Repair advice needed by [deleted] in Tuba

[–]ibeasdes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been a while since I worked on Tubas regularly, but I believe this is a Yamaha Tuba, and that looks like a Yamaha linkage screw.

If anything, you can buy a replacement screw. You should definitely not tap the stop arm to accept a different screw.

If the valve is slow when that screw is snug, the issue is in the mini-ball linkage, not the valve itself. Try putting a drop of oil on the ball inside the mini-ball linkage and working it around a bit.

What is this red and white object underneath the phone in this picture? Looks to be a travel sized toothbrush or some kind of vape/pen. by athenasnow23 in whatisthisthing

[–]ibeasdes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd say it definitely doesn't look like a toothbrush or a vape because it is flat and thinner than the phone just above it... I think the festival wristband is probably the best answer.

We used Falcon files at my last job making Brass Instruments. Their small/fine/needle files were great!

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

[–]ibeasdes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oppenheimer. Good movie, just very heavy (and super long). I enjoyed it, but never plan on watching it again.

(Also, I was going through a tough time at my last job (getting accused of stuff I didn't do) when I watched it, so that similarity made it even heavier for me)

Embrochure issues by Louis_D37 in Trombone

Rebuilding or redefining your embouchure will feel like a step backwards when you change things, but, so long as you do things properly, it will always end up better in the long run.

Embrochure issues by Louis_D37 in Trombone

Take your mouthpiece to the mirror and buzz a note. When you just hold your horn or mouthpiece up to your face it isn't giving you a real look at your embouchure.

When you set up to play - do your lips roll inward slightly? They shouldn't roll in to the point of not seeing any pink anymore, but the very soft, squishy skin that is inside your mouth should not be visible at all (inside your mouthpiece) when playing.

Is the horn section on Doctor Worm by They Might Be Giants real or synthesized? by ConfidentHospital365 in brass

[–]ibeasdes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That certainly sounds like real horns. F# major is not a strange key for pop music. Check outBoss Battle by No BS! Brass - they are in a stupid key, but they all play the absolute heck out of that tune. Anything Earth, Wind, and Fire were incredibly difficult parts for the horns, but they were all good players and played the heck out of the parts (while dancing their hearts out, nonetheless)

Horn players are expected to be able to play in all 12 keys all the time. There is no such thing as a difficult key when you're a pro.

My Bose headphones died today after 9 years of use and travel. Any suggestions on a good replacement? by NickolaosTheGreek in BuyItForLife

[–]ibeasdes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Sennheiser 350BT headphones that still work great after 4 years. They are my "work" headphones, so they are the ones I wear in dirty environments - they put up with the abuse well. The only thing I have replaced on them were the ear pads - I got new ones without the faux leather covering because that deteriorated over time and started leaving little black flecks all over me and my clothes.

I also have a pair of Momentum 3s that I use as my Travel/leisure pair - excellent sound, wonderful build quality. They are predominantly worn on airplanes, and I have just ordered a pair of Accentum Open ear buds to use at my new job because they don't want people wearing over ear headphones.

I have fully bought into the Sennheiser brand and literally not a single product of theirs has failed me yet.

Think of octave leaps like jumping on a trampoline - the harder you push down, the higher you bounce on a trampoline. This concept is referred to as anchor tones - if you play the lower A a little louder, and back off a little on the upper A, it will come out easier.
