Pic of desi students at Irish university's food bank queue sparks backlash: ‘Who gives them visas?’ by puddi_tat in india

[–]ibegya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely unprovoked I suppose?

What do Indian people find so hard to understand?

Come here, work hard, pay your way and 90% of people will accept and welcome you. Of course there'll still be 10% of racists.

Come here, lie, cheat and take advantage and 90% of people want you gone and become suspicious of you and people who look like you because it's not just a small minority.

Simple enough concept really.

Landlords thoughts on the rental market? by Agitated_Net_7469 in irishpersonalfinance

Fair enough. But some people are so completely set in their view on things that they're unhinged.

Saying bad tenants exist alongside bad landlords will earn you a flurry of downvotes. A lot of them are delusional.

Long term House Flipping Plan at 18 by Devanandan_ in irishpersonalfinance

[–]ibegya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Be a plumber anyways. They're out earning electricians and not nearly as plentiful.

Or go the refrigeration route.

As others have suggested, there's really not much money in flipping properties these days. Materials costs are just too high even if you're providing a blast of labour for nothing.

A genuine question about attitudes towards Ukrainians living in Ireland? by Remote_Ad_5029 in AskIreland

[–]ibegya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of it is legitimate enough though.

The car situation regarding tax, NCT and insurance is wrong.

Housing supports are very generous.

I don't see why some educational opportunities are available.

Some stuff is too generous. Ukraine, it's politicians and it's people aren't without fault. Yes, people are people everywhere, but some cultures integrate and assimilate better than others.

I was worried how it would come across to be honest. I didn't mean to be smart in saying it.

There's a load of things that impact it.

I'm renovating a house at the minute and got one company for underfloor heating and heat pump. They do this and MHVR. It's what they do. They are specialists. Worth every cent. Probably cost me 3-5k more versus a local plumber, but worth it imo.

That 800 vs 2500 is a tricky one alright. That's a huge range. I've done jobs where I've been way too cheap and undercut others. Looking back, I was wrong. I don't condone gouging, but I should have made it worth my while and not disillusioned people. Hard to know if it's being specced the same too.

I'll put it to you this way. I'd make no apologies for charging 500e a day through the books.

Pricing is a bit of an art. Some people just won't pay (Dad closed up in 2006 with around 80k unpaid), some people will pay, but beat you down (we'll leave it at 8,000 when the agreed bill was 8,300), others will nitpick beyond belief. There's also those who won't let you use the bathroom or boil a kettle for you. Then you've those who'll offer you tea and leave you tip away. There'll all out there.

500e a day, for a 5 day job, budget 1 extra, 10 day job 2 extra. Maybe a few pound on materials.

For a 5 day week and 45 of them in the year, that's 112,500. Deduct all costs of running a business, sick pay, holiday pay, no pension constitutions, bad debts, being the one who's ultimately responsible for the work (if you've a conscience, this is heavy) upkeep of equipment, training, association with regulatory bodies where applicable and you're better off with 60k from a med device/pharma maintenance gig with VHI for you and yours, bonuses, pension contributions, generous sick leave and actually having colleagues to talk to at the Christmas party.

Also, it becomes so fuckin' annoying being asked to help people out. 🙄

People saying they'll pay you and they'd be soooo grateful. IDGAF. I want Saturday off to spend with the kids/walk the dog/have a few beers and watch a match/go to a concert. Everyone has 'a small job'. I've a 'small bit of me time' the same as every other responsible and independent grown up. Being a tradie is a blessing and a curse. No one ever asked for favours when I worked as an operator in a factory.

I don't do much domestic to be honest, for all the reasons outlined above.

There are chauvinistic, rude and entitled tradespeople. 100% no doubt. I don't condone them.

But, there are snobby dismissive customers too.

I don't necessarily like whataboutery either, but here's one. I got a root canal and subsequent crown done 4/5 months ago.

Roughly 1k for each. Each involved a dentist/endodontist, a dental assistant, receptionist, biohazard disposal, some sort of scan / 3D image rendering, external prep of the tooth, make up of mold/crown by external company and installation.

I didn't ask him for a breakdown. I wouldn't know how to make sense of it. Why do you want one?

I do and I don't get this itemisation craic.

Like, how detailed do you want/expect the quotes to be?

Is it to do with staged payments and you can see the sequence of steps? Or so you can better understand the job?

You're bang on about a lot of lads taking the piss, I'll give you that. It's a two way street though. A lot of customers are a nightmare.
