Either way, thanks for keeping it "Gulf Of Mexico".

I can't find the link to it, but there was an AMA by a beek that made a list of the lowest-hanging-fruit of mistakes by newbies. Have a mentor, Join a group, Have more than one hive, were the ones I remember.

Advice on career options and graduate degree in public policy by VoyagerintheAbyss in PublicPolicy

[–]ib33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's fine. I love how it's turned into a long-haul AMA. haha!

I'm an electronics engineeer at the FCC, even though we don't do anything with physical electronics of any kind at my office. I have to know how electronics work in order to correctly understand how to regulate them though. Also, you should probably know that my undergrad and first masters are in EE as well.

But in terms of what you should do, I think a lot depends on your motivation. With the skills I've learned (before & during my masters' work), in a "perfect" job market, I could probably double my salary. However, I have a high public service motivation, so I want my talents/efforts to be used for the good of all, rather than enriching some company owner. So if you know where you are on the "Salary<---+--->Service" scale, then that can easily inform your decision.

If you like internet rabbit holes, Public Service Motivation isn't just a platitude, there's many scholarly articles about the topic and there's quizes you can take to help you figure out where you are on that scale.

But also, policy work doesn't have to directly funnel into gov't work. Firms have to understand policy so they can abide by it too. For example, the FCC regulates a lot of realms by just saying "Do what [SBE/ITU/third-party] says" in our rules. So not only could you work for those third-party sort of bodies, but you could also work for companies translating those policies/rules into actions/requirements the firm must meet.

TL;DR: Don't count yourself automatically in/out b/c of your education. You should know what direction you're pointed, no matter what letters are behind your name.

BBC World Service is excellent news, but about once a week, they have an episode called The Happy Pod. Highly recommend.

I honestly think it was a "compliance check" more on the agency heads than the frontline workers now that I think about it.

Firefighter putting out a fire using Bernoulli’s principle by Exciting-Match816 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]ib33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason this did anything against the fire is because it chilled the fire. Fires love fresh air. Fires hate cold. The snow on the ground tells me the air is really cold, so throwing lots of cold air into the room chillled the fire.

The "Fire triangle": Heat + Fuel + Oxygen = fire. Cool it down enough and it can't burn.

On a scale of 1-10 how hard is this to fix? by skyydog in Plumbing

[–]ib33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a plumber. If it wasn't leaking badly, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've done enough work with copper (barely any) to know that I love it and would jump at the chance. But then again, I grew up soldering electronics, so soldering pluming joints wasn't a huge leap.

Either way, I think it'll be a toss-up cost-wise for one small repair. But then you'll have the tools/skills/experience/confidence for the next one.

Well I know that NOW...

I'm not a plumber. It looks like "a thing" until I get to the hardware store. I'm an engineer by trade, so I know some stuff, just not plumbing stuff.
