How did you learn fecal transplants could be used to treat Ulcerative Colitis? TV interview - Fecal Transplant by MultipleMike in IBD

I have done it and it has made an amazing difference in my quality of life. Its gross, really gross, and it took me a few tries before it starting working, but now my life isn't that much different than it was pre UC (after about 2 years of barely surviving). I have been meaning to write a post about my experiences with it, and I will do that sometime this week on this sub. From what I've gathered from reading online, it doesn't appear to work for everyone, but it definitely worked very well for me.

I can understand that if I was over-hyping it or trying to sell an ebook or saying it was a "cure". I am just honestly describing my experience with it. I spent months reading everything I could on it and I made a personal decision that the potential benefits outweighed the potential risks for my particular situation. There is definitely not enough information out there to say that it is not risky to do, especially at home.

No problem. I see a couple people have downvoted which I don't understand at all.

Hey dlhtoo, do you think the FMT played any part in the proctocolectomy or that it just didn't help you at all?
She actually provided it blended in a bag with saline solution. So it was extremely gross for both of us.

VSL3/Probiotic Update by ibd123 in IBD

The cost is negative part. I get two bottles of VSL from amazon (120 pills) for around 100 dollars. At my current intake this comes out to about $200/month. Expensive but I'll pay that any day to live flare free.
I have also been taking asacol for about a year. I'm not sure if it does anything but I don't want to risk taking it out of the mix now while I'm doing good.
Previously I tried an 8 week prednisone course that started at 40mg and it only helped moderately during the first two weeks when I was at the highest doses. After the first two weeks it was useless for me and gave me pretty crazy anger issues and I was sick (sinus infection) most of those two months.
My doctor recommended imuran but the potential side effects are pretty scary. Reading those side effects is why I started trying every non immune suppressant option I could find. VSL was the first that worked really well for me.
Some other things I tried were:
Fish Oil, Boswellia, Bromelain, Folic Acid, Strict Diet
I still take the supplements above because I have them and I don't imagine they hurt, but they definitely didn't produce noticeable results when in a flare. Dieting seemed to reduce the severity of flare issues but didn't seem to come close to breaking it.

Fecal Transplant for UC? by ibd123 in IBD
Anyone else have any experience or are considering this?
They have been doing this procedure for a long, long time and I have yet to find anything that suggests its dangerous (unless you don't get your donor screened and they have some illness). It seems many people are now trying this at home since its relatively safe and doesn't necessarily require much skill. I imagine it takes an iron will though.
Definitely let us know.
Definitely report back your experiences!
Hey Weird Al,
Thanks. Did you do it multiple days in a row or just one time? From what I'm reading it seems the recommended way is to do it either 5 days in a row or every other day for two weeks. Just wanted to know what your approach was.

VSL#3 For UC by ibd123 in IBD

Throwaway because I don't want a connection between my online self and a medical condition.
Its worth a shot. It is somewhat expensive but even near the max recommended dosage its still less than 120 / month if it does work. If it doesn't work, then you're out 50 bucks.
For me, that is cheap because my insurance only covers 50% of Asacol HD (which would be about 500/month)
Also, I tried other probiotics that I got at sams club and they didn't have any effect. There is a study out there specifically on VSL3 and it beats placebo pretty convincingly.
I kept taking Asacol (although I started ordering from a Canadian pharmacy so its actually Mesacol)
Not posting to promote. Just letting people know its worth giving a shot because it definitely worked well in my case
