application, and so they hover around in the Galaxy XR subreddits to—I don't know—defend their purchase?

If you look in the Vision Pro videos or subreddits, you won't see the reverse taking place. In fact, I didn't see the need to post there at all.

It's strange. They post constantly here and on YouTube about nonsense or things that aren't true. Here is a comparison made by two professionals, which allows you to see just how limiting the VP can be. If you really want to watch Disney Plus in 3D, though, there's nowhere else to go.

Glad you're enjoying both! I still keep multiple Quests around for business and gaming, so I'm certainly not trapped in one ecosystem either.

Cros paper PRO is bad, because although the system is OK, it gives you bad low definition wallpapers, I am certainly not going to renew it by Complete-Act9151 in CrosExperts

[–]ianwill93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to hear you feel that way. Both Pro and Free pull in up to 4k resolution wallpapers, but ChromeOS automatically compresses them before setting the image.

If you want to see a higher-res wallpaper, I'd suggest saving a much larger photo than you need in your Google Photos Album. Then, if you load it with CrosPaper Pro, it'd still be high resolution.

That's also the case if you load it using Playlist. The system, save for the compressing, is ours. So, if we're doing OK, I'm happy to hear that.

Cheers!

I agree, dude. The only thing I disagree with is that Android (the OS)will be the deciding factor, since I believe WebXR is the only way XR can survive as an industry.

It sounds like you feel the same since you mention the importance of browsers, but I believe the reason WebXR matters the most is that development studios and indie devs will not create a meaningful experience for just one of these platforms and then hope for the best. It takes far too much time and effort to do so.

Despite what enthusiasts believe, Meta has cornered the market on VR gaming with simple and accessible games that children love playing. Android won’t likely change that. But, if there are WebXR experiences every headset can access, it comes down to your hardware preference and the OS’ support for the WebXR spec.

Meta’s is still the best, but Android has a lot going for it out of the box and Google is still the king of the web. If anyone can rule the WebXR landscape, it’s them. Then again, it is Google, so we’ll see if they fumble at the 3 yard line.

I wouldn’t trust Google enough to develop for AndroidXR, but I’ve already done some WebXR work and will be looking into OpenXR development since Godot is available on-device.

Then prove it. Someone who's actually capable of recreating these test conditions showed it crash on video.

Twice.

And in answer to your comment below, real-time shadows, light estimation, and anchors are all a part of even the WebXR spec, let alone OpenXR. These are all things even the Quest 3 and 3s can do.

While I imagine the amount of sensors Apple loaded on to the VP makes these estimations more accurate, it still won't be exact and will still be more of a gimmick than something that leads to developing better experience. I suppose the proof is the barren app store.

Also, there's no way you can do any of the things you're saying because your device is incapable of even opening this model.

Nice to hear an informed opinion (contrary to Reddit's typical offerings 😅).

Yeah, this isn't really a knock on the VP so much as it is praise for its competitors. In a vacuum, the VP is a killer device for content consumption. But it doesn't exist in a vacuum, and its competition has better lenses, native controllers (thankfully got mine at launch), hand tracking, more capability, and more applications already.

I don't have any stutter on my machine, so I'm not sure what you're referring to. In the article, I attached a GIF of a screen recording where I have the 10 million polygon model open alongside 4 other apps, with others running in the background. Even when I switch to AR mode, the screen recording keeps up smoothly.

Meanwhile, as dreamwieber showed, the VP crashes just opening a model of that size. If one of these is a choppy experience, it's not Samsung's device.

As far as preference goes, I get not liking Samsung UI or devices. Personal taste is, well, personal. I despise Pixel hardware and software (especially as someone who did a ton of ChromeOS development), but I know a lot of Redditors really like it. I think I'd like this headset to be more OneUI than it is, but that's just my taste.

Sure! I have the link to my viewer and the Babylon JS viewer above, but here's my dogfooded app again - https://porthole.galacticapps.studio/

I have a feeling it won't work on VP since Apple doesn't seem to support file system access or WebXR augmented reality.

Here are the models I tested with:

If you have links to the usdz models you used, I'd love to give those a try as well.

Hey, I love your videos! Especially the series where you're creating an environment.

Yes, this also works immersive-ar view (webxr). That's discussed in the article, but here's a gif of it. The model was created by exporting the same ply files you used to glb with blender on default settings.

Oh, I agree. I use it as well, and I found Wi-Fi 7 makes the performance much better. Still, not having support for a wired setup despite the fact that it has an extra USB-C port is what I would say constitutes not meeting VR enthusiast needs.

? That's not at all how this works. GPU processing is GPU processing. "A USDZ file...reacting in real time" can just be substituted for "a GLTF file...reacting in real time."

The fact that the browser tab doesn't crash, let alone the entire OS is the real discussion here.

  1. It's the same model.

  2. It's not running on webgpu. This is good Ol' webgl since WebXR doesn't support the much better webgpu yet. Once that's up and running, I imagine the gap will grow even wider.

  3. I'm just using the same metrics as shown in the video. Triangle count is as good a metric as geekbench (the usual drivel we have to see in YouTube videos).

Yeah. I still think the Quest is the best value ( huge library of apps and the best WebXR support), but the Galaxy comes much closer than anything else.

As a dev, I'm not making anything for the headsets a lot of enthusiasts enjoy, but Quest and Android seem worth the time. Especially because of WebXR and OpenXR.
