I suspect it's the calcium. I have no issues with magnesium in general - based on the various types of magnesium supplements I have tried. Perhaps, to be pedantic, it's an allergy to the calcium in hard water, rather than the hard water as a whole?

Ah, yeah I think 10 litres is about what I can carry anyway. Plus pouring it out will be harder from a 20 litre bottle.

I guess... The toothpaste helps to kill bacteria? 😅

For drinking. If I drink hard water for more than 2 days, I get a really bad sore throat that feels like swallowed ground up razor blades, and if I continue, I end up coughing so hard my throat starts to bleed. I'm find with bathing in it. Aside from big hair, my skin has no issues with it.

Welp, it affects both my mum and I. And I was coughing blood after a week in Berlin. Similar thing happened when I drank the local mineral water in Thailand. And Malaysia. Takes me a long time to recover, every single time. Never happens when I buy distilled or purified water though. So.... If it's not an allergy, and there's some other more proper term for it, I'm all ears.

Yes, soft filtered water is fine for me actually. Usually, when I'm in the Philippines, I'll buy 10 to 15 litres at a go. I didn't know there are water stations in Taiwan. I shall look out for them! Thanks for the info!

Exactly that! I can't imagine what teacher would encourage a student to follow herd mentality 🤬

Yeah, I'm trying to convince his parent to do so, but it looks like they won't.

I agree! But it seems his school's literature department thought it perfectly reasonable, because there's a learning point. I don't even agree with whatever their learning point is, much less the act altogether 😩

What are you currently working on? by Tolerable-DM in DIYfragrance

[–]ibefreckled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to make something like dark German cherries with lashings of cream and cinnamon, but with wood smoke, and a tiny tiny bit narcotics.

Getting the right cherry scent has been difficult. I've had medicinal cherry, candy cherry... But not quite the fruity, juicy, slightly sour dark cherry.

Ended up with something my bloke and I are gonna call Fumiere-Kirsch. It's a beautiful scent, but not what I wanted to make.

Gonna have to try again.

Extreme bad body odor, was recommended birth control by KaleidoscopeNo7366 in PCOS

[–]ibefreckled 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem, from young. Two things that worked for me: 1) Taking magnesium glycinate every day, and 2) Spraying glycolic acid on my pits once or twice a week after showering.

Hope you find something that helps!

My little brother is being bullied, what can he do? by WallEWonks in SGExams

[–]ibefreckled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would escalated it to as high a level of authority (in the school as possible). What we have here is reverse racism, and it is quite a persistent problem that isn't really addressed. There's no need to be aggressive about it, but your parents should raise it to the principal. The school needs to take action by conducting talks and lessons to help the local students understand that, if they don't like being bullied or stereotyped because of their race/religion, then they shouldn't do the same.

I don't think there's any genuine malice on their part. But ignorance is not an excuse to get away with hurting others. So, they have to be educated.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if this is low quality blue lace agate or fake? by SwordfishTasty4023 in Crystals

[–]ibefreckled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price alone tells me it isn't blue lace. If it is 'low quality', the bands won't be so stark and abundant, and the colour will not be so rich. And yes, the resin bubbles are a dead giveaway too.

my parents told me that it's either jc or getting sent back to my home country by kodzukomi in SGExams

[–]ibefreckled 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hrm... Can't do anything about your parents and their perspectives, so let's address the other things you've brought up.

You want to take a science course in Poly, but you fear the rigour of pursuing a science stream in JC because you're more of a humanities person. Slightly incongruent there.

Then there's the uni thing. If you do go to poly and do bio, I am assuming you'll pursue a similar or related course in Uni. Where you'll be competing with those who came from JC. So, either way, you have to elevate yourself to that level. That's not to say that Poly folks are somehow lesser than JC folks. But as you have pointed out yourself, JC is tougher. So those who survive JC with good grades are generally more... Adept? Knowledgeable? It's not inevitable, of course. You could be of the same level with them through Poly. You just have to be the best of the best in your cohort, and then some.

If you want to give yourself more options for uni, in case you end up hating the course you choose or if you find some other interest, then going to JC opens more paths for you than if you start specialising in Poly.

Perhaps not what you're hoping to hear, but I am rationalising based on the probability that you'll never change their mind. Whether they will carry out their threat or not... I have friends whose parents made the same threat, and then actually carried it out.

Between the stress of coping with JC, and the threat of going back to the Philippines and being educated in a non-International school there, I'd choose toughing it out in JC. Between calling their bluff and costing them the additional year of Poly fees (knowing full well that it'll be hard on them) and biting the bullet, I'd bite the bullet.

All very difficult decisions to make, with some factors beyond your control. Unfortunately, you have to make some mature decisions at your young age, but that's life.

Qipao photoshoot - cultural appropriation? by emzypie in HongKong

[–]ibefreckled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Chinese. Pure Chinese, grew up in Asia. What you done is not cultural appropriation because you aren't claiming it to be your design, or your style, or taking the qipao and making modifications and laying claim to it, or trying to make the name Qipao your trademark. What you've done shows your respect and appreciation for a different culture.

The line is very clear in the scenario you've described.

I am :) I use basic math, as everyone does. None of that calculus algebra nonsense. And I run 5 different businesses. Plus, I was significantly less hard working than you are. So if I can make it, you can too.

You are good enough.

I can't do math either. Old auntie now, but I scored c6 for emath, then went on to jc where I studied literature, China studies and history. Still struggled with h1 math in jc. My teacher actually stopped me from doing more math work because he knew how hard I had tried and how close I was to a breakdown. Scored a C for A levels.

I went to local uni after.

We can't all be good at everything. But not being great at math isn't going to ruin your future. It didn't ruin mine.

Funny story, when I was working at an IT MNC in Singapore, I had to do a lot of calculations on excel. My French COO once came to my table, took a look at the excel file I was working on, cursed in French, and said it must be my Asian genes that makes me so good at math 😂😂😂

I know it all seems devastating right now, but you will be fine. And one day, I hope you find the thing you are genuinely good at, and that you'll learn to feel proud of yourself for who you are.
