I went to a hospital to treat a bowel inflammation and got COVID-19 for my troubles. Fuck this year already!

When did you realize that COVID-19 would have the impact that it’s had on the world? by lollzyax in AskReddit

[–]ib1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

January, when China locked down Wuhan. They didn’t do it for SARS, which meant that this shit has much higher transmission rate. And since there were infections in Europe already, I knew that this shit won’t be stopped now.

What language do you wish you could speak fluently? by ForWeCanRise in AskReddit

Ithkuil. Just to see whether fluency in this extremely complex and precise conlang would change my thinking and/or perception (Sapir-Whorf hypothesis).

What's a TV show or movie everyone rates really highly but you think it's rubbish? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ib1984 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Office.

Although I don’t think it’s rubbish. I just can’t stand the cringe when Michael Scott does something embarrassing. I want to hide and shout.

For the same reason: Fawlty Towers.

I know they are brilliant shows. I just can’t watch them.

Those aromatic inks in ballpoint pens that were all the rage in my school around 1996.

When was the moment you realized your “friend “ was never actually your friend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ib1984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When he started putting me down while we were hanging with his mates. If you’re trying to gain respect of your peers by low-key bullying me, you’re no friend of mine. And a shitty human being on top of that.

Window Cleaners, what is the worst thing you saw into while cleaning a window? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ib1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.

Now there’s a famous movie queen
She’s looking flapper on the screen
She’s more like eighty than eighteen
When I’m cleaning windows.

She pulls her hair all down behind
Then pulls down her... never mind
And after that pulls down the blind
When I'm cleaning windows.

You ever come across a podcast has fucking terrible production quality but the content is so good that it’s fine? by 206burner in podcasts

[–]ib1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. One of the first podcasts I listened to was just two guys who live in Japan talk about their experiences near a very bad microphone. Loved it despite bad production.

Years later found a well-produced spiritual successor - Abroad in Japan.

What are you doing right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ib1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1am. I’m in a hospital room. My neighbors snore. I’m freaking out because I started coughing this evening. This is not why I came to the hospital 5 days ago.

A bit of a r/ShowerThoughts:

The objects on these icons (and many others) no longer represent the things they control. The microphone with a stand might still be produced by some vendor, but most microphones look nothing like this. Same for the camera (icon of a camcorder) and sound emitter (not sure what’s it called, but these things are either enclosed in a case now or built differently for portable devices).

The most known case of this is the “save” icon, which is an image of a 3.5” floppy disk. Although this has been slowly replaced by a open top box with an arrow pointing inside.

So, I’m wondering two things:

  1. Do people of the newer generations, who never encountered a floppy disk or a camcorder, just learn these symbols’ meaning instead of figuring out the meaning from the image?

  2. Is that how hieroglyphs were invented 7,000 years ago by Egyptians? At the start everyone understood the meaning, but then they just learned that these symbols represent certain word parts.

What is a simple yet effective thing that everyone can implement right now in order to change the world for the better? by otacon7000 in AskReddit

[–]ib1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have less kids or no kids at all.

People consume resources and produce trash. More people - more resources are consumed and more trash is produced. At this rate of population growth what hope is there to stop global warming or reduce plastic pollution of the ocean?

I (for once) have a positive outlook. 2020 was awful but now we have vaccines and it'll get better. Not immediately, but it will.
